I felt than a interior of this remarkable station was worth including. The Italians do make a fine station .

This is the Red Barons Triplane that flew out of Stow Maries Aerodrome. There are two actually both airworthy. The pilot gave us a close-up walk round the plane - I have some interesting close-ups.. Interestingly the wings are cantilever’s, so not supported by the struts. In Germany the plane is still on the Luftwaffe register!

  1. ALEX B : PONTOON ALLEY. I believe this is a difficult subject, and ypu did well to get what you did.

    Mine

BRIAN O : RED BARON. Technically very good, but a shame about the man in yellow and orange.

DAVE C : SE5a DETAIL. Good selection of the fuselage\

DAVID R: SATURDAY NIGHT SCENE Well imagined and well executed.

DAVE S : CYCLISTS Very well done and quite iodiosyncratic

HARRY H: CAVENINSISH LABORATORY: Great use of colour and the leaves add to the effect.

JULIAN P: TRAIN WINDOW VIEW: Splendid use of opportunity and fine use if storm conditions.

KEN G: What a fine collection of masks!

MALCOLM R : RIVERSIDE REFLECTIONS What afine piece of observation!

NIGEL T : GORMLEY STATUE Excellent composure and a great background!

PHIL C: GARAGE IN BATH : Well found! And of course nicely horrid.

RICHARD B ON THE PLAINS This is a great find, and superbly composed

  2. 1. Alex B. A beautiful toned image, full of movement and atmosphere. Impressive on a slow shutter.

    2. Andre H. The road to nowhere, plenty of depth, line and geometry. The shadows add an extra element. If only the lone figure had been bathed in light, too.

    3. Brian O. Both fighter plane and worker are highly visible, easy to spot in their respective bright colours. They are separated by more than a century.
Perhaps Baron Manfred would have fared better had camouflage been applied.

    4. Dave C. I enjoy the detail in the engineering, the wear and tear, every blemish recorded in that fine Leica kit

    5. David R. Perhaps many of us associate the colour red with London’s Soho, at least historically. There is a suggestion of heady nights, intoxication, but is that what the photographer had in mind?

    6. Dave S. A lovely mellow light pervades an attractive scene full of rhythm, pattern and history. Beautiful tones. For me it works equally well when divorced from the waterway.

    7. Harry H. The colourful architecture is softened by nature - the golden tree canopy - that caps the scene. Surprisingly little movement, given the slow shutter speed.
Would perspective correction bring something more, or less the impact?

    8. Julian P. That’s an exciting sky, seemingly raging overhead, plenty of movement even at 1:500! But it’s the rainbow that complete the scene, scything through the landscape.

    9. Ken G. My guess is that we are being treated to a Venetian stall and vendor, my eye searches for clues; the proud smallholder holds my eye. Vignettes are a matter of taste, could possibly be added to advantage here.

    10. Malcolm R. Well seen in favourable light, adding essential contrast, almost semi-abstract. A timeless image, stripped of place.

    11. Nigel T. A striking, high contrast interpretation of the (now) familiar Gormley statues. Open to viewer interpretation, the relationship of industry and the solitary, man-made figure, resembling a cut-out, is fascinating.

    12. Phil C. The unloved - urban dereliction and decay - and graffiti are good ‘bedfellows’. There is humour here, but also the germ of an idea for an on-going project.

    13. My photo.

  3. Alex B,
    Interesting evening shot, well toned.

    Andre H,
An interesting subject, if a little busy.

    Brian O,
A good record shot, but spoiled by distractions.

    Dave C,
    Mine

    David R,
    A well done creative image.

    Dave S,
    A very good layered image.

    Harry H,
A great scene may be better simplified, maybe portrait format on the colour part of the image on the left-hand side.

    Julian P,
Atmospheric image, well taken through a train window.

    Ken G,
Good black-and-white, but a bit busy.

    Malcolm R,
    Well seen image.

    Nigel T,
Striking graphic image, maybe take a little from the right.

    Phil C,
Striking image, maybe a heavy crop for Impact.

    Richard B,
    Strong, simple composition.

An interesting street shot, the slight blurring and an almost Tri X feel to the image adds to the immediacy.

    Andre H
A study in lines and shadows - although overall the image is a little confused with so many separate elements.

    Brian O
A good study of a fascinating plane, the figure in orange hi-vis is intrusive.

    Dave C
I do like the B & W treatment which enhances the detail in the fuselage.

    Dave R
A vibrant and lively treatment of a Soho evening.

    David S
A most pleasing image enhanced by the appearance of well spaced cyclists.

    Harry H
An interesting building which may be enhanced by a tighter crop to focus the viewer on colourful banners.

    Julian P
A most striking image of stormy weather conditions with a well defined rainbow captured through the train window.

    Ken G
A fascinating collection of masks - I suspect the image would be more impactful if in colour.

    Malcolm R
A wonderful reflection well captured - could the riverbank be slightly brighter?

    Phil C
An excellent record of amusing street art - a slightly tighter crop or wait for a passing person?

    Richard B
I do like this image, excellent composition with muted tones enhance the feeling of loneliness in the vastness of the Plains.

Andre H: An almost empty station. Excellent. I like the way the shadows on the platform match (almost) the rail sleepers.

Brian O: An excellent image, although I think the fellow in the dayglo got in the way.

    Dave C: Lovely detail.

David R: I know the feeling - after a late night in London. Nicely abstract.

Dave S: Excellent. All traveling the same way, and evenly spaced. How did you manage that?

Harry H: A colourful building. Nice architectural image.

Julian P: Quite a dramatic sky. Like the rainbow.

Ken G: Masks! An interesting photo, with plenty of detail. Nicely done in black & white - I think colour would be too much. Is the storekeeper wearing a Groucho Marx mask?

Malcolm R: Lovely reflections. I like the way the ripples break the reflection up a bit.

Nigel T: Excellent work. It seems to be monochrome, but there is some colour (from the sun?) on the sand near the sculpture.

Phil C: I like it. I wonder who painted it.

    Richard B: Wonderful photo.

  6. Alex B - evocative image, with toning, digital grain and hint of motion blur combining to engage us with the geisha and the mysterious figure behind - following? - her

Andre H - well seen, a myriad of lines in the station roof, rails, posts and shadows turning the ordinary into an fine geometric patten

Brian O - interesting and historic plane well represented, the foreground figure subtly giving us a sense of scale and context…

Dave C - …while closer crop for this vintage warplane reveals its age and purpose by an almost tactile mono rendering of its materials and manufacture

David R - whirling reds around the central figures take us to the heart of an exciting night - with the unblurred letters of “Bar Soho” a clever counterpoint

    My picture

Harry H - strong elements - building, coloured banners and foreground foliage - make an attractive scene from an architecturally plan site

Julian P - three layers, the moving clouds apparently bearing down over the static ground, backdrop the spearing rainbow to turn this passing opportunity into a great photo

Ken G - fascinating collage of faces, the actual human one somehow as unusual as many of the masks, his central framing and eye contact adding impact and emphasis

Malcolm R - from a distance this could depict a hillside and the sky rather than bank and river, an engaging and well made trompe-l'œil

Nigel T - the lighting treatment - silhouette against powerful mono tones - powerfully enhances the solitary reflection that this statue evokes

Phil C - the surrounding foliage and off white building help create the sense of the funky purple face emerging from the garage

Richard B - excellent in composition and tonal treatment, aesthetically pleasing and suggesting implied narratives of desertion and decay

  7. Harry H.

1.Alex B. :- Poncho Alley or Got my Geisha.

Lovely Tones, The slow shutter speed give’s a sense of movement.

    2.Andre H. :- No Title.

The visual horizontal/vertical lines, makes an interesting image.

    3.Brian O. :- No Title.

Nice shot of a plane from a by-gone age, though the guy in the orange overals is a big distraction.

    4.Dave C. :- SE5a Detail.

Great deal of detail in this image, which works very well in monochrome.

    5.David R. :- Saturday Night Scene.

    Nice abstract shot.

    6.Dave S. :- Cyclists.

Nice Rhythm to this image, maybe loose bit of the top and bottom, to show photo in a letterbox format.

    7.Mine.

    8.Julian P. :- no Title

Nice rainbow and a Very dramatic image.

    9.Ken G. :- No Title.

Nice display of Mask’s, my preference would be, to crop the bottom of the image up to the start of the counter/desk.

    10.Malcolm R. :- Riverbank Reflections.

Great Image, I wonder if Monochrome would work better.

    11.Nigel T. :- Gormley Statue.

The statue, makes a lovely Silhouette on the beach.

    12.Phil C. :- Garage in Bath.

The face on the garage looks like it could have come straight out of a horror magazine like Tales from the Crypt, well spotted very spooky.

    13.Richard B. :- On the Plains.

Looks a desolate place, love the colours tones.

  8. 1. Alex B. Deep shadows and bright lights make this a difficult exposure but the lady is nicely illuminated as she hurries along the street. The carrier bag is an unexpected addition to the traditional costume.

    2. Andre H. A spectacular building, clean, light and strangely deserted apart from the lone figure. Amongst all those straight lines that single long sinuous shadow along the platform stands out.

    3. Brian O. Shutter speed not fast enough to show much of the propeller (note for next time). The background planes are unavoidable in situations like this but the guy in the orange overalls is distracting and comically at odds with the period red plane.

    4. Dave C. Another WW1 aircraft strongly lit and finely detailed in B&W, a stark contrast with Brian’s contribution it somehow looks a much more brutal machine.

    5. David R. Very colourful and chaotic, was it by any chance taken through the bottom of a bottle?

    6. Dave S. What extraordinarily regular spacing of the cyclists, they are isolated by that high wall from the town beyond that breaks up the continuity of those successive horizontal layers.

    7. Harry H. The rainbow colours of the shutters/screens liven up the black walls of the building and the leaves relieve the forbidding nature of the facade. I do wonder about the framing though and the inclusion of the white down pipe.

    8. Julian P. A simple and yet dramatic landscape - one for the Weather Watchers.

    9. Ken G. The B&W treatment works well almost merging the stall holder with his wares, the resemblance to Grouch Marks is uncanny.

    10. Me.

    11. Nigel T. The silhouetted statue against the bright sea is quietly contemplative and contrasts with the softer light of the distant industry of the cranes.

    12. Phil C. Hideous but at the same time oddly appealing, this type of work is popping up everywhere. Is there a name for this school of art?

    13. Richard B. A strong sense of abandonment and time moving on, who were the people and where did they go?

  9. Alex B: I do not find the main subject close enough to best explore the image.

Andre H: What a breath of fresh air. I think Scottish rail stations are living in the Dark Ages. Thank you.

Brian O: It hardly looks a fighting machine! Thank you for such an interesting subject to study.

Dave C: Coincidence of two military aircraft in one folio. Seeing both together makes me appreciate your composition but makes me regret the lack of colour.

David R: Very effective. Great idea with your title and a very pleasing magical outcome. Great stuff.

Dave S: Lovely colour and a discovery of perfect timing. Everyone has their own space. Slightly uncanny that the separations are so constant.

Harry H: I am old fashioned and feels the urge to correct verticals and unnatural sloping surfaces. As a lad I used to supervise Physics students in the Cavendish Laboratory so I knew well the original building. I have not seen Eddington but a Google Search shows how modern it is and this building would fit in well.

    Julian P: Mine

Ken G: Utterly fascinating. The final piece of the jigsaw is the “Venetian” mask the guy is holding. Give us more. I would have enjoyed being there.

Malcolm R: Only the title made the first glance see that this was more than a sky image. Very peaceful.

Nigel T: I guess by now one has seen a number of shots of the statues. This one strikes me only in how sharp some of the surfaces must be. I had anticipated rounder contours.

Phil C: I thought Bath was so genteel. Surely neighbourhood groups would have complained to anyone who would listen! Well done Phil. I like the whole image.

Richard B: I enjoy this, but would have liked more on the why and here of the image. Part of a “reconstruction perhaps” or an Open Air Museum, a feature of a locality, or just a juxtaposition in the middle of nowhere. Every picture tells a story, but my imagination is lacking.

  10. Hello Julian. It's simply juxtaposition, as found, abandoned in the middle of the prairie. Richard.
