  1. Cris R - untitled: A colourful shot Cris but it does leave me wanting to know about the character wearing the feathers. Maybe that's a good thing?

David F - Blue, white and orange: I like the idea. Have you tried a slightly tighter crop to concentrate on the flower heads at the expense of the foreground stalks?

Dennis S. - Farming 1960’s style: An idyllic pastoral scene. Such a pity the light was so flat which might otherwise have added more punch.

Elaine J. - Ely Cathedral: Your exposure is pretty good on this one Elaine but I think you have too much in the image and it is difficult to find a subject to focus on. There looks to be plenty to photograph so I will make a note to visit when I can.

Keith W. - Leading Porter: A really good environmental portrait with super lighting. I do wish you hadn’t included the other character who is very distracting.

Malcolm R. - Narrow Boat Passengers: Well spotted but again the light didn’t favour you.

Mike B - Aiquille Du Midi: Mine

Mike H - Fishermans Meeting: Well spotted. Do we really need the second boat? It does divide the image.

Mick M - Glider: I had to look twice before I spotted the second aircraft nicely framed between the wing and tailplane. Cleverly done.

Phil C - Commando Memorial: Interesting treatment Phil. Obviously a difficult place to get a clear shot with all that activity around the memorial.

Richard B - Pool at Night: Nicely exposed and lovely light on the trees, but I’d love to have seen somebody in the water or on the side of the pool in the right foreground.

Tom L - Pierced: An enjoyable street portrait. Pin sharp, beautifully exposed and converted.

Lovely colours and there is a sense of mystery to this one. The chap in the hat at the back is slightly distracting but he is nicely out of focus, nice shot.

    David F
Three simple colours make for a nice photograph, focus works well too.

    Dennis S
Good to see some vintage machinery in action, must have been an incredible sight and sound. Nicely framed photo, the bales in front giving context to the shot.

    Elaine J
Nice depth to this one and I’m sure you all had a great day.

    Keith W
A lovely portrait of the porter, and I think the chap in the bowler hat on the right adds to the frame. My first thought was to crop him out but the pose and the paper just add to the moment.

    Malcolm R
Rosie and Jim aboard their narrow boat, where else would they be?

    Michael B
This is lovely, the mysterious mountain through the cloud, just perfect.

    Mike H
What a glorious day! The two figures of the fishermen and their boats make for a nice shot, one wonders what they are saying. Nicely cropped too.

    Mick M
Very well framed, nice and tight under the brooding sky with the other glider in the distance.

    Mine

    Richard B
The water looks like milk. There’s lots of detail in there, the Q has done a wonderful job in the tough light.

    Tom L
A strong portrait, the light works well and you get a feel for the moment and the man.

  3. Chris R: Colourful shot, and it raises the question as why would a shaven headed young man be wearing Feather Wings and Rupert the Bear’s Trousers? In a perfect world perhaps the figure either side would be missing - but, hey, that’s life.

David F: Nice bands of colourful flowers.

Dennis S: Interesting last century farming scene that perhaps could be brightened a little, especially around the focal points in the photograph.

Elaine J: Well exposed interior, where both strong and low light need careful handling. I found the ladies head popping up bottom left a little distracting?

Keith W: Lovely photo with plenty of detail and the main focal points of interest are well lit. I find through that the bowler hatted newspaper reader just draws your attention away from all the main points of the photo though.

Malcolm R: Those piskies get everywhere.

Michael B: Beautiful atmospheric dreamlike shot.

    Mike H: Me

Mick M: I like the tones and the composition of this one, excellent detail too.

Phil C: It looks like a photo school has descended onto the memorial. Perhaps either waiting for the scene to clear, or getting closer and featuring a just one or two of the photographers and the memorial would have made it a stronger image for me.

Richard B: Good shot, well lit and good detail. Looks like the set-up scene in a movie where something is just about to happen.

Tom L: Excellent street portrait, well lit, good detail, and an interesting face.

Well seen, interesting juxtaposition. In my view using such vivid and strong colours, I would be very careful to isolate any completing background.

    Keith W
Great atmospheric shot, wonderful light. In my view this is two photographs, if it were mine I would work on it as such, if I couldn’t find an angle to take the shot placing the two figures closer together.

    Michael B
I like this, it makes me feel cold to look at it.

Richard B The pool at night.
Great shot well seen and well executed, you have retained detail in the highlights, this has a great tonal range and the blocked out shadow area really add to the composition. This is one of those pictures where my eye is looking for something to rest on, a strategically placed person (remaining gender neutral) would make a difference for me.

  5. 1) Cris R. Colourful. I would have preferred to see at least a hint of the face of the person in the colourful costume.

    2) David F. The blue and orange flowers work well together. I like the verticality of the stems and leaves.

    3) Dennis S. Takes me back to rural life near my home in Norfolk in the 1960s. The exposure in the shadows seems to have suffered slightly at the the expense of the bright sky. The cloud detail is well retained and welcome.

    4) Elaine J. The eye is lead through to the ornate scene beyond the screen. I find the lady’s hat and the pulpit a little distracting.

    5) Keith W. The natural light and steam are effective. Lovely atmosphere. The newspaper reader, far right and partially cropped, is distracting and adds nothing to the composition to my mind.

    6) Malcolm R. A colourful, busy scene. I would have preferred a wider angle of view that gives the context of the narrow boat.

    7) Michael B. The swirling cloud adds a sense of menace to the barren peak. The choice of monochrome is effective.

    8) Michael H. Lovely light and colour. To my eye the composition is undermined by the the open space that sits between the two boats. I wonder if the presence of other obstacles on the beach prevented a different angle of view being taken. Sometimes the “moment” dictates a fast reaction, of course.

    9) Mick M. An unusual subject and view, captured very well. A compelling image, perfectly composed and exposed.

    10) Phil C. Reminiscent of a sepia tone postcard image from the mid 20th century. The figures complement one another and lead the eye to the statue.

    11) Richard B. My photo.

    12) Tom L. A unusual portrait - powerful. The shallow depth of field complements the image ensuring there are no distractions, although I think the eye is just a little too soft.

  6. 1. Cris R. A colourful character with his rainbow wings, the chap to the right also appears to be oddly dressed but we have no idea of what is going on so in that respect a little more context would help tell the story.

    2. David F. A striking combination of colours, the out of focus red hot pokers at the back work well with the foreground blues but that grass seed head at the bottom left interferes with the blues and just lets it down.

    3. Dennis S. Not the kind of harvesting you see every day so well worth a few pictures. Maybe a lower viewpoint to position the “paddles”against the sky?

    4. Elaine J. I find it difficult to focus on any particular part of this image there seems to be so many layers in it.

    5. Keith W. A wonderfully lugubrious expression on this chap’s face contrasting with the self satisfied smile of the City Gent.

    6. Me.

    7. Michael B. The cloud surrounding the peak gives the mountain an improbably etherial aspect.

    8. Mike H. The boat on the right detracts from the main subject of the two men sitting beside the second boat and it makes rather uncomfortable “tennis match” viewing. Bringing the two men more central would prevent the shadow of the boat and its mooring line from disappearing off the edge of the picture.

    9. Mike M. Good to see an original SL and film in use. The tight framing has produced some interesting shapes exaggerating the form of the glider and complimenting the aircraft in the background. I do find that the white border dominates and degrades the highlights the picture itself.

    10. Phil C. It is always difficult to avoid the tourists at this spot so including them in the shot is the other option and shows how popular the statue is and also the wild countryside all around. The warm tone of this rendition works well but I have doubts about the ragged border.

    11. Richard B. This reminds me of Winston O Link’s “Steam, Steel and Stars” images. The lighting has turned a fairly ordinary image into something quite dramatic.

    12. Tom L. An interesting face which differential focus has separated from the church(?) background. Slightly over-sharpened around the back of the head and neck?

  7. Chris R
Very colourful, but left guessing the context.

    David F
Lovely pastle colours set off the blue blooms well.

    Dennis S
    A timeless scene well captured.

    Elaine J
Captures the grandure of the Cathedral well.

    Malcolm R
Colourful fun picture. Nicely seen. Well balanced by the perfectly coiled rope.

    Michael B
The cloud frammes the peak very nicely. The event sound great and must have provided many opportunities for you.

    Mike H
Love the light on the boat on the right. Probably the shot for me.

    Mick M
Good to see a SL2 shot. Very nicely compossed, taken and presented..

    Phil C
Good to see so many visitors and I think they enhance the image. Proof of the use of mobile phones as cameras - everyone has one.

    Richard B
Wondering if this would be better if presented colour. Well composed.

    Tom L
Lovely sharp portrait well presented. Looks like he is in mid-sentance.
