Old & New Ipswich. Leica QP.
Ipswich docks is undergoing a revival with modern flats adjacent to old warehouses awaiting conversion to living accommodation. The framing of the buildings by the old girder canopy was most appealing.

No diving or jumping, Westgate-on-Sea, the day before the storm - Leica M, 50mm
Tom L
“Commuters” - taken with the M10 and 50mm f0.95 Noctilux.
Alan T. A lovely calming image that captuers the mood very well. Maybe shifting the composition to the right a little would have avoided the dip in the tree line on the left edge and provided a clearer visual stop on the right.
ReplyDeleteAndre H. A good 'character' photograph well seen. Bright sunlight on white always difficult - just a little over exposed.
Chris S. Me (more weird stuff in the pipeline).
Dennis A. An image full of colour but could be a bit darker to enhance the saturation.
Malcolm R. Excellent action grab shot, well seen and composed (could the slight loss of detail in the cap be recovered in Photoshop?).
Nigel. Welcome to the group, Nigel. Very good photograph of an industrial landscape, perfectly exposed with an unusual and interesting angle of view.
Phil C. The day 'before' the storm! A dramatic photograph that captuers the moment and sentiment.
Richard B. I initially struggled with this because it took a while for the penny to drop with the title. I like it and particularly enjoy the interplay of the many angles, a much photographed roof structure captured from a different view point. The more I look at it, the more I enjoy it.
Tom L. There’s something about this photograph - it’s sharp but soft and gentle at the same time, which I find very appealing.
Alan
ReplyDeleteLooks like a peaceful scene, the grey tones give a mellow feeling.
Andre
A nice portrait of the stall holder. I assume he is selling the leather belts, did you buy one?
Chris
Very clever, and really effective. A different take on the subject. Looks like an alien.
Dennis
Great colours make for a lovely photo.
Malcolm
Caught at just the right moment, the zoom on the Panasonic makes a good job of the scene.
Nigel
An effective way of capturing the regeneration of the area. Good use of black and white and lots of details. I like the framing too.

Richard
Nicely spotted. It’s a beautiful roof but the open window just adds a the touch needed to make the frame work, that little piece of darkness.
Tom
The two chaps on the up escalator have spotted you, and it is their similar reaction that makes the shot. The Noctilux is also such lovely lens.
Alan T – Evening Sky
ReplyDeleteI like the image, the tones are so restful, however, I would have preferred to see it in colour!
Andre H – Stall Holder
The chap is certainly wearing an interesting outfit – I wish there was more context to the image showing what he was selling.
Chris S – Abstract orange
Well this is certainly an interesting shot – not certain what it is but I wouldn’t want to meet it on a dark night!
Dennis A – Dawyck Gardens
A most colourful shot, I would have liked to have seen more of the tree, nevertheless I do like the colours
Malcolm R – Spit and polish
I like this “action” shot the dynamic movement of the hand and the reflection work well. I would have preferred a slightly tighter crop to loose the reflection of the person behind the window cleaner.
Phil C – No diving or jumping
A really good moment well captured, the coloured sign certainly adds to the drama of the scene.
Richard B – Open Window
I had to hunt for a few moments to find the open window! This is certainly an interesting image contrasting modern curves and a classical facade .
Tom L – Commuters
This is a very well captured moment on the move and the main subject is sharp no mean feat especially with a Noctilux on an M10. I gave up with my M10 and went for the easier option of an SL2!

Alan T - a pleasant evening shot of the sun going down over the wash. It is a pity that the
centre jour foreground in not more interesting but nevertheless good use of monochrome.
Andre H - an interesting environmental portrait of the market stall holder in traditional dress.
May be a bit of a crop and attention to the highlights would improve this?
Chris S - Abstract Orange eh? whatever it is it is interesting and well achieved.
Malcolm R - well seen, composed and shot. A good example of street photography.
Nigel - welcome, especially if if we are to see intriguing images like this. A nice juxtaposition
which is well set off by the canopy joists.
Phil C - dramatic and well seen.
Richard B - a good architectural shot. which could benefit from increased contrast to
accentuate the open window.
Tom L - very good but I would prefer only one focus of attention, notwithstanding well seen,
framed and shot.
1) Alan T: A tranquil seascape. The monochrome treatment works well, the black silhouette framing the foreground, contrasting markedly with the detail of the sea and sky beyond. Notwithstanding that, I find myself wanting to discover more detail in the foreground. Would it benefit from an edit - lifting the black tones slightly to reveal more?
ReplyDelete2) Andre H. An environmental street portrait, captured in harsh light. A fast aperture would surely have offered better visual separation of the model and background, but not easy to achieve in unforgiving sunshine without using a filter.
3) Chris S. A creative idea. I enjoy still life, but find there is too little detail in the central highlights here to hold my eye. I regret to say it does not quite work for me.
4) Dennis A. A beautiful image of a sculptural tree shedding its russet foliage in profusion. The russets and greens are a perfect match. I do not see how this photo could be improved.
5) Malcolm R. A man at work with clear evidence of his labours. I find myself searching the reflections to discover more of the wider street scene behind him.
6) Nigel. Always interesting to find an image juxtaposing old and new. The unusual viewpoint reinforces the solidity of the structures and, to my mind, leaves an impression of entrapment within.
7) Phil C. The power of water is perfectly expressed here. The colours complement one another; the sign adds a touch of humour in those exceptional conditions,as well as a focal point for the eye.
8) My photo.
9) Tom L. An interesting “street" photo - observer and observed. I was not present, yet I feel I am being watched. The composition and plane of focus work very well.
1. Alan T. A gentle sunset despite the high contrast, surprising that there is no sparkle on the sea. The letterbox format works well but all the “action”, the tree and sunset, is all on the left hand side leaving it unbalanced.
ReplyDelete2. Andre H. An interesting costume and a direct look from your subject. The background stall is somewhat obtrusive but it does put the chap in the market context. That pair of eyes on the extreme left keep drawing my attention.
3. Chris S. The stringy bits of an orange very cleverly photographed to look like some weird sea creature, there are pictures everywhere we just have to find them and use our imagination.
4. Dennis A. Certainly very striking colour here but I find it hard on the eye. It falls between two stools, neither close enough to define the leaves nor far enough away to condense them into a solid mass of colour.
5. Me.
6. Nigel. Welcome Nigel. This worms eye view makes the most of the contrast between the old and the new, the dilapidated and the modern, well suited to black and white.
7. Phil C. Photographing the ordinary in extraordinary circumstances can result in strange, oddball, humorous and sometimes poignant images, here is a classic example beautifully captured.
8. Richard B. That reflection of the lattice work in the glass of the open window is a nice touch. Could the grey tones be boosted I wonder or is it best left as you have chosen to present it?
9. Tom L. Two bearded and bespectacled gents have spotted you capturing them on their human conveyor belt, are they on their way to processing or are they being dispatched at the end of the working day ?
Alan T: A benign image. I am rather surprised it was taken with a 210 mm focal length lens. I guess this is an equivalent focal length but I am surprised so high the value is.
ReplyDeleteAndre H: Very characterful. I guess this is some local costume. Well portrayed and a good reason for exploring the continent.
Chris S: Is this an April Fool? Abstract yes, but I can’t find the orange.
Dennis A: That this is a UK destination is a surprise. But I am impressed and will add this spot to any future traverse of The Borders.
Malcolm R: Intriguing because of the reflection. Not quite as I imagined it would be.
Nigel: That is a very very striking image. Exceptional.
Phil C: There are times when such signs are useful for visitors and there are times when they provide a great excuse for an image. Did you get wet, Phil.
Richard B: Another puzzle image because of its title. I see no open window.
Tom L: Thanks for this Underground image. Good to see a f/0.95 in action. So realistic. I feel I have been there!
Alan T - very nice image, I think the Monochrome conversion and panoramic format is perfect to bring out the best of this scene. Love the silhouetted foreground and the tones in both the sky and sea.
ReplyDeleteAndre H - nice street portrait of what looks to be an interesting character. Particularly like the angle at which he wears his hat and the detail in his belt. If I may, I would suggest either clowning out the part object left frame, or cropping tighter to remove it; you could crop the bottom and left side, providing you leave the ‘dangly’ bit of the belt in tact.
Chris S - don’t know how you’ve done this but it is certainly an interesting pattern shot, which is great in black and white.
Dennis A - wow, such an abundance of colour makes for a great image. That SL2 body and the 24-90 Vario is such a great combination.
Malcolm R - nice street capture, well seen and executed.
Nigel - what a fabulous image. Love the unusual angle of view and incredible detail in the buildings. The monochrome conversion works well, particularly with that interesting sky and you have captured such a great array of tones.
Phil C - wouldn’t have liked to be around on the day you captured this. Freezing the water works well and the red “No Diving” sign gives a good focal point.
Richard B - a superb image of patterns. The composition is great and I think you have nailed the exposure which I imagine would have been a challenge.
Alan T - Very calm but perhaps needed more detail in the bottom area of trees and foliage.
ReplyDeleteStall holder - mine
Chris B - lovely fliigree in this. . but no orange?
Dennis A - Lack of contrast can be a problem but I find this pretty absorbing.
Malcolm R - Well done - a picture from nothing, with intriguing reflections.
Nigek - The girder framework is great, especially with old and new buildings.
Phil C - Not many photographers would get this close. . and with a 50!
Richard B - Good to see a different angle on a much photographed subject
Tom L - As ever, the expressions on the two faces make for a good picture.
