"Table Lamp" Leica Q2, 1/50s, f/5.6, ISO 500.

This is the Last Supper found in the St Jakob Church in Rotenburg Ob Der Tauber. The whole town is recognisable from many Hollywood movies, and still has large numbers of tourists. This woodcarving was created by the workshop of Tilman Riemaenschder in Wurzburg between 1495 and 1505. I first saw it when in the early stages of stripping from a dark brown colour. (Somewhere I I have a Kodachrome of it). Judas is the central figure in the front. Stripping the muck off has left it possible to see it clearly I do not often carry a large tripod, but even with M6 and a 35mm lens, it was worth it.

Brian O
"Making Smoke"
I was at the Stow Maries WW1 Aerodrome last Sunday for their ‘Wings and Wheels” show. There were hundreds of cars there and it was a toss up what to enter. It was too windy for the WW1 biplanes to fly, but we did have a demo from a couple of modern display teams. Despite the better quality car shots I have gone for a flying one in appreciation. M10 using a triElmar at 50mm when they got low enough!

David R: I like this. I did not realise these trains moved so fast in the station. Well done.

    Dave S: Very moving.

Dennis A: I don’t know how to do this. It is very effective. A very good subject to use this technique on.

Elaine J: Thank you for this. I now know what to look forward to when I explore the coastal region of Perthshire.

Harry H: I cannot conceive just what was involved in converting the original exposure to the final image. It has been very well packaged.

Ken G: A very happy picture.

Malcolm R: I like the simplicity and the topic is close to my heart.

    Phil C: I don’t understand.

Richard B: A great selection and very well presented.

  2. ALEX B: TABLE LAMP. Clever use of an interesting object which is not easy to understand. . .until the inside of the shade gives the answer! Nicely lit

ANDRE H :CARVED WOOD ALTAR. I am very taken by wood like this .

BRIAN O: MAKING SMOKE. Super! Nicely composed and very pleasing to look at.

DAVE C: MAN WITH LONG BEARD. Good stuff! I have never let my beard get so long, but this is nicely in character, with an old carriage as background. The preserved steam railwats give good value to photographers. Good portrait and well composed.

DAVID R: THE TRAIN RUSH. Excellent use of aperture and lens speed to emphasise movement; good colour and composition.

DAVE S: THREE GENERATIONS. Good image that goes a bit beyond a family snap. One to treasure.

DENNIS A: VOLCANOES. Nicely re-made: great use of shapes and outlines.

ELAINE J; ST MORANTS. Good lighting; very nice sense of recession and intriguing background.

HARRY H :I’M NOT SO PROUD. Caught the dog in fancy dress – nicely done, with a sense of tolerance in the face of the dog.

KEN G : Studio shot with a difference; and alcohol to relax the model !

MALCOLM R : NEW DAY. Splendid lighting, and excellent use of sun in background to illuminate the tree. Lovely image.

PHIL C: THE CLAW. Great use of closeup, excellent lighting , focus on the claw and attached body. Good stuff.

RICARD B: GRAIN SILOS. Good use of two textures and surface pattern.

    An interesting viewpoint well captured.

    Andre H.
A colourful record of the freeze.

    Brian O.
Well composed ground to air shot.

    Dave C.
    Mine.

    David R.
    An excellent creative underground shot.

    Dave S.
    Pleasing family portrait.

    Dennis A
    A nice layered landscape.

    Elaine J.
Good forground interest but a tiny bit oversaturated.

    Harry H.
Interesting subject, but I would prefer a darker Vignette.

    Ken G.
A well seen and framed candid portrait.

    Malcolm R.
    Sunrise well captured.

    Phil C.
Interesting close-up that leaves a lot of unanswered questions.

    Richard B.
    A very strong monochrome image.

  4. Alex B - interesting close-up which turns an everyday object into something almost organic and highlights the creativity of its maker

Andre H - a really impressive artefact well captured to bring out the artistry and craft together with the vibrance of wood that has told its story over half a millennium

Brian O - good framing of the quartet of planes between the cloud and vapour trail gives us a sense of the speed as well as the precision of the flying

Dave C - eye contact from the subject reveals something of the character behind the beard, background and costume - in all a modern man projecting back from the past

David R - creativity and technique combined to make a dynamic and powerful image, you can almost hear the noise of the train rushing into the platform

    Mine

Dennis A - lovely almost abstract landscape that could have been a painting rather than a photograph - it gives the volcanoes an almost mystical quality

Elaine J - vibrant tones and strong composition balancing the foreground rockpool and background buildings, it very effectively conveys the vibe of this coastline

Harry H - super dog who is patiently enjoying his/her costume in this jolly picture which suggests the wider sense of celebration in West Wittering

Ken G - great timing as he leans back laughing into the light framed by the silhouetted people and equipment, the subject relaxed and expressive in an environment that might phase others

Malcolm R - excellent lighting and composition, the brown, yellow and blue background layers almost suggest the tree emerging from the soil through the power of sunlight

Phil C - fascinating picture, not sure my imagination is up to figuring it out, but it’s great fun trying. Really interesting take that makes an intriguing and memorable picture

Richard B - bold composition, strong almost tactile textures across a full range of tones create a powerful and austere image that make us wonder what building or machine is depicted

    Alex B.
Very well captured, love the textures.

    Andre H.
Nicely captured carved image, just a tad of levelling needed in post.

    Brian O.
The smoke trial gives a leading line from the left to the centre of the shot, well spotted.

    Dave C.
The Gentleman’s dress and attire is in keeping with the old train carriage a sharply taken re-enactment shot.

    Dave R.
Nice use of post processing to great effect.

    Dave S
    . Touching family Photograph.

    Dennis A.
Stunning landscape, I like the foggy/misty layered effect. What camera and lens did you use?

    Elaine J.
    Nice foreground and colourful image.

    Mine.

    Ken G.
The guy looks very relaxed, nice candid shot.

    Malcolm R.
    Lovely Sunrise shot.

    Phil C.
Very intriguing image, nice sharp detail on the reptiles claw.

    Richard B.
I like the detail, great texture works well in monochrome.

  6. Alex B: Mine

Andre H: An interesting record image.

Brian O: Nice one. I like the smoke trail coming in from the lower left corner, leading into the flying formation. The clouds to the right help break up the blue of the sky: I think it may have overwhelmed the planes otherwise.

Dave C: An excellent portrait. The background adds to the story.

    David R: Excellent. Very dynamic.

Dave S: A wonderful family shot.

Dennis A: An excellent image. Very minimal.

Elaine J: A nice beach shot. A bit over saturated perhaps.

Harry H: I feel sorry for the poor dog, but it’s a good photograph. You got down to the dog’s level, and the only humans (owners?) are legs. However, I find the vignette a bit strong and distracting.

Ken G: Not sure of what is happening here - an advertising shoot perhaps. A good candid shot of the central figure (the subject), nicely framed by the equipment which helps the story and I like the scene being repeated in the monitor to the right.

Malcolm R: A lovely atmospheric sunrise.

    Phil C: An interesting close-up.

Richard B: A good monochrome. I love the textures.

Beautiful still life that draws you in.

    Andre H
    Well rendered detail.

    Brian O
I like the asymmetrical composition. The smoke trail is a well observed point of interest.

    Dave C
Sharp portrait and there is probably a tale to be told.

    Dave R
I really like the dynamic way the eye is led into the shot and skillful zooming to combine sharp focus and blur.

    Dave S
A very tender shot. For me I would crop in even tighter.

    Dennis A
My favourite shot this month. I love the simplicity and dreamy abstract quality of this image.

    Elaine J
    Delicious colours.

    Harry H
    What a model!

    KG
Mine. It was a behind the scenes shot on a commercial film shoot. It helps when you have a talented chap like him.

    Malcolm R
    Dreamy.

    Phil C
Great texture and my runner up this month,

    Richard B
Superb tonal range and lovely patina. My third place.

  9. 1. Alex B. The embossed decorative motif, suggestive of flowers, is carefully presented here. The contrasting bright band (top) draws the eye away, unfortunately.

    2. Andre H. A well balanced exposure that promotes the dedication and skill of medieval craftsmen.

    3. Brian O. The diagonal smoke trail adds a sense of drama to this aerial image. The aspect ratio is well chosen.

    4. Dave C. A perfect portrait of a seemingly proud gentlemen. What more can I say?

    5. David R. An intriguing perspective, a study in motion. Devoid of passengers, it brings a new understanding to the Tube.

    6. Dave S. Congratulations! A tender moment, captured for posterity. Such pictures endure, cherished in perpetuity more than any other subjects.

    7. Dennis A. Minimalism in all its art forms always strikes a positive chord with me. But what secrets lay within? Interested in when photography becomes digital art, I would like to know more about how the final image was constructed.

    8. Elaine J. There is much to draw the eye in this Scottish beach scene. The colours are a little too vivid for my liking.

    9. Harry H. A rare subject which had to be recorded. It is very busy visually; certainly it sets the scene. The white vignette is unusual; would a light crop have been effective?

    10. Ken G. This studio scene surely tells a story. But the viewer is not invited in and remains outside, behind the floor-mounted camera, a voyeur who wonders.

    11. Malcolm R. The structure of the tree, a near silhouette, is laid bare by careful use, careful positioning of the rising sun. The low mist adds mystery, an ethereal feel.

    12. Phil C. A study in reptilian scales and human facial hair. I have to question the context of this bizarre encounter - a zoo, animal rescue, a pet at home? Unique.

    13. My photo.

  10. 1. Alex B. Neat use of the lamp to light itself. The surface looks like some strange coral.

    2. Andre H. Very intricate workmanship, it would need a huge image to show all the detail clearly. The slight tilt is off putting.

    3. Brian O. Nicely captured with the four planes against the blue sky but with the white clouds to hold the right hand corners.

    4. Dave C. He must be a 1st class passenger, he is much too posh to be the stationmaster. Nice twinkle in his eyes.

    5. David R. A novel and curious image but very effective .

    6. Dave S. A fine image for the family album.

    7. Dennis A. Nicely understated landscape, curious that the mountain tops go from light to dark and back to light as they recede into the distance.

    8. Elaine J. Really vibrant colours here washed clean by the outgoing tide.

    9. Harry H. Don’t suppose he had any say in the matter but he does look resigned to his fate. Not sure that the white vignette does anything for the image other than obliterating some of the top left corner distraction.

    10. Ken G. A relaxed moment during the studio session with the model well placed between the monitor and the lights. If this is an advertising shot, shouldn’t the bottle be unstoppered and slightly less than full?

    11. Me.

    12. Phil C. A real puzzle with ominous overtones, is this someone’s pet dragon?

    13. Richard B. A range of shapes, shades and textures abstracted from a larger whole makes a great monochrome image.
