September 2023

Andre H
She looks very firm, but when my lens hood fell to the platform she retrieved it having already gestured not to leave the train. I was determined to emulate the old Orient Express route from Sirkecie station in Istanbul as far as Vienna, which from Paris I had already done three different routes. Actually she smiled in a very friendly way, but treated her work very seriously. This was the station at Brasov. Only Serbia was less pleasant in the Balkans, I found. This would have been M6 and 50 f2.

  1. Malcolm R the winner with a fabulous shot.

  2. 1. Andre H. The lady may have smiled for you, but my choice would always be for a natural photo, as here; a person going about her business, not compromised by the the direct intervention of the camera.

    2. Dave C. An everyday scene is shared here, food being eaten while on the move, or while seated outdoors, and increasingly during all seasons in the UK. Here we are shown a solitary figure, seemingly deep in thought oblivious to the photographer. I like the broad tonal range.

    3. Dave S. The camera reigns in this head & shoulders portrait, the roadie posing confidently in a playful manner. Despite him dominating the frame, peering down on me, it is the lettering on the railings that holds my attention at my eye level.

    4. Geoff C. The photographer has chosen his position carefully, ensuring the bright ’rim’ lighting provides a spark of magic in this monochrome sunset. I like it. For my part, I might have wished for a little more detail in the foreground shadows.

    5. Julian P. This sounds like a wonderful adventure. You have sown the seeds, and I need to know more. Where did you come from? Where were you going? Why? Your aerial photo is special, lovely colour, complemented by foreground floral interest; the hut offers scale below.

    6. Malcolm R. For me aliums hold a certain seasonal majesty. They hold their heads high, standing boldly above the crowd on slender stems. This is a lovely image, a star burst, taken from above. The light falls precisely where it is needed on the seed head. But the seed head is not sharp. Does it matter? Not at all. The photo has atmosphere, and is well executed in what, to me, is a sepia tone.

    7. Nigel T. A busy scene of people at play in Derbyshire. I think we can all relate to such a day, doing as others do under a bright sun. But the carrying of the dogs is unusual, not one but three in succession! My eye went first to the brighter colour of the green pasture. Only after, did I find the dogs. You are wise to have avoided wet feet in getting a closer shot.

    8. Phil C. This rural scene is very special; monochrome is an appropriate choice. I very much enjoy the light falling on the boardwalk, the patterns of the boards and the wire mesh alike; most importantly the light that brings the reeds to life.

    9. My Photo.

    Pleasing portrait, captured the moment.

    Dave C
    That’s me.

    Dave S
    Excellent Roadie portrait.

    Geoff C
Good rim light on the cloud, nice beams of light.

    Julian P
    Interesting scene well captured.

    Ken G
    Too abstract for me.

    Malcolm R
Sharp where it needs to be, well framed.

    Nigel T
    Funny scene, well captured.

    Phil C
Good tonal range, sharpness through out.

    Richard B
Well framed, good composition, good use of shadows.

  4. Dave C : Enjoying the sandwich – caught in mid chew, it seems!

Dave S - Abbey Road roadie – He did enjoy the moment too.

Geoff C – Sunset behind cumulus - Spot on for timing: I think a crop of the left quarter would be my choice.

Julian – This is splendid: from the range of hills to the colours on shore; the hut gives a sense of scale. Is your inflatable on the shoreline?

Ken G -- Rainy abstract: I would never have guessed Times Square! The more I look at the image, the more I see.

Malcolm R – Allium Seed Head - good stuff here, and a fine shot well framed.

Nigel T - Dovedail – I do like the title as well as the composition.

Phil C –Cley next the sea – vertical format is perfect.

Richard B The Bridge - Good use of shapes which bridge?

    1. Thank you, Andre. It's a suspension bridge (pedestrian/cycle only) over a busy road near Cambridge. Richard.

  5. A comment on Greenland. Yes the inflatable is on the shore, and I travelled 700 km in it with a colleague with just a radio in case of emergencies. This was in 1969. I returned this September as my next image will testify.

  6. Andre H: You have caught an expression of ruthless efficiency that I would not care to argue with. You are a brave photographer, Andre.

Dave C: The picture has made me conjecture on many points, so has made quite an impression.

David S: How anyone can persuade a guy to pose in this manner is beyond me. My admiration to you. I do like the informative graffiti on the railings as well.

Geoff C: Sunsets are colourful, and I feel a vital aspect is missing when constrained to black and white.

    Julian P: Mine

Ken G: This fits a rainy day perfectly.

Malcolm R: I like this. I have no sense of scale knowing that you used the 100 mm Macro Elmar and bellows. I guess it may be smaller than I imagine.

Nigel T: Great stuff. I suppose this is a regular occurrence, but it is a great novelty for me.

Phil C: An environment I know well (from much of East Scotland). I like this angle very much. You have the texture well brought out in the wood and wire netting.

Richard B: An abstract that conveys power. Brilliant.

  7. Andre H - good environmental portrait, it says something about the subject and also the working atmosphere

Dave C - intriguingly bittersweet, he is enjoying the sandwich but his expression and the framing suggests a sense of loneliness

    Mine

Geoff C - this repays a longer look, the radiating diagonal sunbeams over the horizontal layers, with its hub the bright edging of the clouds

Julian P - another dramatic scene, more so with the hut providing a sense of scale, and the challenging range of tones and colours managed very well

Ken G - interesting juxtaposition of a strong composition with the figured framed by the buildings and indistinct treatment. It asks questions of the viewer

Malcolm R - classic macro image, the framing of with the leaves around the edge especially pleasing

Nigel T - amusing moment well caught, not just the three dogs but also suggesting their slightly precarious progress. Might be worth having a play with it in b&w?

Phil C - lovely, evocative image, well composed, detailed in the right places and great tonal range

Richard B - very strong composition and execution, its powerful effect enhanced further by the subtle gradation of the sky. Very effective.

I wish rail staff in the UK were as obliging! An interesting character study with narrative background to the image.

    Dave C
I wonder where he bought his sandwich from – Greggs perhaps! Although there is pathos too, a lonely soul perhaps?

    Dave S
Having worked with a few roadies – this one made me smile – such characters!

    Geoff C
I do like this – Fomapan Classic lives up to its name, a lovely image.

    Julian P
It took me a minute or so to find the hut, a wonderful shot making the hike well worth the effort.

    Ken G
A most atmospheric abstract although the figure on the right is a little intrusive.

    Malcolm R
A well crafted image with good macro technique, not sure about the toning though.

    Phil C
A very nice atmospheric image, the path leading the eye into a stormy sky. The monochrome treatment works well.

    Richard B
The strong shapes of the bridge supports and cables combine with the sky to make a most arresting image.

A lovely reportage shot and a good record of your journey that obviously reflects the moment well.

    Dave C
I like this in black and white, it fits the mood of quiet contemplation. Or maybe just a tasty sandwich.

    Dave S
A fun moment of relaxation between moments of work. I like the graffiti on the railings too.

    Geoff
A new day awaits. A engaging image, beautiful too.

    Julian
The hut really adds an idea of the scale of the place, it must have been an incredible trip to make.

    Ken
Good to see an SL2 shot, I like the abstract nature of this, you get a sense of place and the figure but in a dreamy way.

    Malcolm
These are such beautiful flowers, adding texture and shape even when past their best, and this shows this well. A beautiful picture.

    Nigel
I haven’t been to Dovedale for years but these stepping stones are always fun, the dog seems to have the best of it.

    Mine

    Richard
The piercing lines of the bridge direct the frame well, nicely echoed in the distance, beautiful tones too.

  10. 1. Andre H. A very serious young lady, she seems to have her official beady eye on something out of frame that does not meet with her approval. Good to know that she can also smile.

    2. Dave C. The lunchtime sandwich, cheese and pickle again then back to the grind.

    3. Dave S. Hamming it up for the camera - or does he always look like that? Great fun portrait.

    4. Geoff C. God’s fingers well captured on black and white film.

    5. Julian P. A very forbidding landscape and it sounds a perilous journey to get there. Was the M2 especially prepared for the cold climate?

    6. Ken G. Sorry Ken but this just does not work for me, I get the impression that it is the result of accidental pressure on the shutter button.

    7. Me.

    8. Nigel T . What are the chances of capturing three people all carrying their dogs across the stepping stones at the same time. The middle dog seems particularly insecure, hope he got across safely. An otherwise typical tourist shot made very special by the peculiar circumstances.

    9. Phil C. The tall sedges and low viewpoint lend an air of mystery to this shot, where does the path lead and what lies around the corner?

    10. Richard B. A very simple but strong graphic image perfectly suited to black & white. Less is more.
