  1. Andre H: Could this be the real 'Stephenson's Rocket'. A record shot, properly exposed, good and sharp.

    Chris S: Me

Dave C: Another well exposed and sharp photograph but given the speed of the motorcycle I feel that a panned shot with a slower shutter speed would have made it more dynamic.

Elaine J: I like this very much, an excellent landscape. Good composition, dark foreground, receding mountains with a hint of moodiness, rising horizon at the edges. Maybe, just maybe, standing more to the right and rotating to the left would have included the river bend thereby allowing the eye to 'flow' through the scene.

Geoff C: This type of scene is always interesting but I think it would have been better if taken earlier with more light in the sky, to fill the shadows.

Ken G: This makes me smile - it's the sort of subject I would try to photograph. Good composition and the mind boggles with possibilities for the title.

Malcolm R: Early morning, long shadows, into the light with the gap in the trees to add interest - interesting but just a little overexposed.

Nigel T: A good photograph, nicely structured and exposed, taken at a time of day to get the added impact of long shadows.

Phil C: What 'shell" I say. An idea 'hatched' from an 'egg'stremely colourful array in a nest of brambles (sorry, couldn't resist it) - all against a counterpoint of industrial cladding, well seen. Maybe put the eggs mid way in the image by cropping the top of the building.

Richard B: Excellent street type photograph very well seen and captured but my eyes are constantly drawn to the orange bag - again, cropping the bag away concentrates on the main event.

Tom L: A sharp record photograph but the building is over exposed - sorry.

  2. 1. Andre H. An incongruous focal point in the city streetscape. Whatever the city’s link with steam locomotion, this is surely a brutal way of recording it in the public realm. But is it street art? A good record shot.

    2. Chris S. Lovely light adorning the moisture in every stem of the undergrowth. An ephemeral moment, no doubt - nicely seen.

    3. Dave C. A great action shot, perfectly capturing the manoeuvres of the bend. The rider’s face, and the sense of movement in the wheels, add to my engagement.

    4. Elaine J. Wonderful light bathes the moorland, having penetrated a moody, cloud-filled sky. The foreground of evergreen trees, almost in silhouette, add depth to this wide landscape.

    5. Geoff C. An atmospheric night scene, saturated in the evocative colours of the vendors' signs. Should I venture into the street? The 'no entry' sign on the paving is a nice touch.

6.Ken G. I like the simplicity of the composition, and of the colour palette. The table is subsumed, the chairs relegated to graphic shapes.

    7. Malcolm R. Taken into the morning light, this image shows no sign of human intervention. It has a magical quality to it.

    8. Nigel T. A man-made rural landscape - the mansion, the monument, fences and a car. There is history here. The light and long shadows add interest to the expanse of the open meadows.

    9. Phil C. A fun image that captures a unique scene, an encounter with giant, colourful eggs. This would surely delight any child at Easter. But why? The best images raise questions in the viewer.

    10. My photo.

    11. Tom L. A most striking image of a famous scene. Bathed in light, it has a graphic quality, resembling an intricate pencil drawing. I wonder what processing has been carried out on the digital file.

Quick, call Doc and Marty. It looks like an interesting attempt to put a train in space, must be impressive to see it for real. I hope it doesn’t cause accidents as people get distracted from driving.

    Chris
Pleased the dog walk series continues, this is a good spot and something that is hard to capture. Lovely.

    Dave
Looks like you are getting to grips with the new kit. The biker s nicely frozen in time as he leans to take the bend.

    Elaine
Ah, great light and a Scottish landscape, a winning combination.

    Geoff
This looks like the place to go for good food and conversation, the illuminated signs are well rendered.

    Ken
So simple and yet so difficult to achieve. Beautiful composition and colours.

    Malcolm
The start of the day, looks like a lovely way to start it, out with your camera for a walk.

    Nigel
This is nicely framed, the column fills the space on the right nicely. I don’t know the location but looks like a good place to visit.

    Mine

    Richard
The Q has worked well here, the high iso is not obvious and the colours render well given the lack of light. Well composed out of an everyday scene.

    Tom
This is somewhere I have always wanted to visit. I came close once but ran out of time while in the area. This is a dramatic view of a stunning location.

  4. Andre H: I trust this was a replica. Quite bizarre. Was this a one-off in Wroclaw?

Chris S: Very imaginative. Is this as seen? Or was there some curious post-processing?

Dave C: As good as it needs be. You have captured the spirit of this.

Elaine J: Indeed somewhere? Much of the elements needed to sum up wild Scotland with its modern coniferous plantations.

Geoff C: Another fine image from a f/3.5 Elmar on a IIIg. Modern equipment would create no more acceptable image. A testament to the days of Leitz.

Ken G: Dynamic colour and a bold composition. I have not seen anything quite like that before.

Malcolm R: Serene. No flare. Just a well rendered image. Very satisfactory.

Nigel T: What a find. I never knew this place existed in Hertfordshire. Wealthy owners no doubt - hopefully not oligarchs. Very informative image.

Phil C: You would find this and record it! There must be a story attached.

Richard B: Entirely sufficient. A cracker. And good colour.

    Tom L: Magnificent.

Julian P: I sent my image to all of you by mistake and Phil failed to put it in the list this month. It was entitled Winter afternoon by the Beauly Firth at Milton of Redcastle. Vario Elmar-R 35-70 f/4  at f/6.8,  ASA 200, 1/750 s.  Probably at the 35mm setting.  M240 camera.

    1. To glacio: Hi, The image is of young silver birch trees. They were back-lite following a damp start to the day. What you see is, in the main, a straight shot. I have cropped the original a little and removed a small number of burnt-out patches on the left. I used a longer focal length setting but I'm not very good these days at keeping a steady hand so some of my photos are not as sharp as I would like - this is one such image, I sharpened it very slightly. Traditionally I have always used RAW files but it's all too easy to make adjustments so my current project is to capture in JPG and (preferably) no post processing.

  6. Andre H - amazing statue, must have been some effort to get that locomotive and track at such an angle. The image is beautiful and sharp and you’ve done very well with the exposure to retain the detail in the locomotive against the bright sky.

Chris S - an interesting ‘pattern’ image which is well exposed.

Dave C - great classic bike image. However, I would have been tempted to remove the part bike on the left, as this draws the attention away from the main subject.

Elaine J - Scotland is a wonderful place for landscape photography and this is a nice example. I like the trees in the foreground and the ‘layers’ behind them, making a very pleasing image.

Geoff C - love Tokyo and these small streets and this image captures the atmosphere very well. Would have been great if you could have added just a little more light to give more detail in the shadows.

Ken G - very simple image with a limited colour range which makes for an intriguing picture. It’s one I keep coming back to as I think it really is very effective.

Malcolm R - very nice, as you’ve captured the morning atmosphere very well without blowing the highlights in the sky too much.

Nigel T - great landscape with excellent clarity, composition and exposure.

Phil C - those look like big Easter Eggs. Like the way the eggs are behind the foreground trees, which to me, adds interest. Good composition and exposure.

Richard B - love this idea of only including the waist down part of the person. I hate following rules, but in this case I think the image may have worked better if the person was on the left third of the frame, giving her more space to walk into. Again, I do think it’s a fabulous image.

  7. Andre: Wroclav is a thriving Polish city now, but it was the last German city in 1945 to surrender to Stalin’s army. It was, for centuries, Breslau. The occupation in the late 1940s was very destructive, but railways were an important part of its pre 1940 economy I spent two short visits in 2018 at a British owned company which organised IT for UK businesses. And I was glad I wasn’t driving around the ring road!

Chris S - Wooden Gossamer - This is a fine impression and works very well.

    Dave C - Donington - nicely done!

Elaine J - Somewhere in Scotland - hard to see how far distant the blue’ish backround was, but still very attractive.

Geoff C - Ikinari Steak - 3G and f 3 Elmar - good for you - I am minded to get out my 1A and similar lens!

Ken G - CDG - Wow! great selection of shapes.

Malcolm R - Early Morning - Good use of backlighting

Nigel T - Hartwell House - Good use of light and pleasing composition,

Phil C - Easter Eggs - what a splendidly odd find!

Richard B - Lines - nearly abstract, but grounded into reality by the figure - pleasing image.

Goodness me a steam punk rocket! What a sight I love it!

    Chris S
I love the abstract feel of this image – the muted tones and the gossamer highlights complement one another.

    Dave C
Another lovely action shot well captured, although it would have been good to have more of a sensation of movement in the wheels.

    Elaine J
A most majestic view – although I do find the foreground trees distracting – perhaps a tighter crop?

    Geoff C
A most atmospheric nighttime shot – I do like the rendering of Porta 400.

    Ken G
I do like the abstract nature of this image the strong colours and shapes make for a most pleasing picture.

    Malcolm R
This is a lovely shot of an early morning in winter with well retained detail in both highlights and shadows.

    Phil C
This is a fun shot – perhaps a tighter crop would have strengthened the overall impact of the image.

    Richard B
I like the interesting shapes, textures and colours – the splash of orange breaks up the rather somber grey background.

    Tom L
A most dramatic image with interesting lighting! The small group of people bottom left give scale and interest to the foreground.

  9. 1. Andre H. Impressive and apparently terrifyingly insecure, is it a real engine? Street photography like no other.

    2. Chris S. Delicate understated colours overlain with the light reflecting branches make a complex pattern reminiscent of the gossamer of the title. The image conveys the unusual light conditions admirably.

    3. Dave C. A good action shot caught at a seemingly impossible angle, the glimpse of the second rider adds to the excitement of the race.

    4. Elaine J. The warm browns of the middle distance slope contrasts powerfully with the blu/greys of the receding mountains whilst the base is held by the dark conifers. A landscape of light and shade.

    5. Geoff C. The mass of illuminated signs dominate the scene and inevitably overpower the deep shadows of the street , even so we have detail in the window of the Steak House where the welcoming chef is at variance with the forbidding No Entry sign. I want to clone out that bit of string in the centre foreground !

    6. Ken G. Simple, vibrant, magic.

    7. Me.

    8. Nigel T. Beautiful light and strong shadows capture the scene perfectly.

    9. Phil C. I like quirky and this is definitely quirky. There has to be a background story here but it is better to leave it to our imaginations to solve the mystery than to provide what may well be a mundane explanation of what is going on.

    10. Richard B. Great colours and a bold composition, simple and very effective.

    11. Tom L. Very dramatic and super definition but somehow the tonal range just doesn’t feel right.
