"Wet Kar (sic)"
Leica Q2, 1/60s, f/11, ISO 100. Cropped.

Andre H
City flag in Volterra, Tuscany. It claims to be the oldest city in Italy, and there are fine Etruscan and Roman remains. Depending on the part of this small city, they might be blue colours instead of red.

Brian O
My pic is of the statue of Earl Byrhtnoth at the end of the Maldon causeway, done by a local sculptor. It reflects the Battle of Maldon (991) which is described in an Anglo-Saxon poem (there is a translation by Tolkien available). The invading Vikings won and Byrhtnoth lost his head (literally). After this the Anglo-Saxon king Ethelred was advised to buy off the Vikings with a payment of what was called the Danegeld. End of history lesson.
I have my own views of why Byrhtnoth lost - but that is another story…

Leica Q2M, orange filter. The statue faces towards Northey Island, where the Vikings landed and fought on the causeway to the mainland. Northey is now administered by the National Trust and is interesting to visit.

A well thought out monochrome image.

    Andre H.
I think a closer crop on the flags would improve the image.

    Brian O.
A strong silhouette and a good use of portrait format.

    Dave C.
    Mine.

    Dave R.
    A strong simple monochrome.

    Dave S.
Very pleasing low light image .

    Dennis A.
    Atmospheric image.

    Elaine J.
A good record of the lighthouse.

    Julian P.
Very colourful scene would make a great jigsaw.

    Ken G.
Busy colourful scene, may be crop a bit off the bottom.

    Malcolm R.
Great urban scene shame there is no people in it.

    Nigel T.
    A very accomplished night scene.

    Phil C.
A strong colourful square format image.

    Richard B.
A subtle high key Winter image.

    Tom L.
    An excellent rugby football image.

  2. 1. Alex B. Nicely done, there are pictures to be found everywhere.

    2. Andre H. Vibrant colour in the flags, maybe crop the plaques from the top edge?

    3. Brian O. I wonder how the local sculptor knew what Earl Byrhtnoth looked like, anyway he is in such deep shadow that we cannot see how he was visualised and the Earl remains a mystery.

    4. Dave C. The angled shot gives a dynamism to the scene that might not otherwise have been there. Bright colours.

    5. David R. The simplicity and framing of this is very satisfying, the figure gives added interest and indicates the scale of the columns. The increasing width of the shadows across the frame is puzzling.

    6. Dave S. The glow of the street lights warm up an otherwise cold toned image of the city at dusk.

    7. Dennis A. A busy early morning(?) scene. The contrast between all the small boats and the four storey passenger ship is striking.

    8. Elaine J. The dark sky and sea sets off the clean lines of the lighthouse perfectly.

    9. Julian P. Sadly Circle 16 is no more but its rival transparency Circle 15 is still going. A vibrant shot of the waterfront and the fishing boats, how many of them have survived I wonder.

    10. Ken G. Have to turn the screen brightness up to get the best out of this exotic looking scene. The orange patches are presumably vegetation of some kind but they do jar with the rest of the colour palette.

    11. Me.

    12. Nigel T. There is always something mysterious about night shots and this is no exception, where is the figure going - and where has he been? The colour difference of the artificial lighting is quite marked.

    13. Phil C. Four shrouded bodies and a silver ghost. It all fits neatly into the square format and subdued grey walls make the perfect backdrop for the bright red covers .

    14. Richard B. Another square format. There is a simplicity and delicacy to this unusual shot that is very appealing.

    15. Tom L. Good action shot. With such a similarity of shirts that must have been a confusing game for everyone involved.

Nicely seen, and I like the framing, we should all take more pictures in wet weather.

    Andre
The repeated flags and shadows stand out well in the frame and the background information in the caption helps understand their significance.

    Brian
A powerful figure against the sky and the orange filter is a good choice. I’ve not been to Northey Island, might be one for a summer visit.

    Dave C
Those pesky safety cars! A good shot of the car and driver doing what it has to do.

    David R
A great street shot, a quiet moment that is beautifully captured and also reflects society.

    Dave S
A quiet evening beside a canal, looks like a nice place to wander. The timing of the shot is just right, with some daylight to help keep the details and yet not too much that is drowns out the lamps. Lovely.

    Dennis A
A misty day, I imagine it is hard work transporting people across the river all day. Nicely framed. And the splash of the oar adds to the moment.

    Elaine
Looks like the weather is about to change, the white lighthouse nicely recorded against the coming rain.

    Julian
The boats seem to become part of the town, merging into one, and I suppose that is apt as the community grew up on the fishing industry. Very nice.

    Ken
Dramatic skies and clear seas, this is obviously not Scarborough! Nicely framed, looks like a location still from a tv interpretation of an Agatha Christie book.

    Malcolm
I like the straight on framing, and the incision of the blocks in the foreground show it is a skate park. The old and new graffiti fighting to be centre stage.

    Nigel
Very atmospheric, the lighting giving an old world feel and yet inviting us to walk to the church. Nicely framed with the wall leading the eye into the space.

    Mine

    Richard
This looks seriously cold! Hands frozen to the pumps if you are not careful. Lovely. I hope the trip was enjoyable and included some warmer moments!

    Tom
The action caught at exactly the right time, all eyes on the man with the ball. What happened? Did he make both through to score?

  4. Alex B: Mine.

Andre H: A nice image. I might have cropped the pics from the top.

Brian O: A nice sky behind the statue - perhaps a bit more detail in the statue would be nice.

Dave C: Excellent image, good use of a shallowish depth of field. The tilt gives it some drama.

    Dave R: Excellent monochrome.

Dave S: A lovely blue-hour shot. The yellow of the street lamps adding some spots of colour to an otherwise almost monochrome image.

Dennis A: A good image - not too busy, but enough to show the atmosphere of the place. A good use of the light and mist (or smog?) toning down the background.

Elaine J: A good shot of the lighthouse, with some structure in the clouds.

Julian P: Quite a busy shot of a busy harbour. The colours are held well - the muted colliers of the town contrasting nicely with the boats. Pity about the sky (the weather!!) but it’s nicely structured.

Ken G: A beautiful coastal scene. The blue of the sky in the upper left is a bit too saturated to be natural: perhaps it is part of a vignette, which draws the viewer to the central structure.

Malcolm R: A noisy image in terms of content (not “grain”), as befits a Skate Park. However, I would have liked to see some people in it - even just one.

Nigel T: A lovely image of the Minster from one of the old cobbled streets - makes the image quiet and dignifies the Minster.

    Phil C: Very colourful.

Richard B: Excellent high-key image, with a very restricted colour palette. Nice one.

Tom L: An excellent sports image. Everyone is looking at the action, so the viewer’s eye is drawn there. The fact that the main player is running out of the image adds to the drama - did he make it?

  5. Alex B - well made, composition and the clarity of the water combine to conjure an interesting image from the everyday

Andre H - the flags and background wall are complemented by the helpful text which describes the history they illustrate well

Brian O - looking upwards into the light, we get a sense of the Earl as a powerful and threatening warrior towering over a Viking opponent

Dave C - the slanted framing conveys the forces involved as the cars round the bend at speed

Dave R - both simple and also subtle, the strong verticals and solitary figure are complemented by the progressively deeper shadows across the columns

    Mine

Dennis A - Atmospheric and aesthetically pleasing, also informative of a different way of life both on the foreground boat and misty background scene

Elaine J - well framed and exposed to portray the structure planted on the coastline between land, sea and sky

Julian P - a classic image that befits its history: subject, colours and rendering vibrant and bustling through the four decades since being captured on film

Ken G - a great counterpoint to the previous image, the highly saturated colours and strong composition so effectively portray this exotic coastline

Malcolm R - the concrete shapes and colourful graffiti show the deserted skatepark as a venue for modern art

Nigel T - beautifully seen an executed to draw the eye not only towards the lit cathedral but also the figure leaving it, pleasing and intriguing

Phil C - the square format helps bring out the metallic grey car body against in its four red shrouded companions and grey background, somehow reminiscent of a parade

Richard B - powerfully subtle image: the position of the pumps in the square frame, and their subdued colours streaked with snow express an ongoing battle with the elements

Tom L - great rugby shot, caught just at the moment where this battle between ball carrier and tackler is yet to be decided

  6. 1. Alex B. Blister-like water droplets transform this polished, contrasty surface into a 3-dimensional image. Well controlled - lovely.

    2. Andre H. Flags, steeped in history and tradition. The cropped edges of the frame are untidy, a distraction, and add little in my view.

    3. Brian O. Use of an orange filter has ensured visual interest in the sky. Highlights in the statue infer 3-dimensional form, while the deep shadows hold a certain amount of mystery.

    4. Dave C. Composed at the bend in the track, I find this scene too congested, visually unwieldy. The clearly defined ’safety car’ succesfully adds humour to the image.

    5. David R. A largely rectilinear scene, almost certainly the Bank of England, London. The shadows add depth. The figure might be more effective if placed off-centre.

    6. Dave S. Photographer and viewer are placed, suspended above a largely cold, watery scene. The eye is drawn to a place of (apparent) safety by the contrasting warm orange glow along the banks.

    7. Dennis A. Contre-jour. With the prevailing mist comes muted colours, and a sense of calm in what is undoubtedly a busy, possibly frenetic ferry terminal.

    8. Elaine J. The white lighthouse stands clearly stated as the subject, boldly breaking the horizontality of the wider scene. The sea at the horizon is not quite level.

    9. Julian P. A picture ‘postcard’ from the past, full of interest in a wholly man-made environment. The written narrative throws light on the long history of Circle 16.

    10. Ken G. Exotic vegetation and an aquamarine sea suggest the tropics. The colours are surprisingly saturated, unreal without appearing deliberate.

    11. Malcolm R. A colourful enclave adopted and decorated by youths. I can but wonder what meetings take place while the traffic, oblivious, passes overhead.

    12. Nigel T. Beautifully exposed. The light spill in the lane adds depth and essential foreground interest.

    13. Phil C. I like the use of line and colour, even the complementary red cable as fine detail. A nice study of a ‘world’ that is not known to me.

    14. My photo.

    15. Tom L. Always challenging, this fast action shot, with selective focus, is well executed.

  7. ALEX B Wet Kar Wet paintwork is usually a good background like this.

My shot of flags on a rough walll took took me eye!

BRIAN O: Nicely composed and good use of cloud. These were difficult times – there is quite a movement now to investigate the period.

DAVE C Well done and composed – background not great, but you have to work with what you get!

DAVID R Great use of sun and shade – Did you take other shots with the model elsewhere in the composition?

DAVE S I know Brugge too well - my mother was Flemish. This shot of Greone Reieis very nicely done – good colours.

DENNIS A Excellent use of light and buildings and boats – well comppsed.

ELAINE J Simple, good use of foreground and location.

JULIAN P Was it really 1985? I found a picture of the circle the other day – There has been a loss of imaginative photographers, I am sorry to say.

KEN R Might have benefitted from a bit more exposure. . . evenat the loss of that super sky.

MALCOLM R Fine collection of painted pictures and designs.

NIGEL T Good evening shot exposure spot on for my taste.

PHIL C Good composition and use of colour. Impressive ‘still life’

RICHARD B Nice play of image and title

TOM L This works very well. Everything feels right to me.

  8. April 2025 Leica Society Circle D

Alex B: A gem of a picture. Contrast and detail impeccable. And a good composition.

Andre H: A stand-out colour steals the show. I am not so happy with the composition in an artistic sense, but the impact is good.

Brian O: There is a trick of light here. The highlight in the “breeches” looks like a gap, so the fellow appears to be all legs - very long legs.

Dave C: As one moment frozen in time, the image lacks excitement. But with your title I sense the day had its frustrations and I am sure would make more sense in a sequence or portfolio.

David R: The architecture makes the young man look very small. I wonder oif he felt overawed by the scale of the building.

Dave S: Bruges was the location of a Spring Meet of Leica Postal Portfolios Circle 16, which I am sure Andre Haynes was with the party. So Bruges is known to me from this one visit. I cannot imagine a more nostalgic image than this. It would have been great to have been there with you. Beautifully captured. A moment to savour.

Dennis A: You have witnessed a human side of Dhaka very well. I guess the subdued colours are due to industrial pollution.

Elaine J: An accurate no-nonsense image of the lighthouse. Well done.

    Julian P: Mine

Ken G: Such harsh colours. True or false? I would have felt more at home with this if the colours were more muted. And what is the red splash in the middle. I can’t work that out.

Malcolm R: We need more of this side of street photography.

Nigel T: A very well processed image, bring out the best of all the features. Very pleasing indeed.

Phil C: A great name and a seemingly low-tech production line! I do see a message here.

Richard B: My second “home” is Iceland, and I can never see enough of its vagaries. This image is a stunner for me. What atmosphere!!!

Tom L: I could stare at the large version of this image for some timer. I do not follow the game but I see here raw power, protectors to head and other limbs, and to cap it all, one player on the ground just at the edge. To capture so much in a fast moving game is just brilliant. A great freeze-frame.

  9. Alex B - love this image. I think the composition is superb , the fact that not all the ‘badge’ is included adds to the intrigue, the tones are great and the water drops add the final touch. My guess is that it’s a Kia badge.

Andre H - very nice, really like the colour contrast between the flags and the wall.

Brian O - very dramatic with an interesting sky. Maybe just a touch of lightening on the statue to bring out a little detail would have been good, but that’s only my opinion.

Dave C - I think the composition is great, the diagonal crop makes the image more interesting. Well captured.

David R - a simple image which for me really works well.

Dave S - this beautiful image really draws my attention. The composition is great and it was taken at the perfect time of day with the lights and reflections adding to the interest.

Dennis A - a good image which certainly portrays the area well with that permanent misty haze partially defusing the sun.

Elaine J - really nice landscape with great composition, tones and exposure and an interesting sky.

Julian P - lovely image. Difficult to better Kodachrome for it’s colour rendition which makes this image great.

Ken G - the portrait mode of this landscape really works very well. In my opinion I would have been tempted to add a little more light to the land to bring out more detail of the vegetation.

Malcolm R - graffiti always make a great subject for any image and certainly works well in this case. The composition works well and I think you’ve done good with the exposure not to have blown out the right side of the picture and still retain the detail under the bridge.

Nigel T - beautiful image of York Minster taken at the right time of day. Love how the cobbled street, particularly on the right with the light, leads the eye through to the main subject.

Phil C - very interesting image with the 21mm lens making a great composition. Love how the aluminium body of the car contrasts with the red covers in the background.

Richard B - love the simplicity of this image, it just works so well.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Alex B - super mono detail well suited to 1:1 format.
Andre H - flags are always interesting but I’m a bit disturbed by the shadows.
Brian O - looks dramatic against the sky and retains sufficient detail.
Dave C - the angle adds some tension and drama.
David R - great symmetry and increasing shadows add drama.
Dave S - just sufficient light to make this an interesting and moody shot.
Elaine J - pleasing and dramatic against a brooding sky.
Julian P - Kodachrome, what a lovely word and a nice scan.
Ken G - just the right exposure to add a little drama.
Malcolm R - a sign of the times but no skaters.
    Nigel T - as Dave S
Phil - I love the sporty low profile castors.
Richard B - looks quite surreal
Tom L - nice rugger shot with pano format which suits
