”The Corner Shop” is the result of a wander around town looking for inspiration in lockdown (it is surprising how often wheelie bins appear in my pics), the Panasonic TZ60 again.

Just Looking What's On - Honest - Background taken with the M10 and 35mm Summicron in Seville, Spain; cheetah taken with Nikon D810 and 600mm f4.0 lens (sorry) at Simbambili in South Africa. You’re probably guessed I’m bored with lockdown and have been playing around with Photoshop.

  1. 1) Andre H. A forbidding scene. It must surely have been exhilarating to be exposed to the elements on the mountain in that weather. I like the light falling on the water, but find the shadows in the foreground a little too dark.

    2) Chris S. A delicate image taking on the appearance of a painting. Your choice of a contrasting, dark background works well. I wonder how you have processed the photo to create it.

    3) Dennis A. Lovely colours that create the atmospheric, tonal recession. The distant snow-capped mountains appear almost to float as clouds, separated from the landscape below.

    4) Elaine J. A lovely moment. A reminder of the strong bond that exists between caring dog owners and their pets. I think only you and the lady shared the moment; the man is distracted, his gaze is elsewhere.

    5) Geoff C. An atmospheric winter scene with fresh snow. The picture would be stronger if it had foreground interest in that open patch of snow. The snow has a blue hue. It could easily be corrected to white in post-processing, if preferred.

    6) Julian P. The path guides the eye to a lovely woodland scene, enchanted with subtle colour. Woodland scenes can be so challenging, yet this one is successful. It has a rare, magical, fairytale-like quality.

    7) Keith W. Keith, I think your photo, born out of our pandemic, will take on an historical significance with time. The interest is at, and below the horizon down to, and including the beach. I think it would be stronger in a panoramic format created by cropping the sky to just below the cloud line.

    8) Malcolm R. We are reminded that “imagination is more important than knowledge”! The randomly placed wheelie bins, regaled in bright red, rule the scene as so often they do in urban areas on collection day. Our functional world on display - very much of our time.

    9) Phil C. The panning technique is well executed. I like the muted colours in the background that set off the contrasting, saturated colour of the speeding car.

    10) My photo.

    11) Tom L. You surely had fun with this composite, Tom. It is intentionally incongruous, full of interest, and works very well. A stretch of the imagination might lead to thoughts of how our increasingly overcrowded planet is pushing wild animals into encroaching urban environments to scavenge for food. Foxes, bears…….what next, wild cats?

Andre H - good moody landscape with brooding sky but lacks a little detail in the middle ground.

Chris S - not sure if paper/card is intentional but a pleasing image.

    Elaine J - well seen!

Geoff C - nice high viewpoint and pleasing shot.

Julian P - path leads in to the image but stops at a point where there is lack of interest.

Keith W - it is a pity that the swimmers are partially obscured by the black but well seen.

Malcolm R - good use of colour.

Phil C - lacks real impression of speed but well shot.

Richard B - nice shot and with a bit more contrast…….

    Tom L - clever!

  3. Andre H: I like images that are nearly monochromatic but not quite. This falls into that category. Some slightly more contrast in the post-scan stage might have given the image a lift.

Chris S: A prime candidate for pictures that look like paintings. Very subtle. Successful.

Dennis A: Very pastel. A good view. I have no idea what is the scale of the distant mountains. I can see the attraction of this desert.

Elaine J: Well done. Just wish the gentleman was more involved with the dog. A good smile.

Geoff C: Pity you did not wait for the sun, unless you wanted to portray the less exciting aspect of snow.

    Julian P: Mine

Keith W: Good to have a contemporary image. Where were you? I wonder when to cruise ships will find somewhere to go.

Malcolm R: Bravo for the colour here. Very striking. Every reason to attempt a picture here.

Phil C: I have seen many look-alikes to this, and this image is certainly above average.

Richard B: I love it. The leaning pole etc. The feeling of the scene is great, but please let us know where you were. USA?

Tom L: Thank you for raising my spirits with this nonsense. We all need humour.

  4. 1 Andre H. Dark, brooding, mysterious and forbidding - almost Lord of the Rings territory, the foreground snow adds to the inhospitable feel.

2 Chris S. Well lit and imaginatively shot (through textured glass?) to produce a soft and glowing image of the flower head. The muted colour and black background work well together as does the contrast between the soft flower and sharp angled edges of the glass.

3 Dennis A. An amazing landscape with the successive ranges of different coloured hills and mountains capped by the snow covered peaks which seem to float in the sky. Inhospitable again but in a totally different way to Andre’s entry.

4 Elaine J. A great capture the interaction between the woman and her dog is superb - while her old man plays gooseberry.

5 Geoff C. Silver birches in snow, white on white. The high viewpoint gives an unusual angle on the trees whose tangle of branches almost obscure the house next door.

6 Julian P. Another snow scene but this time enhanced by a delightful element of colour making the scene more inviting.

7 Keith W. The story of the dip , actual and impending, is well told but other than the woman in the long purple coat there is little to suggest the winter of the title. Why is it that boats nearly always appear to be on the horizon?

    8 Me.

9 Phil C. Accurate panning technique gives the sense of speed here, presumably an extra pair of wheels conforms to the rules of the sport?

10 Richard B. Silos, poles and wires seem to be the only feature of the vast American plains so small wonder that they are so dominant in American landscape photography of the region. Hardly things of beauty but they do symbolise human activity and survival in the area.

11 Tom L. Into the realms of phantasy but great fun. Does the head actually belong to the body, it seems a little strained but these animals can be contortionists.

    1. Yes, the cheetah hasn't been manipulated at all.

  5. Chris S - Such a delicate image! Nicely realised

Dennis A - Delicate pastel colours are pleasing: hard to appeciate scale

Elaine J - I had to look twice! Well seen and captured

Geoff C - Nicely realised greys and whites

Julian P - The dusting of snow adds much to the delicate colours of trees and foliage. Well done!

Keith W - Brave souls! Taken where?

Malcolm R - Hard to miss the red - in Wales, we seem to have doleful green! - I see Einstein says it all…

Phil C - I had completely forgotten the configuration of the Tyrrell: Panning was perfect

    Richard B - Good record

Tom L - Again, a picture which provokes a second and third look. i find the anomalous cheetah entertaining, but much prefer the hoardings.

    Andre H

    Very nice, lots of atmosphere.

    Chris S

A nice softness that suites the delicate colour. Think it would be better with a plain background.

    Dennis A

Superb. An image that is enhanced by a plain blue sky setting off the snow cap perfectly.

    Elaine J

    Lovely moment well caught.

    Geoff C

Nice scene - the ‘phone has handled exposure reasonably well.

    Julian P

Another nice winter scene, but footpath seems to end here.

    Keith W

    Malcolm R

Unusual colour for wheelie bins, and look good against the strong blue of the wall. It is a struggle find things to snap in Covid times and this is well spotted.

    Phil C

Very good shot of the unusual six wheel Tyrrell. The colour scheme of the helmet compliments the car nicely.

    Richard B

Nicely composed with the leaning pole balancing the scene well. Very good image.

    Tom L

You are leading the way in ‘computational photography’! Fun image - stuff of nightmares!
