Andre H
I still find it fun to work with small groups, and for a Ladies’ Day gathering at Waterloo, there are lots of models who are keen to stand in friendship groups. I always enjoyed photographing weddings too.

  1. ARTHUR H ---_ Kowloon image – fine scenario but the masked ladt make this more curious

DAVE C --- Strong shadow with textured road and pavement create a strong image.

DAVE S ---Exquisite quality and thanks for the explanation .

CEOFF C --- Tokyo - Terricic textures and great shapes.

JULIAN P --- This is a fine landscape of a staggering location – I guess it is not heavily touristed, unlike Iceland. Both the rocky foreground and the wide open background are fascinating.

KEN G – Equadorian Tanager ___ I will look out some of my images from Eq, but none are as glorious as this.

MALCOM R---This is a gentle and charming image, which I have a great regard for.

NIGEL T--- Carrickfergus Harbour. Wonderfull textures and shabby wood – better to look at than ride in it, I guess!

PHIL C—So much shape and texture! I think it aches for the colours which must have been there.

RICHARD B--- Colorado. Shapes and fall of rain makes for a fascination image,

TOM L--- Horse and rider share their commitment in this striking image.

  2. 1. Andre H. There is a sense of shared enjoyment in the subjects in this photo; a rapport with the photographer. The photo has 2 halves, the top half being more than a little busy visually, the bottom offering calm, helping to isolate the figures.

    2. Arthur H. Many would suggest this is urban landscape as opposed to what is now popularly called, 'street’. But titles should not matter. I like this very much; a candid photo of 2 people making their way in life, set against an uncluttered backcloth of rectilinear line and form.

    3. Dave C. Images distilled to very few elements, compositionally, often hit the right chord with me. This is a case in point - I like it. The highlight entering the frame (top left) is a slight distraction, easily addressed in “post’.

    4. Dave S. A strikingly different subject, an enigma, stripped of context. I wonder how I would have interpreted the scene had I not first been offered the written explanation.

    5. Geoff C. A monochrome study embracing tone, line & texture. My eye wanders in an effort search out more in the shadows.

    6. Julian P. Beautifully seen and recorded. Perfectly exposed in the moment, the light striking the foreground rock, and presented against the inspiring ‘snow-capped ‘walls’ of the fjord. There could be more, I wonder what delight could be found in ‘close-ups’, more intimate, abstract landscapes of those colourful weathered rocks.

    7. Ken G. I think it’s true to say that studies of birds are not common in this forum. Lovely to see this image, an exotic species in brilliant golden tropical plumage. The bird is alert and beautifully recorded.

    8. Malcolm R. This image appears to show one of those ephemeral moments when special sunlight light filters through a cloud-ridden, stormy sky. The grass tells the story, but has there been rain, will there be rain? The absence of pedestrians may suggest inclement weather.

    9. Nigel T. The joy of beauty in decay. I like the semi-abstract feel of the image. Is there also a place for a colourful abstract that makes no reference to a boat, a different photo, of course?

    10. Phil C. An interesting as-found subject. There is no water yet the withered roots (?) imply an aggressive environment. Is this what the alert beach-comber sees, or the perceptive eye of the photographer? I like the contrast of wood and pebbles, but am left wanting sharper detail in the lines of the wood.

    11. My photo.

    12. Tom L. A challenging action shot that delivers in every respect. The image gives insight into the world of the jockey, the sheer determination of the rider, the vulnerability that comes with speed of the jump. The picture is the work of a photographer who is in complete control.

  3. Andre H: A good trio. Full of life and this is well caught. I am amused that one lady is carrying her high-heeled shoes. I wonder if she will just throw away her current shoes before she makes her “appearance”.

Arthur H: What a great moment to take an image like this. I will not ask about how much the two figures were manipulated in post-processing to give the contrast, as I am just so pleased with the result.

Dave C: I guess this is a full frame 28mm image. It has that look. The three elements of the image are well positioned. I feel it had to be a black and white image for its success.

Dave S: I must go to London more often!! Well done. I have never seen anything like it. For pure entertainment this image is tops!

Geoff C: Dynamic in contrast. I like the composition and note the off vertical nature of a number of the columns. I hope not too much depends on them.

    Julian P: Mine

Ken G: A very good “trophy” to come home with. A stunning bird in its surroundings. I am curious as to why the bird’s legs are so far apart.

Malcolm R: Nice mood and a gentle flow to the path. It is good to get to know in all weathers scenery close to home.

Nigel T: Who could refuse such a subject for a picture? If I had been there I think I would have “zoomed in” a bit more towards the top left. Then less blue overall. But each to his taste, and all have fun.

Phil C: Do I imagine a large butterfly within the shape of the rope? I do appreciate the dynamic range and “earthiness” of the image.

Richard B: Just so. A reminder that not all vacations coincide with good weather.

Tom L: A suspended moment, without the dash that must have been present. Frozen in time. I like the concentration in the rider (and presumably the horse too). Has this horse had to travel from New Zealand to participate? If so it must have needed a good cargo plane as I guess seasick horses are not good winners!

  4. Andre H - engaged trio well captured against a layered background, the colours of the station signage complementing the dress of the third lady

Arthur H - striking and atmospheric composition perfectly caught - the second, shadowy figure adds an additional dimension, unworldly and slightly sinister

Dave C - strong composition, the tonal range, contrast and texture executed just right to conjure an interesting image from the everyday

    Mine

Geoff C - the distribution of the columns and the deep shadows over the squared floor convey a sense of age and evokes the grandeur of the temple beyond the entrance

Julian P - striking landscape, the composition and lighting picking out the lighter rock which adds aesthetic and geological value to an already impressive scene

Ken G - spot on capture of a fascinating bird, a study in yellow, green and black with the posture of the creature appearing to look directly into the eye of the viewer

Malcolm R - with the gently curving park meandering towards misty trees and clouds, a study in tranquility and simplicity

Nigel T - fading, once bold colours, a pattern somewhat offset over the wood planks and strong textures combine to convey the ageing of the craft and its need for TLC

Phil C - the roots have a dynamic almost menacing quality enhanced by the mono treatment and the textual contrast with the pebbles - well seen

Richard B - fascinating and subtle image, a visually attractive background in palette and composition, with the rainy window and bar somehow suggesting an unknown narrative

Tom L - classic image making the most of a classy lens, elevated further by capturing how both rider and horse are focusing on the same point. Excellent technique needed to reveal that.

  6. 1. Andre H. Three ladies of descending heights all set to enjoy themselves, the shorter one with shoulder bag and spare pair of shoes is best equipped for whatever the day may bring. A happy little group photo but the colourful background of the station is intrusive .

    2. Arthur H. Very effective light and shadow combination. The woman seems to be stepping out rather hurriedly giving the shadowy figure behind her sinister connotations. Cropping the highlight detail on the right hand edge reduces the composition to the essentials.

    3. Dave C. Super shot. The wide angle lens exaggerates the perspective giving a great feeling of depth and the circles of the white cycle wheels top right balance the black circular shadow of the sign bottom left.

    4. Dave S. What a curious, almost surreal and almost symmetrical photo. According to Google it was a one day event to mark 100 days to the opening of the Paris Olympics. A reminder to me to clean the fish tank!

    5. Geoff C. Strong side-lighting brings out the textures in the floor and pillars. Despite the highly diluted developer the contrast remains very high (or maybe that is due to the scanning process?), toning down the bright right hand pillar or cropping it restores the tonal balance.

    6. Julian P. It is the light on the foreground rocks against the hazy shadows of the cliffs that make this picture. Bleak unspoiled country.

    7. Ken G. Beautifully captured shot of the bird and its branch, the vivid colours work well against the darker muted background.

    8. Me.

    9. Nigel T. A fine abstract in red white and blue with textures thrown in for good measure. The sanded wood and fibreglass suggest that repairs are underway.

    10. Phil C. A lovely low level aerial shot, the tortured shapes of the roots contrast beautifully with the smooth rounded pebbles and sharp pine needles. Superb B&W image.

    11. Richard B. Raindrops on windows certainly suggest a storm but more definition in the landscape /cityscape beyond would give a better impression of the conditions and the location.
Given the rain the little white duck is appropriate.

    12. Tom L. A moment of the action caught so well that the flying horse and its rider almost seem pasted onto the sky. Wonderful expression on the rider’s face - determination or fear?
