“Reaching For The Sky” - taken with the SL2 and 24-90mm Vario-Elmarit. Anyone walking through the forest in early February would have thought me mad lying on the floor in order to get this composition.

  1. 1. Andre. This photo is well observed. The composition, the interaction, the colour harmony are all good. As an onlooker, I am not fully engaged, my eye wandering, searching for a sharper point of focus, although it has a softness that gives it the look of a painting.

    2. Chris S. A vessel in trouble is always a tragic sight, as here on the rocky shore. A good documentary record shot. I wonder if a stormy sea might have added character and interest.

    3. Dave S. Photos of dogs are seldom easy. This shot, a dog at ease, at rest, devoid of context, is technically well executed. The handling of the light is special, and the monochrome treatment appropriate.

    4. Elaine J. An unusual landscape steeped in rocky detail. Complementary colours - warm browns, purple & blue - should enhance the image. The intensity of the blue sky adds drama, but appears unnatural, over-saturated.

    5. Geoff C. A challenging low light shot of the street at night. The reflected light on the paving (foreground) holds my eye, but I search beyond for a prominent subject. What has caught the photographer’s eye?

    6. Julian P. For me, the essence of this photo - the delight - is the light falling on the shoreline and the shallow water. It is well seen and recorded. Compositionally, I would enjoy it more if it was cropped in a panoramic ratio to omit the sky, directing the eye to the foreground/mid-ground interest.

    7. Ken G. Umbrellas in the rain. The striking colour - mauve - adds mood, a sense of bright lights in an urban quarter, perhaps spilling from a night club, theatre or sometimes ubiquitous, gaudy, digital advertising.

    8. Malcolm R. Old news recycled, reimagined as wall paper, juxtaposed with a mural of a large cup of coffee. Each has seen better times, appearing tired, neglected. But where is this place? Perhaps the coffee offers a clue.

    9. Nigel T. The fruits of nature in autumn, perfectly captured and rendered. A lovely scene, well lit and sharp in every detail. It is rich - beautiful.

    10. Phil C. A novel and (presumably) traditional way of transporting milk over inclines and rough paving. Is it a recreation, a demonstration? For me, inclusion of the figures (top left) is a distraction from the main character in the scene.

    11. My photo.

    12. Tom L. A creative composition that succeeds compositionally using the that special light to best effect. The photographer has proven the worth of applying extra effort, laying on his back, holding an SL2 aloft on a woodland floor!

  2. 1 Andre H: engaging composition contrasting the direction most people are looking vs the central couple, mirrored by the pair behind them. An interesting picture of the subjects’ perspectives.

2 Chris S - dynamic picture, the shapes, colours and perspective pull the viewer over the cliff edge while the object (wreck? building?) is intriguing

    3. My picture

    4. Elaine J - bold framing (low angle/uphill) and vivid colours really bring out the drama of this landscape, combining both the big picture and it’s geological components really well

    5. Geoff C - atmospheric night scene, the empty street in the foreground draws the eye, exposure good and pleasing colour palette, especially the predominantly blue signs are a pleasing touch

6 Julian P - beautiful picture, simultaneously tranquil, aesthetically pleasing and strong composition framing the pre-sunset

    7. Ken G - Strong, atmospheric image combining funkiness and a hint of menace in a punchy picture. I’ve never been to Times Square but this really conveys a vibe

    8. Malcom R - strong image, the angled juxtaposition of coffee and papers makes the whole more than the sum of its parts, united by common colours on both sides

    9. Nigel T - classic image in composition and tones, really conveys a sort of ‘nature’s bounty’ sense. Could be be a fine art painting, really well executed

10 Phil C - Visiting Clovelly, I wondered how the village works in practice so found this ‘behind the scenes’ view a really interesting documentary image, unlike the usual picture postcard view

11 Richard B - evocative image, the differential exposure between foreground and background reinforcing the subject’s mood which this portrait so effectively conveys

12 Tom L - lovely, really something (as opposed to something and nothing which my attempts at similar over the years have been). Simultaneously strong and subtle

  3. Andre H intriguing group shot. I like it’s density of character
Chris S lovely muted colours and intriguing composition
Dave S my winning shot from this month. Superbly sharp. Love the side lighting to highlight the dogs coat and intriguing expression
Elaine J a very pleasing shot that really pops
Geoff C clever and enigmatic night shot with very good use of exposure
Julian P relaxing landscape with strong clouds but could you have shot from lower for more impact?
Malcolm R well observed and amusing urban shot
Nigel T very well exposed and rich colours but maybe lacks a centre of interest?
Phil C excellent composition and really is about a decisive moment. My runner up this month
Richard B powerful portrait and I love the tight cropping
Tom L technically a very nice shot and bravo for lying down , I just feel we’ve all taken a similar shot at one point or another and it would have been good to have had a fresh take

A well captured moment – perhaps a tighter crop to focus on the 2 ladies would strengthen the composition.

    Chris S
An interesting composition, I do like the strong lines of the cliffs leading the eye to the wreak.

    Dave C
I do like the balance between light and dark - the negative space adds to the composition.

    Elaine J
The strong colours as suggested by the title make a most dramatic image.

    Geoff C
Another most atmospheric night-time shot, the lighting on the wet cobbles adds interest to the foreground.

    Julian P
A tranquil scene – well captured with interesting lighting and reflections.

    Ken G
A most dramatic shot – the strong colours add impact to the image, I like it very much.

    Malcolm R
I do like the strong painted image of the coffee cup and spoon with the old newspapers on the window leading your eye to the cup.

    Phil C
Who would be a milkman! A well captured moment although the people top left are distracting.

    Richard B
The image is well captured but as a street portrait I would have expected a little context as to the environment.

    Tom L
A most unusual angle which was well worth your efforts! The lighting and clouds certainly add impact to the already interesting viewpoint.

  5. Cathedral choir - mine

Chris S - Please turn soon - excellent find, and nicely puzzling.

Dave S - Woolfson - more menace than frienship; nicely tweaked.

Elaine J - Painted desert - stark sunlight emphasises the harshness of the landscape

Geoff C - Sablon - a familiar location, very nicely composed and exposed

Julian P - Beauly Firth — A fine landscape with excellent exposure and super lighting

Ken G - Times Square - dramatic lighting with a fine selection of shapes

Malcom R - Old News - ad and window make a fascinating composition

Nigel T - autumn bounty - You are making me ache to get my QP working - great colours and composition

Phil C - Milkman - A candid people shot in all sorts of ways. This is a fine image.

Richard B - Street portrait - Good stuff and so very much better than the portraits of ragged Victorians that seem to crown the walls of so many societies.

Tom L - Reach for the Sky - great choice of composition, nicely executed.

Lots of interesting things in this image. Enjoyed looking at it.

    Chris S.
Confused about the title? Maybe a tighter crop?

    Dave S.
Good exercise in contrast, with nice eye contact.

    Elaine J.
Excellent detail and colours throughout the image.

    Geoff C.
Good lead in with the wet cobbles, but I keep looking at the brightest part of the image which is the lamp on the side of the building.

    Julian P.
Pleasing scene, good detail in the foreground, great layered landscape.

    Ken G.
I think it’s a tiny bit soft overall, great contrast between the colours.

    Malcolm R.
    Interesting composition, Strong coffee cup.

    Nigel T.
Nice natural history shot, with great autumn colours.

    Phil C.
Excellent B&W good range of tones, good use of the dynamic.

    Richard B.
Full marks for doing a street portrait, engaging eye contact.

    Tom L.
It’s always good to look up in the woods.

  7. Andre H: I know the feeling well being a member of Dingwall Choral. I am struck by the muted dress code - blue shirts and suits for the men and black for the ladies. At least they are not dressed in surplices and gowns. A god moment. Well done Andre.

Chris S: A mystery picture. Did it fall, or was pushed, or did it migrate along the beach! Some more explanation could be useful. Some pictures require explanations.

Dave S: This satisfies me on so many fronts. Great. The black intensity makes it.

Elaine J: It can’t be true one would say - even knowing this is the painted desert. Quite remarkable colours. For fear of outrageous remarks I would have reduced the vibrancy and saturation to make it more acceptable (even if then it was less realistic to you).

Geoff C: I like the atmosphere. I see this as a predominately brown picture. Maybe that is my eyesight, but do you think the “colour temperature” or the predominant shade is what you remember. As always one is reminded of the effectiveness of an old Leica. Thank you for the image.

    Julian P: Mine

Ken G: So curious with all the pink light. You have monopolised the moment. I guess this was all fast moving and you had a physically big lens to deal with. Certainly worth a lot of experimentation.

Malcolm R: Playing tricks again. Great. It produces a smile. You must enjoy playing with images. Give us more.

Nigel T: My kind of photography. I blinked to see if I had taken it!! A very good example of fungi varieties close together. It is worth a good scrutiny - and the colours are great. Best without direct sun.

Phil C: Very sensible and a good working image. Ijust wonder if this is still the way it is done? Not an archive image perhaps?

Richard B: Of its genre this is as good as it needs be. I admire photographers who attempt this. I would not have the audacity unless the subject was known to me.

Tom L: This is one of my favourite activities too. But in colour. Lying flat out is the right way too.

  8. Andre H - I really like this image, the one lady looking almost towards the camera effectively draws the viewer’s eye to her. Great timing to capture the moment.

Chris S - very nice. I particularly like the composition and the way the V formation of the rocks draw the eye to the main subject.

Dave S - the side lighting on this image is superb with just the right amount of detail being maintained. That 90-280mm SL Vario is certainly a great lens.

Elaine J - lovely colours and composition making a very nice image.

Geoff C - very nice night shot with what appears to be wet cobblestones reflecting the available light to superb effect.

Julian P - really nice landscape with the sky and sun’s rays being used to good effect. The M240 and 35-70 Vario Elmar is a great combination and I’ve used the same for my May’s entry.

Ken G - sharp and nice composition but personally I’m not to fond of the colour cast.

Malcolm R - interesting image, good composition and well executed.

Nigel T - lovely detail and colour, certainly capturing nature’s autumn bounty.

Phil C - great in Monochrome and I like the way the milkman has to lean to fight the downwards momentum of the milk float. Nice composition and perfect exposure.

Richard B - very nice; I particularly like detail in the character, especially the eyes and the way he stands out against the dark background.

  9. 1. Andre H. The expression on the face of the predominant girl suggests that a juicy bit of scandal is being divulged. The rest of the picture sets the scene in a muted mix of browns, greys and the odd spot of blue.

    2. Chris S. An hour or so of drama and the wreckage bears witness to it for years to come.

    3. Dave S. The imaginative treatment has resulted in a very graphic, near abstract and really enjoyable rendering of Woolfson.

    4. Elaine J. Vivid colours give this image a jewel like quality.

    5. Geoff C. The wet cobbles in the foreground vie for attention with the activity in the distant shopping area, the cobbles win but perhaps a little more could have been made of them?

    6. Julian P. Wonderfully subtle tones in the sky and especially the water, the sunbeams and their reflection are beautifully rendered.

    7. Ken G. The three black umbrellas show promise of a good picture but this is not the most favourable arrangement of them. The unnatural pink highlights and lack of shadow detail is perhaps intentional but I find it overwhelming.

    8. Me.

    9. Nigel T. The mushrooms have arranged themselves beautifully and the leaves have fallen in just the right position to make a great autumnal image.

    10. Phil C. Milk delivery in Clovelly is one of those rare jobs where you start at the top and work your way down!

    11. Richard B. A head on portrait stark against the dark backdrop, what does it tell us about the man?

    12. Tom L. Trees photograph best in the winter when they are without their leaves, the break in the clouds is in the optimum position. Sometimes lying down on the job pays dividends.
