Mud, mud, glorious mud. Heybridge Basin where the Chelmer and Blackwater canal joins the river Blackwater, opposite Northey Island (site of the Battle of Maldon in 991, recorded in the famous Anglo-Saxon poem).

Are you the reflection? And is it a posed shot or a candid?
Either way it is a good image !
Julian P Wildflowers lochan
I have been watching the weather forecast this last few days _ hope all is still OK? Such a gentle picture.
Ken G Antonia
Nicely composed and excellent colour balance.
Malcolm R A Walk in the Park
What a common but pleasing image – very enjoyable
Nigel T Castle Combe
A location I know (or knew} very well, from 40+ years ago. It is so unchanged, but still lovely!
Phil C Frosty Morning
Very pleasing, and good focus of the elements
Richard B Staircase
Nicely done and good balance

A very graphic architectural image.
1. Alan B. A festive scene, visually busy, but one that would delight every child. The highlights in the background ‘bokeh’ detract from the standing figures.
ReplyDelete2. Andre H. I like the graphic shadow cast on the pale facade of the hotel. It illustrates the towering form of the spiral stair standing alongside; together the two parts make the whole.
3. Brian O. A scene transformed at low tide - mud and more mud, as in the title. I am content to enjoy it from afar; somehow the net in the foreground adds a sense of security. The solitary boat might have been better positioned to avoid the visual collision with the jetty.
4. Dave C. A documentary image that draws attention to unsightly signs that accumulate ad-hoc in our towns. Often an afterthought, they may assist way-finding, but do they add anything to the appearance of the urban environment? I guess the use here of an oblique perspective is intentional. To my mind, in this instance, it would have been better to ensure verticals are corrected to vertical.
5. Dave S. There is surely humour and bravado in this portrait - 'Christmas Spirit’ indeed. Is the lady playing to the camera, or is this an opportune, captured candid shot? The bold, if ill-advised, drinking of spirits from a bottle in the street, together with the scanty dress is surely bravado in town on a winter’s day. But it’s also fun, sporty, it’s colourful and we are treated to wonderful subject isolation.
6. Julian P. I imagine this scene is representative of a peat bog left to nature, but is it a peat bog? It is a wild expanse for sure, the frost alone suggests the season.
7. Ken G. A sense of joy is conveyed in what I imagine is a family portrait. Smiling and at ease, your model Antonia plays with a youngster who is hidden from view. The movement in the extensive flowering crop is welcome. I feel the lady could be in sharper focus to good effect.
8. Malcolm R. There is humour in this image. Canada geese crossing a path, disciplined and in line, apparently untroubled by the presence of the photographer. The gull looks towards the camera, oblivious to the geese.
9. Nigel T. This image of Castle Combe, in monochrome, is reminiscent of an old 20th century photo, perhaps from the decades that preceded the onset of colour capture. Taken on a Leica digital compact camera, (QP), it is truly of the 21st century yet it remains timeless.
10. Phil C. We can all relate to the beauty of virgin hoar frost on foliage. This is an intimate scene. Here, the green/yellow hues in the leaves add much-needed contrast, and the softer rendering does nothing to spoil the scene.
11. My Photo.
Alan B - A jolly and festive image, wide open well chosen to isolate the lead figures and suggest a sense of momentum emerging from the busy background
ReplyDeleteAndre H - spiralling skywards, the stairway, its shadow and the background building combine with the strong sidelight to create a new structure
Brian O - straight into the light seems to reinforce the emptiness and flatness of the mud, while the fence in the foreground creates a barrier differentiating that world from the viewer on the bank
Dave C - interestingly off-kilter, enhanced by the title highlighting the sign while for me the tree and its shadow leap out. A sideways look
Mine
Julian P - the prominence of the water in the foreground adds interest, compositionally in reflecting the solitary tree and by emphasising the wintry coldness mirrored from the sky
Ken G - the bold framing and distinct colour treatment give this fun picture a strong vibe that elevates it above a usual family portrait
Malcolm R - well captured, it echoes the Beatles Abbey road album cover with a twist added by the little bird right foreground looking straight to camera
Nigel T - classic feel in framing and treatment, depicted in a way that takes you back to an earlier era and so enhances our sense of the historic scene
Phil C - simple and strong, three green leaves capture the sun they need to survive the sharp white frost against the purple/black winter background - its photographic potential fully realised
Richard B - powerfully abstract, the angle and two black bases add a threatening, oppressive quality as if some unremitting machine is bearing down on the viewer
Alan B: I like the bizarre aspect of this. I do prefer old fashioned Garden Centres where the focus is on growing rather than selling Chinese imports. A good wake-up picture. Thank you.
ReplyDeleteAndre H: This is a photographer’s photograph! It appeals to me. It must be the mathematician in me.
Brian O: It is good to see a few patches of blue in the surface of the bay. Without the blue, it could have been difficult to distinguish that the surface was essentially mud.
Dave C: You would need to explain why a tilted image was the outcome you wished for.
Dave S: Impeccable. Sharp - focussed on the essentials - colourful and a title that explains all.
Julian P: Mine
Ken G: I like the informality of this. So relaxed.
Malcolm R: It just had to be taken. If I had taken the image I feel I would have cropped out the most left-hand bird and then cropped rather tightly the rest of the action.
Nigel T: A classic view. It is refreshing to see it in monochrome.
Phil C: Such beautiful colours. Interesting viewpoint. I may learn something from this.
Richard B: You have mastered the framing for symmetry. Good tonal range. Perfect of its type.
1. Alan B. All the glitter of the garden centre at Christmas (actually from mid-September through to Boxing day). A fun seasonal picture.
ReplyDelete2. Andre H. Strong graphic image made at the time of day when the shadows fall in the best possible way on the white wall. Strangely the shadow gives a better idea of the spiral staircase than the real thing.
3. Brian O. Almost monochromatic, controlling the glare of the mud reduces the shadows to stark blacks. The foreground mud holds the promise of intriguing patterns but are obscured by the chain-link fence
4. Dave C. Not sure what to make of this. Other than its location the parking sign is quite ordinary. The condition of the building is questionable quite a part from the skew (is that condensation in the windows?) - is that perhaps the purpose of the photo?
5. Dave S. Another fun seasonal shot. She is being photographed from both sides simultaneously.
6. Julian P. Frost on the grass and ice on the water but the sun shone on your New Years Day. Geograph is new to me so thanks for the introduction.
7. Ken G. Nothing to beat mucking about in a field, nice fun shot for the family album.
8. Me.

9. Nigel T. Olde England, preserved for the tourists - but better off without them!
10. Phil C. That touch of light coming through the leaf is a delight against the brown dead stems. Why is it that hoar frost never seems sharp in photos?
11. Richard B. Your seeing eye again. At first sight I thought this was an open stairway.
A seemingly simple image very carefully framed and well presented.
Alan B
ReplyDeleteA happy seasonal scene, I do like the out of focus background lights.
Andre H
A most interesting viewpoint enhanced by the strong cross lighting generating the shadows, although I do find the top of the staircase rather dark
Brian O
A rathe bleak scene the strong lighting enhancing the feeling, the boat behind the jetty is a little obtrusive.
Dave C
A shot of the mundane enhanced by the shadow of the tree, I find the lack of verticals slightly jarring.
Dave S
This is a fun festive season image, perhaps the quick shot of alcohol will help fend off the cold of the day!
Julian P
I do like the muted tones of this landscape and the reflection of the tree in the water.
Ken G
A most pleasing family image, overall it has a feel of a 1970’s advertising shot.
Malcom R
This is a fun image, the geese crossing the path in a line and the gull looking towards the camera, a well captured moment.
Phil C
The bright frost covered leaves catching the light is nicely enhanced by the muted tones of the out of focus background.
Richard B
This image is almost an optical illusion, at first glance it appears as a staircase but upon closer study the true nature of the image is revealed, very well observed.
Alan
ReplyDeleteGorgeously sharp and a real festive feel to this one. The second chap in green seems to out of step with his fellow guards!
Andre
A classic black and white shot, well seen and good use of the low viewpoint to make the most of the shadows.
Brian
I can’t imagine how anyone would fight on land like this, the mud must just slow you down to crawling pace. It looks like a good day for a bracing walk though. Nicely taken.
Dave C
I really like this. The building looks like it has seen better days and in a style you find in many city centres, set against the trees, both in the foreground as well as what looks like a shadow on the building itself. Of course spotting a parking sign is always welcome too.
Dave S
Looks like the start of a long evening. The photo works well, you can see the smile and it evokes fun at Christmas time.
Julian
Lovely tones in this one, and the story of how you all take a picture at midday on Christmas Day adds meaning, a lovely idea.
Ken
A carefree summer, or an advert for a clothing company? The pose works well and the use of colour keeps the focus on the model. Nicely done.
Malcolm
Well spotted and caught, the little chap in the foreground seems to want to join in.
Nigel
A picturesque English scene, the reflection adding the feel of a still and restful day.

Another great architecture hot, dividing up the space in the frame in sympathy with the building, drawing the eye in and adding confusion as to whether this is a roof or a staircase. Very clever.
