"You can't park there, Mate!"
Leica Q2. 28mm (cropped a bit), 1/100s @ f/8. ISO 100.
I don't like Rubberneckers! Normally I would have continued on my walk around town, but someone behind me uttered, "You can't park there, Mate!" to someone who was parking behind the small crowd on the pavement.
So: I had the title. I had the scene. Not long after I had the picture. I then continued my walk.
(Reports from the Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service indicted that the driver, who was trapped, had been assisted out of the vehicle and handed over to the Ambulance Service. The incident was handed over to Thames Valley Police.)

This is (or was!) the rear entrance to the cathedral in Bratislava, a city of which I became very fond when I worked there.

Willow weaving at Hyde Hall RHS gardens. The addition of the ‘eyes’ gave me the creeps - and they do follow you… I call it "I see you babe..” Shot on an old Leica T with a 35mm TL Summilux lens.

You can't park there, Mate!
Had I been walking past I wonder if I would have taken the shot - perhaps - but in terms of street photography it seems a perfectly valid subject.
Andre H
The cathedral in Bratislava
Certainly no shortage of textures both in the old woodwork and in the crumbling wall. I wonder what it would look like in mono.
Brian O
Willow weaving - ‘see you babe’
The willow to the left was perhaps a little distracting for but that’s a clever title.
Dave C
Into the light
A great subject in mono but it may be worth cropping some of the background detail.
David Ro
A busy couple
The lack of surrounding detail made this a most effective shot.
Dave S
Battersea Power Station
The strong evening colour and the balancingh reflection worked very well.
Harry H
Leth-Allt Falls
A fine landscape and an ideal subject for such a strong ND filter.
Julian P
Castle Craig
Very interesting lighting effect with the castle seeming as if it was in a spotlight.
Ken G
Sri Lankan Bus Station
The two figures caught in the foreground framed the busy scene very well.
Ken L
Starburst Bonfire night
Well captured.
Malcolm R
Lost
Well observed detail and perfect foreground separation (and I never realised M lenses can be mounted on Fuji XF bodies - useful).
Nigel T
Fashion Gallery, National Museum of Scotland,
Your choice of very high viewpoint made this picture very effective.
Phil C
Rhododendron leaves
A fine botanical study capturing good young leaf colouring.
Richard B
On the Fence
What a highbrow fence!
Alex B “ You can’t park there, Mate"
ReplyDeleteVery journalistic and very well put together!
Brian O 'Willow Weaving'. Good find and really a little unnerving
Dave C 'In to the Light’ Good use of light and surface of the road and pavement.
David Ro Coffee was clearly an objective!
Dave S . 'Battersea Power Station’ Excellent use of available light and river reflection.
Harry H 'Leith Allt Falls, Skyle Good use of shape of land and water.
Julian P 'Castle Crag Black Isle' The light on the castlt is super.
Ken G 'Sli Lanken Bus Station' Good use of the publicity and the ‘bus.
Ken L ‘Starburs't Excellent use of Bonfare Night fire works
Malcolm R ‘Lost’ Good Find
Nigel T ‘Fashion Gallery, Edinburgh Nat Musuem. Well seen and good angle of picture.
Phil C “Rhododendrun leave, Bodnant Gardens’ Good use of colou, shape aand background
Phiplo G “Shard on a damp evening’’ Excellent use of evening light.
Richard B 'On the Fence Cambridge’ Very nostalgic, for mre, by 44 years.
Alex B,
ReplyDeleteInteresting scene, maybe a square crop to include the traffic light.
Andre H,
A good record shot, but maybe lose the graffiti on the right.
Brian O,
A striking scene, may be crop a little to the left to take out the lens flare.
Dave C,
Mine
David Ro,
Well, seen image, maybe a bit more post processing.
Dave S,
Good golden hour lighting.
Harry H,
A good waterfall scene, but personally I would like a faster shutter speed.
Julian P,
A very good layered landscape.
Ken G,
A well seen candid, but foreground a bit distracting.
Ken L,
A very good capture, of a very difficult subject.
Malcolm R,
Well, seen colourful image.
Nigel T,
Nice inclusion of a real person.
Phil C,
Good use portrait format, shape and design.
Phillip G,
A sharp Shard, an excellent monochrome image.
Richard B,
An excellent monochrome, but dislike the half posters to the left.
ReplyDelete1. Alex B. A perfect example of why we should always have a camera to hand. We never know what is going to happen next. This is just enough to tell the story without intruding on someone’s disaster.
2. Andre H. Muted colours and down at heel textures. No comparison with that other No.10.
3. Brian O. It had to be photographed - perhaps in portrait format though?
4. Dave C. Backlighting has thrown good light on the weaving line of bricks, the lean to the right is a little de-stabilising.
5. David Ro. I wonder if he is the butler tagging along behind. An amusing shot but more light on the figures please.
6. Dave S. Taken at dusk presumably? The lights in the buildings and their eflections add to the appeal of the shot but it is the lighter building that stands out rather than the power station.
7. Harry H. Nice contrast between the sharp hard rocks in the foreground and the soft flowing tones of the water.
8. Julian P. The ploughed field, hedgerow and castle have caught the sun contrasting them vividly with the dark tones of the loch and mountains beyond. Very atmospheric.
9. Ken G. The foreground figures give a sense of depth to this busy scene, but why monochrome - it is surely full of colour?
10. Ken L. This shot in the dark has worked well
11. Me.
12. Nigel T. Fashion is a strange thing, I wonder what the visitor makes of those exhibits.
13. Phil C. The contrasting green and the gold underside of the leaf is very striking, I might lose that white patch on the righthand edge.
14. Philip G. A fine nighttime shot, the wet pavements make all the difference.
15. Richard B. A typical feature of Cambridge but the treatment raises it far above the ordinary. It appears to be a nighttime shot but the exposure details suggest otherwise.
Alex
ReplyDeleteOn the spot news photography. You have captured the moment without intruding, hope everyone was ok.
Andre
I like the muted tones of the wall, and all those details in the crumbling masonry and doors that look like they have been very well used.
Brian
They do have some wonderful willow displays at Hyde Hall. I saw this one and can say you have caught it really well, just close enough to add emphasis and detail.
Dave C
The perfect subject for black and white, nicely seen and well executed.
David Ro
They do look to be in a hurry, or maybe she is trying to escape from a stranger who insists on offering coffee to passersby! :) You’ve timed it well with them both in step with each other.
Dave S
The reflections in the still water makes this shot, take at just the right time as the light fades. Every time I see a picture of Battersea Power Station I make a mental note to visit, but so far I’ve not made it. I was luck enough to photograph it before redevelopment so really ought to see what they have done to the place.
Harry
A lovely landscape, the flow of the water perfectly captured.
Julian
The light falling on the castle makes this picture as it offers shelter from the approaching storm clouds.
Ken G
I like the way the figures in the foreground frame the couples near the bus, and the black and white keeps us focused on the people and not the advertising.
Ken L
Not an easy picture to take, but this captures the drama of the event.
Malcolm
The subject is well separated from the background, and given that it is in a tree the story of a lost glove is well told.
Nigel
Who is on display and who is watching? The top down view mixes people with mannequins, nicely done.
Mine
Philip G
The damp pavement makes for the perfect canvas to reflect the lights of the surrounding buildings, great shot.
Richard
Well seen and beautifully produced. Somehow it feels like a sad scene, yet of course it is the opposite.
Alex
ReplyDeleteMy first thought was that this was an old image from the troubles in Northern Ireland. If it had been in colour that thought would not have crossed my mind. Good journalism.
Andre
I do like the understated tones and different textures of this urban decay. There is a lot of history in that image. Viewed in isolation, I feel that it is missing a reference or an object that tells me I am looking at a Cathedral.
Brian
Nice subject Isolation from the background. I would be tempted to crop in to remove the suggestion of wings, or crop out to include the wings more fully.
Dave C
Super capturing of light shade and patterns. Colour would be a distraction.
David Ro
The pleasing marriage of Landscape and Street photography. I imagine it took a bit of patience to get this shot, but well worth it.
Dave S
Beautifully captured scene at just the right moment. Superb.
Harry
Impressive landscape. The slower shutter speed has highlighted the contrast between the water and the rocks.
Julian
Great framing of the landscape to show off the beautiful light on the castle to best effect. In the ever changing light conditions this moment was well captured.
Ken G
Interesting street scene well captured. I am imagining the vivid colours as I look at the photo, so maybe it cold also work in colour?
Ken L

Malcolm
I like the subject Isolation from the background. It works well in vibrant colour.
Nigel
Very pleasing tones, patterns, shadows, reflections and colours. The subject is almost incidental to my way of thinking.
Phil C
Beautiful contrasting colours and textures. Good isolation of subject matter from the background.
Philip G
I love the tight framing of the subject to emphasise the height. The shadows in the wet paving add a beautiful sense of balance. Great shot.
Richard B
Very atmospheric. Clever creation of a sense of nostalgia from a modern day scene.
Alex B: Mine
ReplyDeleteAndre H: Lovely textures in the wooden door and the brickwork.
Brian O: Good title. I like the colours, although the left hand side is a bit distracting. A portrait crop perhaps?
Dave C: Excellent tonal range.
David Ro: Striding with a purpose. Nice details.
Dave S: A wonderful image - lovely reflections.
Harry H: Excellent work with the slow shutter speed. Good total range.
Julian P: Quite an atmospheric image, showing the isolation of the castle. The light on the building helps isolate it from the background.
Ken G: Nice work. But why monochrome? Those buses are usually all blinged up and colourful.
Ken L: Great shot. “Bang” on target!
Malcolm R: “L” for Lost, or for “Left in a tree” Nicely seen and composed with a shallow depth-of-field.
Nigel T: Good shot. Good viewpoint.
Phil C: I didn’t realise Rhododendron leaves were rust coloured below. A good study, well separated from the background.
Philip G: Excellent work. You had such wonderful conditions and took full use of them. My favourite for this month.
Richard B: Nice work - good monochrome image.
1. Alex B. A true documentary image of the type sometimes sourced by the local press. How fortunate that there were no other human casualties.
ReplyDelete2. Andre H. The marks of time are indelibly cast here in the gates and wall. Lovely colours.
3. Brian O. I like the choice of vivid colour which adds to enjoyment of the willow artwork. The ’T’ series with crop sensor, abandoned by Leica (owners abandoned, too) has much to offer.
4. Dave C. Like a banded serpent, the decorative paving snakes into the light. Well seen.
5. David Ro. It is the contrasting dress that holds my eye; two figures, two distinctly different dress codes. Use of gloves suggests a cold temperature. Are they a couple exercising individual choice, or two strangers?
6. Dave S. This changing Thames-side scene - wholly man-made and complete with subtle reflections - is comfortably relieved by a cloud-free blue sky. The direction of the incident light reveals that this was a photographer enjoying a morning encounter.
7. Harry H. An atmospheric image. The long shutter speed has added to the tonality - the milky cascade. I wonder if wind or other movement has served to soften the detail in the image overall.
8. Julian P. The viewer’s eye falls at the point of maximum contrast, and here it does it full well on the subject, the castle. Beautiful colours.
9. Ken G. A busy street scene made all the more interesting by inclusion of foreground, middle and background interest - 5 layers combined in 1 frame.
10. Ken L. Beautifully executed, the composition includes sufficient marine information to give context, to set the scene.
11. Malcolm R. There can be no doubt about the subject, the knitted glove. Unique, yet often seen, each one is different; this one hung on a lichen-covered snag. Will it be reunited with its owner?
12. Nigel T. An unusual angle of view. Four manikins and one human; 5 styles of dress captured in a candid image.
13. Phil C. A lovely detail, well seen and recorded. I would not have combined green and orange, but nature knows better.
14. Philip G. Reflected light in the paving does much to complement the atmosphere of a damp evening, as here. Full of interest, this urban scene complete with ‘Shard’ is uniquely 'More London’ on the south bank.
15. My photo.
Alex B: An interesting moment with anticipation. But a static image with presumably more to come. Wherever you are, carrying a camera provides access to the unexpected.
ReplyDeleteAndre H: Textures abound! Amazing this was what it was. I see you just hinted the graffiti. Perhaps more of it would have provided a jolt to the main subject, or less to keep the antique feeling.
Brian O: Thank you so much for showing off so well the willow-weavers art. I wonder what length the longest single shoot had? Great skill. Nice image.
Dave C: I do like the contrasting lighting that you have nailed perfectly, but I hesitate to approve of the sloping verticals across the image. I wonder if you could straighten these and then re-assess which was the most impactful image.
David Ro: Curious and interesting. I think much detail could be recovered in the shadows/subdued light of the two people. On my laptop, I feel I am missing vital clues, which are only recovered when I increase the brightness of my screen.
Dave S: Great colors. A slight tilt to get the reflections and their counterparts vertical and a wider lens could have added to this. Perhaps the Q3 with 28 would have made the shot easier?
Harry H: Great stuff. I guess you needed a tripod to use the 10-stop ND . I am afraid I carry as light a kit as I can and forgo such opportunities. I would have missed this good interpretation.
Julian P: Mine
Ken G: This has worked well with the out of focus heads in the foreground. I do wonder if a moment when the bus was being boarded in addition to random movement might have made more impact. I hope you are enjoying the EV-1.
Ken L: A good moment captured. Very lifelike in colours and feeling.
Malcolm R: Great color through out the image. A very apt title. Nicely found.
Nigel T: Good angle, good subject and a perfect moment for all to fall in place. Very satisfactory.
Phil C: Very satisfying with colour, subject matter and isolation of the subject.
Phillip G: Fascinating. An experience made for monochrome.
Richard B: Such a familiar scene from Cambridge. With so much free advertising, who needs the internet! Thanks for the reminder of my 40 years there.
Alex B - Good bit of local reportage with an added twist in the title and accompanying story - you certainly couldn't park there…
ReplyDeleteAndre H - Pleasingly textured and toned, the more so for knowing that a cathedral is behind the unassuming doors
Brian O - fun, and slightly eery, it’s like a cheerful version of Munch’s “the Scream” - well seen and captured
Dave C - the undulating curved line and strong diagonal shadows pulls us forward as the title says into the light - a strong sense of direction and movement
David Ro - caught perfectly in step and nicely framed to suggest their path ahead, good timing and execution have conjured an interesting image
My picture
Harry H - good combination of the frothing foam at the front and the cascade of the fall convey the vibrancy of the waterfall cocooned in the stark rocks
Julian P - the lit castle is positioned just right on the intersection of the thirds against layers of land, water and sky - an attractive landscape made even more so by excellent composition
Ken G - clever how a mono image evokes a colourful and slightly chaotic scene through the foreground figures, moving passengers and sharp rendition of the adverts on the bus and wall
Ken L - perfectly caught to reveal the design and artistry behind the display, in this case the fireworks forming an almost organic bloom that will disappear a moment later
Malcolm R - an attractive study in colour and texture taken to another level by the title which adds an implied narrative (and echoes the ‘L’ on the glove)
Nigel T - perspective and slanted framing give a pleasingly off-beat feel in which the human and mannequin figures interact intriguingly
Phil C - well executed study, especially interesting with the orange tone predominant in foreground and background to highlight the plant’s unusual colour
Philip G - the variegated lighting in the Shard, its reflections and surrounding buildings add life and variety to an already dramatic view
Richard B - the intense light on the posters is almost like a spotlight picking them out against the dark textured background, theatrical in content and presentation
Alex .B “ you can’t park here mate”
ReplyDeleteWell spotted shot, showing the carnage of crash scene.
Andre.H “he cathedral in Bratislava”
I love the different textures and tones in this image.
Brian .O “ Willow weaving”
Interesting Image, I can see why you took it.
The Wicker man comes to mind.
Dave.C “into the light”
You have captured perfectly the light illuminating the edge stones which snake through the image.
David.Ro “Busy couple”
Nicely captured but Just a little bit of Separation between the couple for me.
Dave. S “Battersea Power Station”
Lovely capture.
Julian.P “Castle Craig”
Nicely exposed image.
Ken.G
Great place to visit and photograph, nice shot.
Ken.L “Starburst”
Wow, Spectacular capture of a firework display.
Malcolm.R “Lost”
Lost then found I hope, lovely colour contrast of pike and green, well spotted.
Nigel.T “Fashion Gallery”
Unusual shot, nice angle well framed.
Phil.C “ Rhododendron”
The green and yellow contrasting colours of the plant leaves, makes this image work.
Phillip.G “ strolling by the Shard”
Nice capture of this London Landmark.
Richard.B “ On the face of it”
Your Catchy title say’s it all, Creative shot of random flyers grouped together.
Alex B
ReplyDeleteA tighter crop would have strengthened this dramatic image.
Andre H
I do like shots of doors, this is a most interesting pair of doors which look as though they have seen much history.
Brian O
A very “spooky” pair of eyes set within a willow frame.
Dave C
An interesting wavy path in an urban setting - the shadows enhances the scene.
David Ro
There is a lot of space in this image - perhaps a tighter crop would add to the impact.
Dave S
A most striking image of Battersea Power Station - enhanced by the reflection.
Harry H
An interesting image of the waterfall enhanced by the ND filter and long exposure giving movement to the water.
Julian P
An atmospheric land and seascape - the lighting enhances the image.
Ken G
A well recorded busy bus station scene which works well in B & W.
Ken L
A lovely and well captured shot of fireworks.
Malcolm R
A fun well observed image of a missing glove.
Nigel T
Mine.
Phil C
A well captured image of leaves - the framing feels a little off centre.
Phil G
A nice shot of the Shard in context with its surrounding enhanced by the wet weather.
Richard B
An interesting collection of posters although the 2 half posters on the left of frame are distracting.
