I find landscape photography a bit of a struggle at the best of times. Then I wonder if it can be done with a Q2 (28mm). We were resting here before our decent to the town of El Chalten, having walked from the Rio Elécrico Entrance to the Parque Nacional Los Glaciares.

Alex B - evocative landscape, the blue/green colour palette conveying the cold climate of the glaciers with the striking peak disappearing into the clouds…
ReplyDeleteAndre H - …to warmer climes, with the bold colours and framing revealing how the shape of the flower echoes a ray-fringed sun infusing the surrounding fields
Arthur H - thoughtful in subject, composition and title, the central triangle of light emphasising the highlight on his head. We are drawn into his contemplation of this mysterious scene
Brian O - the returning subject and the foreground Fortnums hamper add context to suggest the vibe of the classic cars/planes event as well as the vehicle itself
Dave C - effectve documentary image, the two central figures each looking at the different wheels focus the viewer on the contrast between the mobility of young and old
Mine
Harry H - the toning and treatment reveal well the striking aesthetic of a building which is difficult to capture as it has so much going on
Julian P - a really pleasing image nailed by excellent technique - composition (layers with the sun on the intersection of the thirds), exposure and tone are spot on
Ken G - doubly intense portrait, with the strong, well managed lighting and sharp focus on the eye framed by a shadowy figure on whom the subject is intently concentrating
Malcolm R - the uniform green foreground/background helps reveal how between the swans and their reflections the two cygnets are cocooned in their wake - indeed a family outing
Nigel T - the vivid colours if the flower and beads of water on it attract the viewers eye as they must have done for the bee, drawn to it and closing in
Phil C - captured just at the right moment to illustrated the swan fully upended and exploring whatever lurks below the surface just by the riverbank
Richard B - bold and dynamic image, the blocky building like a giant Jenga reaching into the sky. It reveals a building which is strong but by no means static, well seen and captured to bring this out.
Alex B: A great destination. I hope to see more at a later date. I suspect a longer focal length - or a bigger blow-up of your image - would have created more impact. My Leica got to the Towers of Paine National Park, and it seemed that our small group had to ourselves.
ReplyDeleteAndre H: Very nice indeed. A well honed technique.
Arthur H: I have not worked out all the elements in the picture but I feel you have captured the occasion.
Brian O: A good record of the day and a nicely timed moment. The bag on the Fortnum hamper looks precarious.
Dave C: I see the reason behind the title, but the skate-boarder is not well shown - just a wrong moment, perhaps?
David S: I understand the brief, but surely the youngest of the visitors had to be seen, rather than suggested in a carrycot.
Harry H: You get away with your sloping verticals, but in general I use all my software skills to keep verticals vertical.
Julian P: Mine
Ken G: Very clever. Contrived or luck? The fingered hand and upper body creates the shape for the portrait.
Malcolm R: Do I see two cygnets on the back of the first swan? If so, extra congratulations. I find your scene very restful, and great to have recorded.
Nigel T: I feel this just fails the sharpness test. Difficult to do. The colours are great.
Phil C: Another swan! Enlivened by some spreading ripples.
Richard B: A fine example of inspired architecture enhanced by a close but unseen vanishing point.
Alex charming shot of the French Glacier. Could do to be a bit more contrasty and tidy up the log on bottom right
ReplyDeleteAndre H I live the vibrant summery vibes of this shot
Arthur H moody portrait with the overhead vector creating a leading line to the subject. Very good composition but perhaps needs the subject to be a little more delineated from the background.
Brian O a richly colourful shot. Maybe could have been shot from an angle that removed some of the background clutter?
Dave C an excellent street shot with a strong internal narrative.
David S a romantic and highly coloured pastoral shot. I like the differential focus here. Could you have waited a couple of seconds for the models to relax more and be a little less posed?
Harry H I love this shot. Powerful composition and rich high contrast b and w. One of my top shots this month.
Julian P I know that it’s a sunset and these are very often done to death but I lovely the velvety colours in this shot ( perfect exposure!) and pleasing composition. Another of my top 3 this month.
Mine and yes it was deliberate to include the photographer and the model in the shot. I was trying to capture of more interesting story of a shoot and the interaction. Between the two characters seen as a framed narrative rather than it just being another portrait. This was at the studio at Leitzpark with a borrowed SL3 which I really enjoyed shooting with.
Malcolm R a very pure shot with great reflection.
Nigel T lovely story here as the bee approaches. Colours are shot on and love the bead of water.
Phil C a whimsical shot well captured.
Richard B I like the way you have composed the angular forms here. A very clever shot.
Alex B.
ReplyDeleteA good landscape from a non-landscape photographer.
Andre H.
Strong colours maybe square format.
Arthur H.
Strong black-and-white image maybe lose some of the top.
Brian O.
Interesting colourful record of a vintage car.

David S.
Happy smiley colourful image, maybe lose part of the left-hand side.
Harry H.
Strong monochrome with good tonal range.
Julian P.
Find Sunset image, maybe lose some of the grass .
Ken G.
Strong, creative portrait, I like the juxtaposition position of the two hands.
Malcolm R.
Beautiful nature image, shame about the reeds in the foreground.
Nigel T.
Excellently timed nature shot.
Phil C.
Sharp, unusual monochrome nature shot.
Richard B.
Strong graphic monochrome image.
1. Alex B. In “Mt Fitzroy’, you’ve shown that the Q2 (28mm) is well matched to landscape photography. The bare foreground is a perhaps the poorer relation tonally, and could be removed without detriment to the whole.
ReplyDelete2. Andre H. The saturated colour of the sunflower, and appropriate use of aperture leave no doubt as to the subject, placed large in the frame. A rich harvest is in store.
3. Arthur H. An intriguing composition. The frame is dominated by the sky, rendered as a contrasting bright shaft of light. The darker tones of the seated figure are only part of a wider scene which almost feels subterranean.
4. Brian O. A colourful image that describes very well the pride taken by the owner of this classic cars. The scene is of a summer meeting, but the photo is really about the detail of the car. Stow Maries is a new name to me; I now know it is in Essex.
5. Dave C. A candid ‘street’ photo. The demeanour of the characters is serious; I wonder what is being said. There is much detail to enjoy, although the background is too busy visually to my eye.
6. David S. This joyful scene celebrates family, time at leisure in the sun. The subject matter and framing reminds me of a painting by a French Impressionist. The perspective and contrasting colour of the mat may give the illusion that the mat floats above the ground,
7. Harry H. Well executed in monochrome using 28mm, tonally balanced and correct to my mind. The use of cropped buildings to frame the image is effective.
8. Julian P. You seized the moment, the timing perfectly ensuring a semi-circular setting sun, complemented by two distant figures giving interest and scale to the mid-ground.
9. Ken G. An effective portrait in many ways. It is intriguing, the 3 layers are complementary and the sitter’s eye, placed (near) centrally, is clever to my mind. Above all, it leaves the viewer to ask questions.
10. Malcolm R. At first glance this photo is about a family of swans. But there’s more. The background is a reflection that gives a distorted impression of the surroundings, of what sits naturally above the water line and beyond the frame.
11. Nigel T. A colourful macro composition, well timed to ensure the action of the bumblebee is caught in flight and included in the scene.
12. Phil C. The Mute Swan is reduced to a simple sail-like shape, almost sculptural in monochrome. Its quest for food has transformed it from a creature we know well to one we associate with this feeding behaviour.
13. My Photo.

ReplyDeleteI do like the dramatic mountains in the background, however, I do find the foreground a little distracting.
Andre H
A lovely summer feeling to this image the sun flower front and centre with a lovely soft background
Arthur H
The strong lines of the bridge are a stark contrast to the calm of the figure in the foreground.
Brian O
A well captured moment, it is a pity that all the figure isn’t in the frame.
Dave C
The moment is well captured with the skate board passing the group whilst the wheel chair is at rest.
David S
I think you fulfilled the “brief” very well! A nice family group well captured.
Harry H
A strong composition, however, I think opening up the shadows a little would strengthen the shot.
Julian P
A very calming sunset image enhanced by the two figures centre left.
Ken G
A most striking portrait well framed by the foreground body.
Malcolm R
An excellent moment well captured, I do like the reflection in the water and the two cygnets “going solo”.
Phil C
A most unusual viewpoint of a swan - well spotted from a distance.
Richard C
A strong geometric image enhanced by the reflections.
Alex
ReplyDeleteI think you’ve done well here with the Q£, there’s nice depth to the photo and yet you can feel the scale of the mountains. I hope the trek went well.
Andre
A lovely summer photo, good depth of field and it’s a shot that makes me smile.
Arthur
I really like this, the background works so well with the figure and the title of the picture. The shaft of light suggesting inspiration, or an escape, but the concrete bridge supports suggest resistance and blocks to any progress. Or maybe I am overthinking it, but either way a cracking shot.
Brian
I wish I’d known this was on, looks like a lovely day out and these people have come well prepared.
Dave C
Different sets of wheels on the street, the stages of life on one frame. Excellent.
David S
Looks like you met the brief well, they seem relaxed and enjoying their day out. Nice depth too.
Harry
This works well in black and white.great contrast.
Julian
It’s rare pictures of sunsets capture their beauty, but you have done so here, perfect.
Ken
A strong portrait, the two hands in the picture frame the face and draw us in, they also can be read in different ways, is it threatening or a greeting? Great lighting too.
Malcolm
A lovely scene, perfectly caught on the still water.
Nigel
You’ve done well to catch this moment, great timing and framing too.

Richard
The title shows what you were after, and you have framed it well, it looks like a Minecraft building, square blocks on square blocks.
Alex B.
ReplyDeleteNice Image, Maybe by stepping back a bit to include all of the log, might have worked a little better.
Andre H.
Nice and sharp,I love the different yellow tones, though personally I would have cropped the image into a square format.
Arthur H
I like the way the light leads to the centre figure, and yes he looks deep in thought/reflection,
nicely spotted.
Brian O.
I would have just liked to see, the whole of the chap in the shot, nice colours.
Dave C.
transport is definitely the theme here, a well captured image that tells a story.
David S.
Pleasant image of a couple enjoying the out-doors, nicely photographed.
Mine.
Julian P.
Lovely sunset image, looks like somewhere nice to visit.
Ken G.
I love the way the shadow forms a frame, great image of fellow photographer W.Goodman.
Malcolm R.
I like the reflections of the swans on the water, very well captured.
Nigel T.
The flower is sharp in the centre, with the bee showing a bit of movement coming in frame from the right-hand side.
Phil C.
Great balance of contrast, the whites are not blown-out, nice image.
Richard B.
I like the balance between the white sky and the dark bottom of the building, this leads the eye to the square block structure's of the building.
Alex B: Mine
ReplyDeleteAndre H: A glorious Sunflower in three colours - Yellow, Blue and Green. Excellent.
Arthur H: Excellent monochrome. The focal point is, of course, the person and all lines lead in to him. Well exposed.
Brian O: A nice mage of the car, although I find the background a little distracting.
Dave C: A good monochrome street scene - a group of people interacting. I wonder if the boy on the skateboard is part of the group.
David S: A lovely portrait of a young family enjoying the good weather. The foreground on the left is a bit distracting, but it may be hiding something more distracting.
Harry H: An excellent monochrome, and I like the fact that there is detail in the sky. The highlights have been handled well.
Julian P: A lovely sunset. I particularly like the golden light on the foreground herbage and reflected in the pool of water. I think a tighter crop might have helped - I don’t think the people on the left need to be there.
Ken G: A nice candid portrait. Well framed. It would be tempting to crop in tighter, but I think that would be a mistake - the dark negative space adds something - foreboding perhaps. Is the subject being barred from Wetzlar for not caring a Leica?
Malcolm R: A very nice midlife image.
Nigel T: An excellent shot. Nice detail.
Phil C: Bottoms up!! A good monochrome, and humorous.
Richard B: An excellent image. I like the geometry of the architecture.
