Tokachidake. "We started climbing at 8:30, rain forecast from 15:30 - plenty of time. After an hour it started raining with strong wind. I insisted we should go back to obvious reluctance from my young colleague. An hour later we got back to the car, rather damp, but then the rain became torrential and continued for the next 2 hours. 'Good decision' he said. "😁

  1. Andre H pleasing composition but is it quite sharp enough?
Chris S I really like the close crop, texture and sharpness of this image
Dave C well observed and good people content but is it a little cluttered in the background?
Elaine J uncluttered composition, perfect exposure and has that lush and velvety Leica look
Geoff C lacks a little interest and tonal variation to me
    Julian P a charming shot
Malcolm R thd reflection works well as does the subtle lighting. I may have taken the glass and pens out of shot to de clutter
Nigel lovely b and w range of tones and pleasing softness
Phil C very moody shot that looks as though the owner of the desk has slipped off for a cuppa
Richard B leaves me a little cold I’m afraid, could do with more punch and contrast in the shadows
Tom L very moody and good use of differential focus

A well caught scene, all three people about to take a bite.

    Chris
As you say, lots of grey, it makes for an intriguing frame.

    Dave
I do like a shot from the hip, there’s a great book of that name which I always find inspiring.

    Elaine
There is that gorgeous light that you always seem to find, makes me want to head out into the countryside.

    Geoff
This looks like a remote spot, the encroaching clouds and broken cairn (?) give it a sense of foreboding.

    Julian
Beautiful trees, the shapes and textures come across well here, and the greens and browns are calming.

    Ken
The dark sculpture agains the lighter building works well, seemingly forming a cross behind him, which seem apt.

    Malcolm
The Brasso makes this picture, a lovely touch in a shot without any brass in sight, but we can imagine some tough polishing going on elsewhere.

    Nigel
It looks like it would have made a good spa and I was surprised to hear it is in Suffolk, looks like something from a Bond movie.

    Richard
Simple lines and an enticing light, really like this one.

    Tom
Yet more beautiful light, perfectly caught in black and white.

  3. Chris – Shades of Grey: Good puzzle picture and good shades

Dave C - Clarkson’s: I like this, although the subject matter is not perfect, it really is interesting

Elaine J Stand Alone: Great colours and shapes, although I might have done a foreground chop.

Geoff C: Tokachidake: Wherever this was , mountains in rain are all the same – your decision was indeed the right one!

Julian P: Beech: Foreground shapes are a delight and the background is complementary.

Ken G: Monte Carlo Symmetry: the winking statue is fascinating.

    Malcolm R: Country Church Vestry : a stolen moment…

Nigel: Suffolk Bothy : what a sad sight of neglect – hope the rest of the buildings were in better order!

Phil C: Desk in Cragside: a nice comparison with Ken’s desk this feels … right.

Richard B: Nighlight: crafty title and nice shapes and lighting.

Tom L: Wheat: Good! fine use of depth of field to make the picture.

  4. Andre H: Universal enjoyment yet enjoyed whee least expected perhaps. A good study.

Chris S: I like this. Simple and striking. I guess I would have tweaked the contrat to get the ultimate range of black to white. (Or is it my monitor?)

David C: This just fails to be convincing. Is there a message?

Elaine J: This shimmers. So very refreshing and almost magical.

Geoff C: This does look forlorn. I wondered at first whether this was a steaming lave flow. I must google Tokachidake..

    Julian P: Mine

Ken G: Symmetrical certainly, but what about some breathing space above the cross on the roof? It could be truncated in your image! I do want to be sure I have the whole building.

Malcolm R: I do like the humdrum with the austere. The whole picture works for me. I am though uncertain what is on the wall at the upper right. Nothing springs to mind.

Nigel: This looks like an amazing place. A very satisfactory picture.

Phil C: Thanks for an inside view at Cragside. I have just explored the grounds so a peep inside is a great help.

Richard B: Masterly. Such subtle colour. Wow.

Tom L: The depth of field control makes this picture.

  5. 1) Andre H. A busy street scene; a riot of colour in layers. There is much to enjoy in this picture.

    2) Chris S. An abstract in monochrome. The sharply defined lines in the lower frame suggest a metallic or plastic object, but maybe it is organic. I wonder.

    3) Dave C. Always a challenge to shoot from the hip, and the more so at a fast aperture (f/2.8). The moment is well captured, although a little distant with a loss of immediacy (too much open foreground) to my mind.

    4) Elaine J. This is nicely seen, a lone tree, silhouetted against a vibrant green background. The decision to place the tree in the centre, ensuring space around it, is to be commended.

    5) Geoff C. How quickly the weather can change on high ground! I hope you weren’t too disappointed. I like the muted colours in your photo. The foreground interest, the stones, are essential to the overall scene, giving a sense of scale, in my view.

    6) Julian P. I like the framing that ensures separation of the tree trunks. This picture has a lovely translucent quality.

    7) Ken G. An interesting composition that points skyward like so many churches in the Christian world. The perspective does draw my eye to the pinnacle, the cross atop the belfry, which is too tightly cropped and would benefit from space. The sky adds mood; the highlights are well controlled.

    8) Malcolm R. There is much to explore in this image, the two mirrors add depth. I think there is a loss of detail in the leaded window, a minor point. The colours are suitably ecclesiastical, the “Brasso” and red pen add vitality, an initial focus for the eye.

    9) Nigel. The composition is effective, the grassy mound and tree canopy giving way to the building beyond. The photos has an HDR quality, perhaps it is the light - a breach in the cloud - or treatment in post-processing.

    10) Phil C. Steeped in visual interest, the desk benefits massively from the ambient light (natural & artificial), adding warmth. The chair holds the frame together visually, and gives meaning to an otherwise bare foreground. I like this very much.

    11) Richard B. My photo.

    12) Tom L. The swathes of cereal are nicely represented in monochrome; the light is special. While this special lens (50mm Summicron) offers so much in differential focus, I wonder if the middle foreground is a little soft, insufficient to freeze it, or convey movement. But then it could be my screen, my eye, or just my personal taste.

  6. 1. Andre H. A lovely grab shot in the crowded market with the three main characters all eating. The expression of the little girl is delightful. That white band at the top lets the image down.

    2. Chris S. An abstract image of light, shadow and texture with a 3D quality to it. Not sure what we are looking at (leaves maybe?) but it does not really matter, it is an intriguing picture.

    3. Dave C. Typical market scene but not one that piques the imagination or directs our attention to anywhere in particular.

    4. Elaine J. Beautiful light in the foreground here enhanced by the haze in the background which gives depth to the picture. A step or two forwards (if possible) would have lost the boulder at the bottom.

    5. Geoff C. The weather certainly looks threatening so a good idea to not venture too far. The painted characters on the rocks are interesting I would like to see them more prominent and perhaps lighten the foreground.

    6. Julian P. Gorgeous light here coming through the leaf canopy, the two beeches (in an oak wood?) perfectly placed, dominate the scene.

    7. Ken G. Certainly symmetrical and good contrast between the ornate light building and the modern dark bishop. Something odd about the sky?

    8. Me.

    9. Nigel T. The building and the garden look neglected, what a waste.

    10. Phil C. This appears to be very much a working desk with its blotter and blueprints
and other paraphernalia, Lord A has just popped out for a moment.

    11. Richard B. The simple geometry and predominantly blue & brown colour scheme set against the dark sky makes a bold design, the cast shadow shapes are interesting.

    12. Tom L. Landscape on a small scale, does the limited depth of field add to or detract from the overall effect?

I like this candid street scene, vibrant colours with interesting faces.

    Chris S

An interesting abstract image – not sure what it is but the strong diagonals make an appealing image.

    Dave C

The image is well captured from the hip – but there is no real centre of interest.

    Elaine J

I do like this image – the stark tree against a soft receding landscape is well captured.

    Geoff C

I suspect this is a landscape image you had to work hard to get given the weather conditions – a memento of a good decision!

    Julian P

A calm woodland image full of texture and muted colours, I do find the slightly offset framing leaves an area of bland space on the right.

    Ken G

An interesting statue – leaves me wanting to see more of the surrounding area to give context – the cropping of the cross on the dome is slightly jarring to the eye.

    Malcolm R

A most satisfying image I do like the use of the mirror and the reds of the pen and Brasso tin.

    Phil C

I do like the atmosphere within this image although I would have liked to have seen a little more detail in the bottom area.

    Richard B

An interesting composition which I like although the right-hand building detracts slightly from the overall impact.

    Tom L

I would have preferred more wheat to be in focus – as it stands the receding out of focus field and the sky looks rather messy to my eye.
