April 2024

Andre H
A while ago I was asked to do two sets of pictures, of which one was Waterloo concourse on Ladies day. Not all were so frame filling but doing this with a 90mm was fun!

  1. Andre H really well filled frame. I think it’s the perfect portrait lense.

Dave C clever composition with the crossing figures balancing the poster image well.

Dave S intriguing and well layered shot.

    Elaine J delightful colour saturation

    Geoff C well wrought shadows

Julian P stunning sky and great sense of the freeing power of a sunny day by the water

    Ken G mine

    Malcolm R superbly saturated image

Phil C like the blue saturation but maybe needs a more interesting angle or composition

Richard B my winner this month as the clever mirrored composition and way the key elements are placed in the frame make this a good shot

Tom L runner up. A crisp portrait with good contrast

    Ken G

  2. Andre H - well caught, especially nailing focus in such a busy environment which could otherwise undermine the benefit of the 90

Dave C - interesting contrast of the dreaming picture on the wall and cloudy skies vs the blokes striding forward, eyes down

    Mine

Elaine J - luminous greens frame the blues, greys and gold of the building to convey history in nature, perhaps the essence of Buxton mentioned in the title

Geoff C - a picture as much about the shade at the the January sunshine, the shadow of the lamp creating a new structure at the centre of the frame

Julian P - a lot to enjoy, the complementary shapes top left and bottom right create a swirling composition that adds drama to a tranquil scene

Ken G - the subject, her posture/expression and background combine to give a strong sense of personality in the context

Malcolm R - the dominant greens and semi-shadowed placement of the boats in the frame emphasise the privacy in the title, almost hidden in nature

Phil C - the industrial background in its duller blue grey helps emphasise the car as an attractive and powerful object

Richard B - super, everything about this from seeing and composition through to technical execution is excellent…and the title too…

Tom L - great portrait, dog and man looking intently in opposite directions, framing, focus, exposure spot on and tone/tint adding sense of an illustration

  3. Dave C: Great backlighting and fine pictures behind the workers.

Dave S: This is a gloomy environment, with a single man

Elaine J: Punchy colours: I became fond of Buxton when I was providing consultancy
to the College and Derby University’s campus.

Geoff C: Very nice use of strong sun and carefully located shadows

Julian P; great lighting and lots of fine textures.

Ken G: The artist is excellent (both style and pose): and a fascinating background.

Malcolm R: Great light and lots to look at: reflections are very attractive.

Phil C: The car is a real beauty, and the background is classic factory!

Richard B: Super!! Shapes and reflctions are a joy

Tom L: Two fine portraits with a soft backround.

Strong monochrome, but a bit busy.

    Elaine J
    Well seen and framed image.

    Geoff C
    Excellent composition, good monochrome work.

    Julian P
    Pleasing Harbour scene.

    Ken G
    Spontaneous moment well caught.

    Malcolm R
    Nice dream like image.

    Phil C
Nice car shame about the air conditioning units.

    Richard B
    Very good composition, very symmetrical.

    Tom L
Great juxtaposition of the two elements in the frame.

  5. April 2024

Choosing 1,2,3 this month is going to be difficult. This seems to me the most exciting set I have seen.

Andre H: Stunning with perfect separation between subject and background. One could not do better.

Dave C: That is a classic image. It all came right for you.

Dave S; This was worth the wait for the right person in the right place. Without the Man it would have been dull.

Elaine J: I have trouble with over-bright colours when I use my Lumix cameras. I turn down the saturation and vibrancy. I would feel happier with your shot if it was more muted.

Geoff C: You escape for sunshine?! A good simple image that is always attractive and worthwhile.

    Julian P: mine

Ken G: An image that poses so many questions. What lay behind the lady (a military vehicle taken over by pacifists?) and what was she doing. I would enjoy this more if I knew the pre-story.

Malcolm R: A very popular subject, which you have pulled off very well.

Phil C: Just two colours. Great. Both very complimentary. Soothing despite the power……..

Richard B: Tell us more. Brilliant.

    Tom L: Impeccable.

    1. In answer to Julian's request, "Tell us more". The photo was carefully timed to ensure still water, and a reflection at the Science Museum, Valencia. The striding figure was sheer luck! Richard.

  6. 1. Andre H. I’m guessing this is a candid portrait given the busy background. The selective focus helps in isolating the subject, yet the strong blue and yellow tones are a distraction.

    2. Dave C. Timing and juxtaposition in street photography can create interest, as here. I think a single pedestrian may have benefitted the composition, and could arguably have been found with time, working the scene.

    3. Dave S. I like very much the sense of confinement in a web of man-made structures, expressed well in light, shade and texture. Are nightmares made of this? The man is essential to the story.

    4. Elaine J. The choice of saturated colour, especially evident in the grass, gives this picture a painterly quality. The framing by trees is effective.

    5. Geoff C. On the face of it, this monochrome image is a study of the stonework in a period window. But there is more, the shadow of the lantern is well seen and creates a synergy with the window canopy.

    6. Julian P. A quiet harbour scene made all the more interesting by the boats. I wonder if the red tones are a little too vibrant, creating an imbalance. The reflection of the sky in the water is lovely, offering visual relief from the highlights at the top of the frame.

    7. Ken G. An environmental portrait with the street artist playing to the camera. The composition is overly busy to my mind, the ‘model’ with her can of paint alone would have held interest in isolation from the mural.

    8. Malcolm R. Beautiful light, perhaps fleeting, and beautiful colours. A lovely, intimate study of a watery scene.

    9. Phil C. The car is unquestionably the subject in this photo. I find myself searching for the photographer in the polished, nearside headlight. The crop feels tight, more space being needed front and rear to my eye.

    10. My photo.

    11. Tom L. A striking portrait of a dog and man at rest. The processing is interesting with an HDR feel. I wonder if it might benefit from an alternative treatment in post.

  7. 1. Andre H. Nicely captured candid portrait especially with a 90mm. The background is rather distracting but that may have been part of the brief. The plastic cup is unexpected but its white lid echoes the confectionary on her head.

    2. Dave C. Shot precisely the moment before the foremost pedestrian obliterates the portrait on the wall. Strong shadows fill the otherwise empty foreground. Three of the four faces are bespectacled giving them a kind of unity.

    3. Dave S. Angles everywhere, the man in his tiny window seems overwhelmed by his nightmare environment. Dramatically claustrophobic .

    4. Elaine J. The already intense colours are enhanced by the silhouetted trees. Greater depth of field is needed to sharpen up the stone coat of arms - an important part of the picture.

    5. Geoff C. The classic lamp and shadow image, timed to throw the shadow onto the blank wall but clear of the window.

    6. Julian P. The harbour wall with its cobbles and weeds together with the two fishing boats suggest a small but still active fishing port - but is that an oil rig on the far right? Reflections of the sky are broken up by the movement of the water.

    7. Ken G. Very colourful (except for the “artist”).

    8. Me.

    9. Phil C. Very smart against the grey background, if it were mine I would be very worried about potholes.

    10. Richard B. A beautifully simple image pared down to the essentials in both tones and shapes. The figure gives some idea of the scale of the mysterious architecture and the reflection doubles the sense of space. Fascinating and restful.

    11. Tom L. The square format works splendidly here. The dog concentrates on its master whose attention is elsewhere, nice candid picture.
