The Kelpies, Taken with my Lumix FZ1000, with a Leica lens. The shot was taken evening time when the Kelpies are lit-up in different colours. Quite a spectacular sight and stand around 100ft high.

M240, ZM 35/1.4 Taken from my balcony at the White Horse Inn, St Wolfgang. One of my favourite hotels in the glorious Salzkammergut region of Austria. Colleagues may find the name familiar as it is of course the hotel that the stage musical "White Horse Inn' was written around. The musical is still performed annually in St. Wolfgang.

ReplyDeleteGreat to see a shot from a screw Leica and lens, more than 80 years old and still great quality. I like the treatment, looks like a nice print from a family album, the one duck seemingly walking on water.
Elaine J
This captures the beauty of the sculpture, well framed too with the heads nicely separated. I hope I get to see them at some stage.
Keith W
A nice record of the visit. From what I hear the event was a big success.
Malcolm R
Very picturesque, nice soft autumnal feeling, a scene from a Miss Marple perhaps.
Michael B
That is a great view beautifully captured,, the reflections just right. Hope you had a great time there.
Mike H
Nicely framed, I like the way the lighthouse seems to be part of the cliff, great skies too.
Mick M
So simple, but very calming and really well seen. I can’t decide whether it is better with a slight crop to the right, removing the curve near bottom right, it makes a different picture if you do. Very nice.
Mine
Richard B
A great portrait, I like the fact they are looking away, good light too.
Theodore D
That is an impressive sand sculpture, and the framing gives a good view of both the larger faces and the hordes seeming to come through a gap on the mountain of faces. Scary stuff.
Tom
A dramatic landscape that works well in black and white, I’m sure you took many wonderful pictures there.
David F
ReplyDeleteNicely Composed shot, and on a camera even older than me.
Elaine J
Good capture of very imposing statues that probably look even better in the dark with their green lighting. I might have been tempted to crop/remove/reduce the brightness of the bright lights nearest the camera.
Keith W
Projects a good impression of the bustle during the recent visit to Leica HQ. I think these are very interesting times for photographers with the speed of changes, and "improvements” moving very fast right now. Leica has a tricky path to traverse, holding onto its existing customers, and recruit a new/younger market.
Malcolm R
A beautiful and bucolic shot of what I think is a very English landscape. It’s very soft looking, and quite nice for that.
Michael B
Gorgeous shot of a very beautiful part of the world. I’ve spent a lot of time over the years in nearby St Gilgen (Hollweger Hotel) and liked it so much I nearly moved there. The train to the top of the mountain from St Wolfgang always tests my unease of heights.

Unusual shot, which I quite like - making me think where has the road or path come from and where’s it going to.
Phil C
A really nice shot, that reminds me of the poster for one of my favourite films, “Manhattan” with Woody Allen and Diane Keaton, perhaps because of that I’d have preferred it had the shot been taken a little closer to the subjects.
Richard B
Lovely portrait of a characterful young lady with a lovely smile. Although the lighting on her face is nice, to my eyes her face/hands seems a little red - it could be she was near a fire but we don’t see this. Great shot.
Theodore D
What an amazing sand sculpture, and a well taken shot that shows the detail involved very well.
Tom
The viewer certainly sees and feels the power of the water-flow from your high viewpoint. Iceland must be a photographers paradise. Great shot.
1. David F. A fair sprinkling of avian wildlife in this nicely balanced picture. The sparkle on the water is attractive and shadow detail well held although definition could be better - is it a scan of the negative? I find white borders (unless they are very fine) seriously distracting when viewed on a on a computer and much less so on a physical print. Maybe a crop to remove the sky areas and the bench on the right? Good to see the vintage camera and lens in action.
ReplyDelete2. Elaine J. I have not seen an evening shot of these before, they are, if anything, even more impressive photographed this way and the problem of the pylons etc in the background disappears.
3. Keith W. A good memento of the visit, the lady on the right is just waiting for her target to turn towards her before taking her shot.
4. Me.
5. Michael B. A spectacular view, the low cloud adds to the layered effect of lake, woods and mountains.
6. Mike H. An effective composition of blues, greens and browns taken from just the right position showing a glimpse of the lighthouse and allowing the top of the ridge to break the horizon.
7. Mick M. Another simple composition from another vintage Leica. The textural and tonal difference between the sea and the road surface, divided by the dark shadow of the wall makes a satisfyingly graphic image but I do wonder whether the bottom right corner adds or detracts from the effect.
8. Phil C. The seated figures silhouetted against the bright backdrop of the lake area are a relief from the very dark shadowy foreground.
9. Richard B. Three sparkling eyes. She looks very happy about something and if cats can look apprehensive that cat looks apprehensive. There is a story here somewhere - it is up to us to invent our own interpretation of what is going on in Transylvania.
10. Theodore D. Quite incredible sculptures, having done a Google search I found a short video covering the whole show of which this is just a small part. Prominence has been given to the grotesque faces on the high bank leaving the cascade of figures rather too small in the frame to do them (and the artist ) full justice.
11. Tom. An irresistible subject carefully framed and pin sharp from front to back. The height of the fall is anyone’s guess but it is spectacular and the hint of spray against the hills in the background lends credence to the force of the water.
Marcolm R Malvern West
ReplyDeleteA glorious shot with wonderful muted colours, the church in the foreground with lovely autumn foliage gives an excellent focal point. I like the mist which provides aerial perspective. If it were mine I would have to clone out the white tip of a gable end bottom right which I find a distraction.
Mike H Room with a view
Beautiful picture, I love to see a ridge of cloud, and excellent reflection. You should of course have built a story of a ten mile hike across mountains at dawn to capture the photograph.
Mike H Lighthouse
Wonderful light, moody sky, looks an interesting subject. However for me the lighthouse is too small in the frame, it is almost lost in a vast seascape. Having said this I was not there, and to make it bigger avoiding an aerial shot would probably involve abseiling over the cliff!
Phil C
Lovely back lit shot with good atmosphere, if it were mine I would crop the right hand side just leaving the edge of the tree as a frame. I would also crop to the left most of the blue water.
Richard B Lady with cat
For me this is a gem, wonderful character, holding a cat in beautiful light, and the background tells a story. If it were mine I would have to get rid of the bright white items in the background to the left of her shoulder, easily done with my favourite, the clone stamp.
David F
ReplyDeleteTimeless scene taken with a timeless camera. Like the processing.
Elaine J
Very effective. Maybe take the brightness of the light bottom left down a little?
Malcolm R
Very nice. The first hints of Autumn colours. Like the mistyness helping to emphasis the foreground.
Michael B
Not bad from a hotel balcony! Very nice shot.
Mike H
Very much like the composition. The very dark cloud seems a bit at odds with scene though.
Mick M
Great camera and lens performing well. Not sure image works for me.
Phil C
Clever exposure with some foreground interest. Like to see a bit more of what they are seeing.
Richard B
Lovely image and well taken with a 28mm lens.
Theodore D
The light shows the detail in the sculpture beautifully. Well balances section of the artwork included in the image.
Tom
Another nicely composed image showing great detail in the rocks. Shutter speed looks perfect for the water.
David F. - Fishing: Lovely to see the results from vintage equipment looking so good.
ReplyDeleteElaine J. - The Kelpies: I am enjoying your composition Elaine and the juxtaposition of the two Kelpies in particular.
Keith W. - Man in the Middle: An interesting record shot of the interaction between guests and tour guide. it must have been a very enjoyable meet.
Malcom R. - Malvern West: An evocative scene. So peaceful and with lovely colours.
Mike B. - A Room With A View: Mine
Mike H. - Lighthouse at the bottom of the cliff: Well we are certainly getting what it says on the tin so to speak. Nice colours again and an interesting sky.
Mick M. - An enjoyable minimalist mono. In a way it is a pity there is just a tad more detail in the sky.
Phil C. - Derwentwater: Another dark image which is rapidly becoming your style Phil. Maybe just a little lifting of the light on the track to the figures? What do you think?
Richard B. - Lady with Cat: A striking portrait of a lady in rude health.
Theodore D. - Demon Hordes: A cracking image from the ‘Q’ but I wish you had cropped out the post bottom left.
Tom - Icelandic Waterfall: An excellent composition and enjoyable monochrome. The SL doesn’t let you down.
1) David F. I have no experience of early mechanical cameras, so am always pleased to see what can be achieved. The composition here is timeless, although I do feel that it lacks subject interest.
ReplyDelete2) Elaine J. An impressive shot of these towering sculptures. The immensity is reinforced by the light. The exposure is well controlled, the last vestiges of light in the sky adding background interest.
3) Keith W. Very much of the moment. Would the composition benefit from a crop on the right hand side to concentrate attention on Mr Luhring?
4) Malcolm R. Lovely pastoral scene, carefully crafted with a flash of red foliage at the main point of interest - the church. To my mind, it would benefit from the omission of the sky in the background, but that’s a minor point.
5) Michael B. Great colour. I love the marbled effect on the water.
6) Michael H. It suggests South Stack on Anglesey - I wonder? A tantalising glimpse of the lighthouse with plenty of foreground interest. Nicely exposed.
7) Mick M. This is well suited to monochrome with its simple geometry and texture. The detail retained in the metalled, promenade surface and raised sea wall are essential to the overall success of the composition.
8) Phil C. I like the framing, although it would have been improved if there had been no overlap between the foliage and the seated figure beyond. The "contra jour" view has created a partial silhouette, the exposure poised between full silhouette and colour.
9) Richard B. My image.
10) Thoedore D. Impressive sculpture - oh to have talent! The simple colour palette is effective . The scale is uncertain, but certainly large, suggested only by the inclusion of the truncated post in the foreground.
11) Tom. A balanced composition, high contrast and well exposed. The spray rising from the torrent adds atmosphere.
David F.
ReplyDeleteYou have inspired me to take out my 1936 II for a run. Lovely evocative shot that works as time travel to the past.
Elaine J.
How magnificent! Great angle for showing these two sculptures dramatically in the best way possible.
Keith W.
I think I would have preferred a different angle to bring the center of interest more importance?
Malcom R.
The best time of year if you love color photography, is it not? Well done idyllic scene from a fine vantage point.
Mike B.
Beautiful panoramic shot and a luxurious view indeed! If nature cold be prodded, then a little less cloud cover in the center would bring out the mountains behind.
Mike H.
Dramatic viewing angle reminiscent of something from a Hitchcock film; well done!
Mick M.
Good work with difficult lighting. The stark contrast of the roadway with the many gradations of grey in the water works very well for me.
Phil C.
Evocative and poetic shot; for me just a tad too dark..
Richard B
Striking shot; a little too close for me since the woman’s head has been enlarged by the lens.
Theodore D
Me…Missed cropping that thing in the lower left. (13 in. screen not best for editing!)
Tom
Dramatic….Beautiful….Powerful. Well done!
