Leica SL2 & Canon 50mm f1.4 lens (1950’s vintage). I have a passion for vintage glass and recently added the Canon to my collection, the lens pre-dates the Summilux by a few years. This was a test shot at minimum focus distance and wide open.

1) Andre H. A brooding scene, the sun just breaking on the upper slopes of the volcano. The trees in the foreground, almost in silhouette, add interest.
ReplyDelete2) Chris S. A good example of what can be achieved - close-ups - with a powerful zoom in a compact digital camera.
3) Dennis A. There is much to hold the eye in this documentary photo. The boy is intent, mindful of the photographer; what do his eyes say? I have to wonder if it would be more striking in monochrome.
4) Elaine J. A lovely landscape in shades of blue. I like the way in which the the overhead sunlight plays on the timbers of the old jetty.
5) Geoff C. A study of yeast; not quite conventional still life in its composition or framing. It is certainly an unusual subject, and why not? Let’s go explore, Huawei P20 in hand.
6) Julian P. This photo of Ormond Hill prompted me to brush up on my Scottish geography. There is history here, and the light is special. Is the shadow of the photographer creeping into the foreground, perhaps unintended?
7) Malcolm R. A colourful action shot; good to see a return of group, outdoor events after the various CV-19 restrictions. The elevated view-point has enabled separation of some riders and added depth.
8) Nigel. A beautiful minimalist, close-up of entwined blooms - beautifully composed. It is rich, full of colour, and use of a fast aperture has rendered the background smoothly out of focus.
9) Phil C. What treasures hide within this antique shop. Surely we can’t help but be tempted by the wall display - the chairs, a skeleton, a gargoyle or is it a character from Star Wars? Who could resist?
10) My photo.
11) Tom L. An impressive landscape; a reminder of how there is opportunity to create something individual even in landscapes much frequented by photographers. It is full of mood, mist hanging, obscuring the depths of the valley. I like the foreground detail.
Andre H
ReplyDeleteI like the drama in this image; however, I would have preferred to have the levels lifted and the trees darkened more to add to the drama.
Chris S
The extreme zoom has certainly captured the flower, I would have liked to have seen more detail in the branches and the image slightly brighter.
Denis A
A delightful school room scene which captures the faces of attentive (???) pupils.
Elaine J
I like this image very much, the old pier timbers leads the eye to the hills beyond and there is foreground interest too.
Geoff C
I hope the bread tasted good! It’s an unusual subject, I wish the background was less distracting.
Julian P
A really nice image with interesting light highlighting the flag, I find the sky particularly appealing.
Malcolm R
A good action shot although it would have been good to see a little motion blur.
Phil C,
This is a fun shot which I think would have been strengthened by cropping most of the left hand building off.
Richard B
An interesting black and white image with excellent tonal range and detail.
Tom L
This is a fabulous atmospheric landscape image reminiscent of the work of Ansel Adams.
Andre
ReplyDeleteAn epic landscape, the clouds just merging with the snow capped volcano. The trees in the foreground add some nice depth and scale.
Chris
This really captures the delicate nature of the blooms, perfect for this time of year. I like the dark surrounds against the bright pink flowers.
Dennis
This little chap looks like he want to go and play. Nicely framed and strong focus on the eyes.
Elaine
The blue and green tones give this a relaxing feel with the detail of the wooden frames taking the eye nicely into the frame. Wish I was there now!
Geoff
How was the bread? Looks like you were ready to start baking.
Julian
The perfect light to capture this moment, the flag flying proudly against the sky, very nice indeed.
Malcolm
Looks like a good way to raise some much needed funds.
Nigel
This has an artistic feel, the bloom standing out well against the background, looks like a successful test shot.

I do love a black and white of texture and this one fits the bill, all the wispy strands are lovingly recorded and you feel you could reach out and touch it.
Tom
We started this month with an epic landscape and end with another one. Truly beautiful, the black and white working really well.
Andre H: Famous place from the wanderings of Friedrich Wilhelm Heinrich Alexander von Humbolt (as I learned in my first year course in Physics at Edinburgh University) but this is the first time I have seen what it looks like. Normally called Chimborazo. You have a good brooding picture. No concessions to dramatising the day with HDR or whatever. Realistic.
ReplyDeleteChris S: That is some magnification. I am impressed all this can be done hand-held. Not so happy with the composition which is not helped I feel by the crossing twig/branch.
Dennis A: Sure this is an appealing moment of young innocence and distraction. You did well. A great image to return with from half way round the world.
Elaine J: Simple, pastel yet surprisingly blue. If you are into post-processing I would suggest a change of colour temperature. Thank you for this careful composition.
Geoff C: A man after my own heart. Sourdough breadmaking is part of our small-holder life in the Highlands. Pictures such as this tell a real story and are educational. Keep them coming.
Julian P: Mine
Malcolm R: Again, this is a useful image to archive what has been done to support Ukraine. Photography is more than pretty pictures - it is an informative medium.
Nigel: I do wonder whether I did the right thing to trade in my 1970 Leica lenses for 21st Century versions. I just felt wealthy enough to make the transition, but I cannot say my photography has shown any change that can be attributed to that. Your image makes the point that any quality glass of its day can produce excellent images. I do like your composition.
Phil C: Well worth the capturing. I wonder how long it will last before a new idea uses the space.
Richard B: You have got this spot on. Minimalistic and the full range of tonal densities.
Tom L: Are you sure you have not copied an Ansel Adams? Seriously your black and whites are superlative and you are as much a Master as Ansel Adams.
!. Andre H. A heavy brooding picture with the heavy clouds obscuring the mountain top and flattening the light on the valley, the dark tree silhouettes give a strong base to the image but it does lack “sparkle”.
ReplyDelete2. Chris H. I like the backlighting and strong colour of the petals but would have preferred to see them (or an alternative cluster) in front of rather than behind the dark stem.
3. Dennis A. Divided attention between the pupils but the one nearest the camera is focussed on you and therefore seemingly on us the viewers. Interesting that the times table is in English.
4. Elaine J. This wreck of a jetty is nicely portrayed against the blue of the sea and the hazy background of the mountains. Was it once used in the fishing industry or was it for passenger transport to the mainland and how did it fall into such disrepair?
5. Geoff C. Bubbling away nicely, I hope it doesn’t explode. An interesting take on our daily bread.
6. Julien P. Low sun gives rich colours to this, the flag pole dwarfs the nearby tree and the flag stands proud amidst the clouds.
7. Me.
8. Nigel. The two flower heads are rather tangled and confused but the way their colour is offset against the out of focus background is a bonus.
9. Phil C. Great fun, he looks quite happy sat there basking in the sunshine with his tin hat and companion on the roof.
10. Richard B. This works well in black and white, the fibrous detail of the rope is in strong contrast with the smoothness of the metal ladder and rough stone of the wall, a good abstract study.
11. Tom L. The location looks familiar ( “Clearing Winter Storm”) but the weather conditions are different, there seems to be almost an explosion of light from the centre of the frame across the sky and into the valley, very dramatic.
First pic is mine from Ecuador
ReplyDeleteChris S - Some lovely colour, but a overall very dark
Dennis A - About right for a class of little ones: one looks at the camera, one turns round, one MIGHT be working and one listens to the teacher. I do like this!
Elaine J — Nice sense of recession given by the wreckage of a landing stage
Geoff C - Simple technology is always best!
Julian P - Stormy weather coming? Glorious colours
Malcolm R - Cyclists do wear a variety of colours!
Nigel - And very nicely done too, with a good sense of recession and very good foreground petals
Phil C - Nice lighting on a pleasing but surprising advertisement that asks a number of questions
Ricard B - Old rope always fascinates!
Tom L Very fine moment of climate - I am jealous!
ReplyDeleteAndre H - a good volcanic landscape both tress and cloud sandwiching the volcano. A tad dark though.
Elaine J - well seen but I’m trouble by the tree being too dominant.
Chris S - potentially well lit but the flower is eclipsed by the branch.
Elaine J - a nice seascape with the jetty reading into the image. A slight blue cast possibly from the sky?
Geoff C - interesting idea and a good P20 image.
Julian P - seems to be a nice warm light and the sky is interesting.
Malcolm R - very well shot and it would have been nice to see some movement.
Nigel - has a nice softness as you would expect at full aperture.
Phil C - amusing! and well seen.
Richard B - an interesting mono study of rope and steps, very well rendered.
Tom L - roll over Ansel!
