This was taken from the cafe Nōen, on the corner of Shijo-dori and Hanamikoji-dori, just down from the Yasaka Shrine in the Gion district of Kyoto. The windows were partially frosted, so I tried an experiment and took some photo's of passers-by through the frosted section (trying to release my inner Leiter) by capturing them in an Abstract or Impressionist manner."

I took this image in a Bar in Vienna in May25, I think I had a few of those cocktails that night, hence the softness, but it brings back nice memories.

ReplyDeleteDefinitely Saul-esque, perhaps a little bit more saturation on the reds, just my preference.
Andre.H
Nice image, but maybe crop out the gap on the left, which i find a little distracting.
Arthur.H
I wonder who's playing and whats the score? well captured.
Brian.O
I like the bright red on the plane which seems to add a layered effect with the grass and the sky.
Dave.C
Sharp detail, works well in monochrome.
David.R
Very nice silhouette, at first your eye leads you away to the light globe at on the top of the image, this would normally be distracting but in a strange way it is counter balanced by the light at the end of the tunnel, and works.
David.S
Nice symmetry, very well captured.
Mine.
Julian.P
Nice image, the verticals are handled very well.
Ken.G
Nice morning sunrise scene, just my preference, would be to crop a little off the bottom.
Malcolm.R
I like the different angles formed by the converging bridge and supports, which forms an X shape.
Nigel.T
Great composition with nice tones.
Phil.C
I love the inclined view, which adds drama to the scene, which would be lost if the image was straighten to match the hortizon.
Richard.B
The colours of the curtin in the van are very well handled, very nicely captured.
Tom.L
Nice image of former mine, highlights and tones handled very well.
Andre H.
ReplyDeleteA pleasing record of the shop .
Arthur H.
A different viewpoint of the game.
Brian O.
A very colourful record of the aircraft.

Well crafted monochrome image, but not keen on the strong highlight in the lamp.
David S.
Well timed colourful graphic image.
Harry H.
Strong candid Leica monochrome.
Julian P.
Well created colourful pictorial image using a square format.
Ken G.
Classic silhouette, maybe crop part of the sky? And saturated to enhance the colours.
Malcolm R.
Shame about the flat lighting, maybe consider a monochrome conversion?
Nigel T.
A very good monochrome record.
Phil C.
Excellent motorsport image, considering shot on Leica M.
Richard B.
Would work well in a sequence about the van.
Tom L.
Well captured moody monochrome.
1. Alex B. An interesting experiment. The image is in two parts, separately comprising warm and cool tones. Together, they create the impression. I think I might have liked a little more definition, slightly more contrast in the cycle and figures.
ReplyDelete2. Andre H. Seemingly, a survivor from another age. If not, this Italian shop front has been very successfully recreated. Who could resist being drawn over the threshold while touring Tuscany?!
3. Arthur H. The story is clear, foreground interest and a vista, the aperture carefully selected. Movement has softened the foreground spectator; perhaps it does not matter.
4. Brian O. Two impressions of this light aeroplane in one frame; one in vivid colour, the other a well defined shadow cast below. Tightly cropped, the image would benefit from separation between the plane and the edges of the frame.
5. Dave C. Monochrome suits this industrial scene very well. The engine and worker are well exposed in what I imagine to be challenging conditions. Use of high ISO, as here, is not to be dismissed in the better digital cameras.
6. David R. Perfect silhouettes, walking distantly, caught below a circle of light in the moment. I find I’m searching for more detail in the shadows; perhaps a little dark for my liking.
7. David S. Juxtaposition is everything in this carefully timed, carefully composed image. An historic church and jet fighters in peace time, now a celebration. Full of symbolism this picture can tell different stories.
8. Harry H. A busy composition that reinforces the setting, the nature of the business. Somehow, the soft rendering also adds to the whole.
9. Julian P. A great choice of lens, given the verticality of the massive stone tower. Perspective has been controlled either in camera or post-processing, or both.
10. Ken G. The title adds to this (contre-jour) urban scene. The high rise towers in silhouette are semi-abstract; if title and scale are absent, they could arguably be the remnant piers of an old timber jetty.
11. Malcolm R. A bridge, willows, a river and a colourful boat. The potential for symmetry in the bridge structure has not gone unnoticed, the photographer cleverly using it to successfully bind together the various elements into this successful image.
12. Nigel T. My eye is drawn first to the edges of the frame, as always with extreme symmetry. Has the quest for precision faltered? It has not. All credit to the photographer who has captured an extreme view in difficult conditions. I can only assume a tripod was used.
13. Phil C. The race is on, the speed, the competiton, the colour self-evident. Very well observed and captured - panning and timing being key. Images involving speed remain relatively scarce in Circle D.
14. My photo.
15. Tom L. A very attractive impression carrying a sense of desolation from a former industrial age. The cloud formation perfectly complements the scene, also adding interest in its own right.
Alex B: My humble attempt.
ReplyDeleteAndre H: Nice one. The muted colour palate of the building makes the red flowers pop. The hats and umbrellas add a little more colour.
Arthur H: Nicely done.
Brian O: Red plane and green grass - excellent colour contrast. I like the detail in the sky as well. Maybe a bit to tightly cropped, but maybe there were distracting elements that needed cropping out.
Dave C: An excellent environmental portrait - an engineer and his engine. Both nicely in focus, the background just a little soft so as not to be distracting. Well done.
David R: An excellent image, although I find the bright light at the top of the image a bit distracting. It does tend to pull the eye up. Perhaps if the doorway was a bit brighter, keeping the figures in silhouette.
David S: Well done, an excellent shot.
Harry H: A well composed shot. Nicely handled depth-of field- the Barman is the focus, the background has sufficient softness not to distract but still retain some detail of the place.
Julian P: A nice composition and good colours. I’m a sucker for fluffy clouds.
Ken G: Possibly a bit too much foreground, but otherwise a nice sunrise shot.
Malcolm R: An interesting symmetry.
Nigel T: Lovely detail and well composed.
Phil C: Excellent work. Well panned. Very dynamic.
Richard B: An interesting “urb-ex” style image of a van that has obviously seen better days. The curtain is the only colourful object in the image and makes the image stand out.
Tom L: Excellent monochrome image - I love the sky detail.
ALEX B: two kimonos and a bicycle
ReplyDeleteClever, but I really did not understand the pic until I read the text– still, experiments are good fun.
ARTHUR H A day at the Oval
Nicely done and good use of diff focus
BRIAN O There is nothing like a Dame
Very funny! Carefully chosen and bright and cheerful.
DAVE C Looking after the engine

RICHARD B Inside the Van
This is a well found location and the picture suggests a bleak environment
Tom L Magpie Mine, Yorkshire
Good stuff and a fine sky
ReplyDelete1. Alex B. Worthy of an experiment but maybe just too impressionistic. The bicycle wheel, the white and blue figures and the red blind (?) hold the promise of an interesting busy street scene but the frosted window has overdone the diffusion of the detail.
2. Andre H. An unusual and colourful little shop with an attractive window display, the inclusion of the almost monochrome buildings around the corner gives more sense of place.
3. Arthur H. A little more depth of field please so that we can see the action(?) on the pitch and sharper detail in the chap’s cap.
4. Brian O. The Dame looks very smart, RGB colours predominate and background intrusions are at a minimum.
5. Dave C. A tricky exposure to hold the outside detail through the window and detail in the complex machinery inside simultaneously. The quizzical expression on the operator’s face is classic and the potted plant an unexpected addition to the pump house decor.
6. David R. A strong graphic image with slightly sinister overtones but the ladies are emerging into the light so they should be OK. Is the lamp an essential or a distraction ?
7. David S. A well recorded moment - and you only get one shot at it !
8. Harry H. There is a lot of concentration going on there, I wonder if the face and hands of the barman could be lightened just a touch?
9. Julian P. White clouds, blue sky and a pink tower make a striking picture. A google search indicates that this is now a holiday cottage.
10. Ken G. The low sun throws the skyscrapers into silhouette and lights up the choppy waters, a different view of NYC.
11. Me.
12. Nigel T. A first rate record of an extraordinary structure.
13. Phil C. An exciting moment with the cars wheel to wheel, the panning has worked well making the cars in the background appear to be moving in the opposite direction.
14. Richard B. The dislodged curtain hangs like an old flag (in red, white and blue). We know nothing about the van so have to use our imagination, maybe it is a caravan, the fly screen suggests a warmer clime - America perhaps? Accumulated debris indicates disuse, decay and abandonment, signs of an unknown some-one’s previous existence, all rather sad.
15. Tom L. A well known piece of industrial heritage photographed from an angle that hides the pit head winding gear which would have been very dramatic against that fearsome sky.
Alex
ReplyDeleteI rather like this, and experimentation is always to be applauded. I think that you were inspired baby Leiter also adds to the meaning of the picture.
Andre
Lots of hats to choose, though many seem the same, but I like the way you have framed it and certainly makes me want to visit the area.
Arthur
The Summilux is working well here, you can feel the occasion and the tones of the shirt match in nicely.
Brian
A lovely play on words with the title, it does look like a nice little plane.
Dave C
A excellent picture of the engineer and his passion. His expression suggest he is being tested by the machinery, but he will win out in the end.
David R
Such a simple frame, and yet it draws us in. Who are they, where are they going? Top work.
David S
Caught at the perfect moment. Well done for finding a good location to capture the Arrows in flight over a building of significance. Great stuff.
Harry
A beautiful environmental portrait, catching the man concentrating on the task in hand. I hope the cocktails were good, looks like the sort of place for a very good evening.
Julian
An excellent architectural shot, the 15mm lens must have needed lots of correction to get the verticals in place, great light too.
Ken
A view seen by many and one that always evokes a response, great light and the texture of the sea, choppy waters, feels apt.
Malcolm
I like the central framing, the cold architecture battling with the natural willow, in time the latter will win, but for now it’s a score draw.
Nigel
So much detail, nicely framed and the black and white works really well, transforming it into something abstract.

Richard
This is lovely, with so much texture it feels like the curtain is in front of me. I want to see more of the van, know its history…
Tom
We are spoiled for strong architectural pictures this month, and this is no exception. Nicely framed against a turbulent sky.
Alex B - simultaneously nuanced and bold, the title adding dimensions I would otherwise have missed (the kimonos) - together making it thought-provoking in the manner of modern art
ReplyDeleteAndre H -the colours and straightforward composition work well in evoking a bygone age from which this shop is a survivor. The past indeed a foreign country
Arthur H - a picture made by the England cap, turning an otherwise unremarkable sight into an effective impression of what watching international cricket may be like
Brian O - gives the plane the clean framing and colours it deserves - nice machine, nice picture
Dave C - excellent environmental portrait - mono tones etc all spot on, but really for me it’s all about the man quizzically looking into camera… the machine is his context
David R - Aesthetics, atmosphere, composition, implied story, tones…and the lamp a bold and intriguing bonus. Lovely.
My picture
Harry H - the softness enhances it for me, conveying the vibe of the bar - and perhaps the night that you enjoyed it. Very cool.
Julian P - you’ve done remarkably well with the perspective to capture a sense of this (literal) landmark in a way that would be beyond me. And all the other elements in the image right…
Ken G - choice of portrait vs landscapes elevates what may be a well photographed scene to something beyond the ordinary. The city in its watery context, the sky criss crossed by cloud trails. NYC in its elements
Malcolm R - strong symmetrical structure, modern and brutal suggests the urban encroaching on the peaceful canal and its surrounding trees - interesting and effective landscape
Nigel T - excellent execution conjures a very pleasing symmetrical design. Exposure and tones critical to cover the nuance in the roof, the detail and the bright window which provides a central hub. All spot on.
Phil C - angle, pan, just enough hint of motion blur, all really take us to the heart of the race. Most of all perfect timing, easy enough blasting 30 fps on an autofocus Sony, but with an M….
Richard B - very engaging, absorbing image - inherently pleasing colours, shape, textures but with added depths of mystery and melancholy. Fascinatingly evocative…of what?
Tom L - strong, portentous image, as well as the imposing skies the copse of skeletal trees add to the desolation of this industrial relic - and the upward slope drawing us to it. Brooding and powerful.
Alex B: Sorry. I must have missed the point even after reading the caption and explanation.
ReplyDeleteAndre H: This had to be by you Andre. You have a distinctive style and subject matter. Very good.
Arthur H: Well positioned. The Oval in the title says it all. The picture gives no hint of what is unseen, but when you know, the picture makes more sense.
Brian O: Sharp and colourful. A good record.
Dave C: Nicely composed with the 43. Looks very realistic.
David R: A decisive moment. Exposure range magnificent.
David B: Another decisive moment. This one looks like it must have been the optimum if you were shooting a fast sequence.
Harry H: I am sure it brings back happy memories. I suspect only you believe your image is soft unintentionally.
Julian P: Mine
Ken G: Thank you for not being lethargic and so capturing this early morning atmosphere. I like everything about the image.
Malcolm R: Straight-forward and understated. Fine for that.
Nigel T: You can’t go wrong with the tower roof of Ely Cathedral. I recognised it right away. Competent.
Phil C: The title tells us much more about the image which otherwise seems pedestrian.
Richard B: This appeals to me, but I am unsure why, as there is not much to grab the eye.
Tom L: The detail and clarity are compelling. And this is a subject I would go for. Great.
Alex B
ReplyDeleteFor me this nearly works - I just feel the image is a little too diffuse.
Andre H
This image brought back memories of wandering the streets in Seville, wonderful shops on the Iberian peninsular!
Arthur H
The slight hunched shoulders reflect for many the slowness of the game - which is its beauty!
Brian O
Well captured moment, a most captivating registration for a beautiful aeroplane!
Dave C
The look on the person’s face speaks volumes of the many frustrations of maintaining the engine.
Dave R
A most striking image, my favourite this month.
David S
A well captured moment, the caption gives the context essential to the image.
Harry H
The lighting gives atmosphere to the shot - softness is appropriate when cocktails are consumed!
Julian P
