Andre H charming and natural portrait. A bit posed and would have composed to Aboud water cooler but nice shot.
ReplyDeleteChris S I like the abstraction but maybe could be a bit more punchy to heighten interest.
Dave C good b and w tones.
Dave S well observed and characterful street shot with excellent tonal range.
Geoff C clever composition and I like the subdued colours.
Julian P I really like the subtle colour palette.
Mine.
Malcolm R very quirky Martin Parr-esq shot. Fun
Nigel T beautifully composed and subtle tonal range.
Phil C I very much like the feeling of dynamism via the smoke and excellent composition.
Richard B first class composition and great mood. Fine use of muted colour.
Tom L as ever outstanding composition, sharp, contrasty and compelling
Crane driver (When I clambered up to get at the viewpoint, he said that no visitor to the docks had ever climbed up before - it was a very long climb, and a spectacular view )
ReplyDeleteChris S - Trees… -I like the frame filling and the delicate colours very much.
Dave C - M1 Viaduct - Driven over it so often, but never seen it from this viewpoint. . .and the cloud is perfectly placed.
Dave S - Old Kent Rd -Very atmospheric, but also disturbing. I will look forward to more locations!
Geoff C -Tokyo - Spectacular angle, and its the second look which reveals the lettering
Julian P - Tarn - Super lighting and a worthy image. I recently handed on my Wainwrights to someone rather younger who had not come across them before
Ken G - Sma Glen - I think Scotland is well suited to such gloomy weather. . .just like Wales!
Malcolm R - Orange - Good textures and colours.
Nigel T - Border — We are not short of fences collapsing in ether country but I sometimes wish i
still lived in England.
Phil C - Porsche - Great shot, sad car - panning movement very well done, even showing the ‘other’ car
Richard B - Leaving — good moment captured; good lighting
Tom M —Lisboa tram - Good lighting of a memorable subject (older trams are so much more interesting).
1. Andre H. A portrait of a crane driver gazing out of the frame. I would like to see more of his working environment. The blue rendering of his overalls is a little too saturated to my mind, a distraction from the character of his face. Perhaps this could become part of an environmental series - workers at work.
ReplyDelete2. Chris S. The frost on the trees give this picture a slightly surreal appearance, similar to infrared. I wonder if it would benefit from a touch more contrast in editing.
3. Dave C. The monochrome treatment of the viaduct is well suited, the diagonals drawing the eye to the shape of the aerial structure. The solitary cloud is well seen, adding an appropriate highlight.
4. Dave S. Monopoly locations - an interesting project in London. This documentary image of the Old Kent Road certainly sets the scene. It appears to be candid, perhaps taken with the camera at hip height.
5. Geoff C. The underlying blue tones, matched by the cloud-free sky, create an harmonious image which the photographer has seen, and explored to good effect. I like the graphic effect.
6. Julian P. A striking vista (Innonimate Tarn), bathed in beautiful light, is recorded here on film. I like to think this scene, from 50 years ago, remains unchanged today.
7. Ken G. The black & white treatment adds drama to this rural scene, perhaps at the expense of expressing conventional beauty. I like the tonality. The heavy wall in the foreground - a visual barrier - adds a bit of mystery as to what lays beyond.
8. Malcom R. This composition, seemingly a planting bed or woodland floor, demonstrates the keen interest of the photographer in exploring the scene. There is visual play between the tree trunk and the solitary flower, both of which embrace circular shapes.
9. Nigel T. This rural border scene speaks loudly of barriers. There is no stile, no obvious right of passage, but instead a felled tree trunk, a fence supporting barbed wire, and a closed gate, barriers to those rolling, sunlit fields beyond.
10. Phil C. I like this panned image very much. The photographer ensures the viewer can share the drama of the Porsche speeding out of the frame. The track is underlined, and sits within swathes of green grass at the race circuit. There is subtle reference to other cars.
11. My photo.
12. Tom L. This urban scene could be from the 20th or 21st centuries. It is only the dress of the man by the postcard stand that suggests it is more recent. The leading lines of the tram rails, together with the sunlit facades, ensure the viewer explores the detail of the streetscape.
1. Andre H. A fine, relaxed portrait of the man in his working environment and overalls. Is he contemplating the day to come, or enjoying a tea break, either way he looks happy in his work.
ReplyDelete2. Chris S. Almost an abstract pattern. The touch of warmth of the brown leaves coming through the cold of the frosted branches makes the shot.
3. Dave C. The apparent calm of this shot belies the noise of the traffic above. The cloud gives an ordinary scene a little lift.
4. Dave S. A great idea for a project. The open mouth is intriguing and a little disturbing, is he in pain or protesting volubly about having his picture taken? The mouth is also one of the series of circles (the badge, the ring and the design on the bag) that make the image gel. Every Lidll helps!
5. Geoff C. A simple design, the roundness of the Dentsu logo pillar is in contrast to the severe rectangles of the tower block itself and we are left guessing at their relative sizes. The clear sky and monochromatic blues and greys of the building make a satisfying architectural image.
6. Julian P. Superb light on a beautiful location. W is out there somewhere blowing in the wind.
7. Ken G. No doubt an inspiring view down the valley but I can not help wondering whether the foreground walls on each side of the road really add anything to the image.
8. Me.
9. Nigel T. Not sure which side of the border this is but things certainly look greener on the other side.
10. Phi C. Nice panning. “Come in no.6 your time is up”.
11. Richard B. Slightly claustrophobic feeling here. What is the figure leaving and what is he/she entering? Unanswered questions, light in the gloom.
12. Tom L. Interesting that a Portuguese tram should be advertising Irish whiskey. Gives a flavour of Milan.
Andre
ReplyDeleteWell framed and a nice natural portrait.
Chris
Nicely seen, the varying colours in the foliage add interest to a frame that has a slightly spooky feel to it.
Dave C
A unusual view of the M1 nicely executed in black and white.
Dave S
What a great idea for a project, hope it is progressing well, this is a great start.
Geoff
Another usual angle, this seems to show the building blending into the surrounding skies, nicely framed.
Julian
A lovely landscape, I wonder if it has changed much since then?
Ken
Another photo that makes me want to head out into the wilds of Scotland.
Malcolm
The splash of orange stands out nicely and the shape is echoed in the tree trunk, a good spot.
Nigel
The title adds to this photo and gives the space significance. It’s a lovely calm photo.

Richard
This is a real delight, well framed and perfect lighting, mysterious and inviting.
Tom
Gorgeous black and white works well, as does the framing with the tram making its way through the frame.
Andre H. Engaging environmental portrait enhanced by complementary colours
ReplyDeleteChris S. Very pleasing composition with the central swirl of colour adding emphasis
Dave C. Bold perspective conveying the momentum of the road, and well executed to overcome the exposure challenge
My picture
Geoff C. Pleasing combination of soaring perspective and uniform colours linking the building and sky
Julian P. Classic landscape beautifully captured in colour, tone and the juxtaposition of the lake with the break in the clouds
Ken G. Atmospheric image, especially attractive how the textures of the layers recede into the distance
Malcolm R. Interesting counterpoint between the flower and the wood, perhaps making a triangle with the darker leaves
Nigel T. Lovely composition and colours made more evocative by the border in the title, more than purely visually appealing
Phil C. Dynamic framing, unusual and effective conveying urgency through the slant and the car to left of frame
Richard B. Excellent image, composition, lighting, colour all produce a mysterious and atmospheric view which elevated something ordinary into something special
Tom L. Great picture, perfect positioning of the tram and the particular flavour of mono tone/contrast reinforces the vintage feel of the subject

ReplyDeleteAndre H: Very honest and realistic. A good study.
Chris S: A very good blend of structure, frost detail and leaf colour. You have created a good atmospheric shot.
Dave C: I like the blend of linear elements with the ultimate curve of the viaduct.
Dave S: I like the idea of the project and know that Old Kent Road is the cheapest site, but I am worried you have offended this guy. That apart there is plenty to admire.
Geoff C: Unusual. I get a sense of Moiré fringing in the higher levels of the building.
Julian P: Mine
Ken G: Not a place I know (except by reputation) and this appeals to me, but even more so in colour.
Malcolm R: I like the lightness of this. Nothing serious but using the camera to good effect.
Nigel T: I feel a project coming on! Barbed wire but not razor wire. Just a non-descript field boundary that takes the honour here.
Phil C: Your caption says it all. Not a good advertisement. You had an uninterrupted view. It even looks rural.
Richard B: For me an optical illusion. If you neglect the foreground can you prove whether the person is going up- or down-stairs?
Tom L: This is an image at the right place and time. It works well. I use the same lens/body combination when not minding to carry extra weight. Is yours the f/3.5 or f/4 lens version? I use both.

ReplyDeleteA portrait of a working man in his daily environment – the background is a little busy and detracts slightly.
Chris S
An interesting take on trees in winter – the image has an almost abstract feel to it.
Dave C
The strong diagonal line of the viaduct is a counterpoint to the simple wooden handrail, the shadows look a little too dark with interesting detail lost.
Dave S
I do like the idea of the project, the gentleman is full of character, I find the left-hand side lacking in interest although I assume this indicates the location for those in the know.
Geoff C
The strong lines give the image a dramatic feel and the overall blue hue works well.
Julian P
A most dramatic scene – well captured on Kodachrome
Ken G
The hills and clouds give the image a dramatic feel, although I find the dry-stone wall’s rendering rather harsh.
Malcolm R
I like this image – the tree trunk and flower provide a counterpoint to the surrounding greenery.
Phil C
Oh dear that smoke looks like an expensive repair for the owner. The position of the car in the frame and the following trail of smoke is well captured in this panned shot.
Richard B
I do like this image – muted tones with human interest and the strong shape of the ascending stairs.
Tom L
A well captured and familiar Lisbon scene, I do like the B & W treatment.
Andre H
ReplyDeleteWell seen candid.
Chris S
Quite a busy image, shame about the lack of light.
Dave C
Mine.
Dave S
Good start to the project, strong image.
Geoff C
Muted colours, different composition.
Julian P
Good record of the scene, good light.
Ken G
Dark moody landscape, maybe lose a bit from the sky.
Malcolm R
A well seen triangular composition.
Nigel T
Good rustic image, busy composition.
Phil C
Good motorsport image, I like the inclusion of the smoke.
Richard B
Well framed, good control of the lighting.
Tom L
Excellent monochrome, well composed.
