  1. Circle D - December 2020 - Dennis A

Andre H - a nice idea and I would have liked to see a little more of the window display. in fact if you crop this and make a portrait shot of the display case there is another picture.

Chris S - well seen and executed. All of the elements of the picture combine well.

Elaine J - interesting shot of interesting chairs with nice light.

Geoff C - some lovely blue tones in this. Strangely I have no sense of scale but that is not too important.

Julian P - great colours, nice composition and order - everything well placed with no distractions to the eye.

Keith W - as always a well considered shot and the three people make it work.

Malcolm R - interesting idea to show the effects of surgery and having a good sky a pleasing picture.

Mike B - I always enjoy simple images and the letterbox works well for this.

Phil C - a typical K 64 shot but a little too muck light on the leaves which distracts.

Richard B - the more I look the more I like and a good sky.

Tom L - a nice shot but missing some tonal range which would enhance it.

  2. Chris S - This nearly works: as it is, it is not quite what you saw when you took it, I suspect. I spend too much of my time looking for the same conjunctions.

Dennis A – Good patterns in the fields but the water lacks separation.

Elaine J – What elaborate chairs! Light falls nicely, but I think one chair might be enough.

Geoff C - I very much like the patterns of snow and ice but some sunlight or flash light would enhance the image.

Julian P - I think the picture is in the rocks and leaves rather than the overall image.

Keith W – Nice sense of depth, and good shapes in the image. I think however that you have two distinct pictures here.

Malcolm R – This is a good ‘before and after’ image which works well.

Mike B – What an impressive view! But the man and dog are so small in the frame that it is hard to distinguish them.

Phil C – The berries are a delight, but te right hand sidebackgound is a little distracting.

Richard B – wow! I love the spacious of this viewpoint, together with the big sky. The building looks very photogenic.

Not sure what you are showing us. The trinket box is nicely shown but the oof selfie is a distraction.

    Chris S

Clever title.. Nice relaxed pose and well composed.

    Dennis A

The balloon trip must have been a wonderful experience. Good well timed composition. Without the boat would not recognise the water.

    Elaine J

Very nice light accentuating the relief on the chairs.

    Geoff C

That looks cold! Like the hint of colour.

    Julian P

Lovely early Autumn colour. Think I would prefer a slightly wider view showing more of the leaves.

The yellow filter has done its job with the sky. Nicely taken with a 21mm - not easy. The starkness of left tree makes the image interesting.

    Mike B

The shot certainly lends itself for a letter box crop. Perfect placement of the man. Like it!

    Phil C

If it’s Kodachrome 64 it must be good! Very seasonal and room in the top right corner for the “Seasons Greeting”. Very good.

    Richard B

Really like this and think the ratio of land to sky area is perfect. Would ask if the hut should be a little off centre though.

    Tom L

One of the worlds most photogenic places. This works very well in b&w. Think I would prefer a little more sky in lieu of foreground, but nevertheless a very striking image.

WISHING EVERYONE A HAPPY 2021 AND HAVE YOUR JABS SO WE CAN ALL MEET SAFELY IN BUXTON!

An interesting collection of items for sale, and of course the Leica is reflected in the lid of the box, adding value to the contents.

    Chris S
This is fun, nicely done and well spotted. So, how long did she have to stand there?

    Dennis A
I think this might be a first for Circle D, a shot form the air. A stunning landscape and really well framed to make a fascinating picture.

    Elaine J
Such beautiful carving and the light is just right to show off the details.

    Geoff C
A dramatic winter scene, nicely exposed and it gives a sense of depth.

    Julian P
Such lovely colours, and well framed under the tree with the stones leading you into the frame.

    Keith W
The title works well and the figures are perfectly positioned in the frame, a small part of it and yet they dominate.

    Malcolm R
The yellow filter was a good choice here and the balance of the two trees works well in black and white.

    Mike B
Another shot where the subject is small in the frame, and again, this works - he seems to be slowly being enveloped by the approaching tide.

    Mine

    Richard B
This really does feel like a scene from a film, the wide open space and old building conjure up lots of ideas.

    Tom L
Lots of drama in this one, the black and white working well to draw you in, like a scene from The Lost World.

  5. 1) Andre H. There is plenty of interest in your shop window, including the extra dimension of your own reflection. The cropped lask (far right) is a little distracting in bright yellow, and I wonder if the composition would be improved by removing it from the frame.

    2) Chris S. My eye follows the sign to the lady to complete the story. A chance moment, or posed? Perhaps the answer lies in the title!

    3) Dennis A. A wonderful opportunity for aerial photography in an enchanting location amongst cultivation. The image includes strong diagonals, relieved by the incidence of the boat, itself conveniently highlighted by the water trail in its wake. Despite this, the boat is a little lost in the wider landscape.

    4) Elaine J. I like the composition, and the muted colours. The light falls exactly where it is needed, giving depth to the beautifully carved woodwork on the seats.

    5) Geoff C. Almost a monochrome scene. - an unusual view. I love the subtlety of the blue tones, tending to turquoise, that draw the eye.

    6) Julian P. This is full of the warmth of an autumnal, woodland scene. The foreground stones are essential to the composition, creating depth. I am impressed that you have achieved the quality at a high ISO setting of 3200.

    7) Keith W. I like the spontaneity, the action, but find my eye is drawn away by the bright sky beyond. At the risk of being controversial, I would opt for a 16:9 panorama with sky removed if it was mine. But it is not mine, and it is not what you saw!

    8) Malcolm R. I like the range of tones. The use of the yellow filter is very effective in managing highlights and ensuring contrast where it is needed in the sky. The shadows anchor the trees and add interest. As for the brutal tree surgery, that is outside the photographer’s control, and art will always be in the eye of the beholder!!

    9) Mike B. Space, more space and solitude. Shingle Street is known partly for inspiring minimalist compositions, and this is very successful. The figure is all important in the scene.

    10) Phil C. A great seasonal shot that succeeds. The negative space to the right of the cluster of berries balances the composition. The single highlight (far right) is distracting, but easily remedied.

    11) Richard B. My photo.

    12) Tom L. Your choice of aperture has ensured front to back focus. The curious viewer is offered a wealth of detail and, while the tonal range might be greater, it is a minor point overall. It seems a little churlish to mention the man-made paraphernalia (far right); it is alien, but easily removed from the hand of nature.

  6. 1. Andre. Placing the box in the centre of the frame has resulted in a bitty composition with other items chopped off at both sides. The inclusion of a self-portrait in an antique shop window is a novel concept and may have helped to reduce more distracting reflections in the mirror.

    2. Chris S. A nice touch of humour. The girl playing statues reflects the ambiguity of the notice and captures the moment nicely. Also you have caught the jet from the sprinkler at the optimum time to show that it is in use and barring the way, how long does she have to wait to get past without getting wet?

3 Dennis A. Early light has brought out the best in this aerial shot showing the patterns in the waves and crop lines (what is the crop by the way ?) The boat and its wake give the image a further dimension. Reminds me of photos in Yann Arthus-Bertrand’s “ The Earth from the Air”.

    4. Elaine J. Extraordinary chairs, beautifully crafted but I guess made for show rather than comfort. The combination of indoor and outdoor light has not made exposure easy, perhaps a touch of flash would have helped the shadows on this occasion.

    5. Geoff C. A scene of contrasts, the whites of the snow and the dark tones of the rocks, the solidity of the icicles and the free flowing waterfall. It is difficult to gauge the scale, it appears to be a long drop but the brushwood suggests otherwise.

    6. Julian P. Spectacular colours give this a real glow, the rocks break up the foreground nicely and the initials carved onto the tree trunk give the human touch without being intrusive.

    7. Keith W. The figures make the shot, I particularly like the one on the left caught in mid stride as he jumps onto the next step. The cloud formations are generally good but the big white one in the top right rather unbalances things in both size and tone and I would consider a crop along the top.

    8. Me.

    9. Mike B. A very simple composition with pleasing colours, the man (and the dog) are very small in the frame but also very important.

    10. Phil C. Very seasonal, the dark background gives the berries and frost prominence.

11 Richard B. Splendid isolation, I wonder where the kids come/came from. The clouds make a kind of “X” formation perfectly centred on the building. Fence posts and wire suggest this is not quite the wide open space that we might expect.

    12. Tom L. This gives a good impression of the route through the mountains with the road itself hardly in evidence (lose the bridge on the extreme right). Perhaps just a touch more contrast in the central mountain?

  7. Andre H
The exposure is okay but I think the composition lacks, with the front of the box being cut off, the beer stein to the right and candle holder to the left should have either been shown in full, or deleted.

    Chris S
Nice image but feel the pose could have been more interesting and relaxed.

    Dennis A
Must have been a great trip but I find the composition a little confusing.

    Elaine J
Nice image which is well exposed. Shows good detail and is well balanced between the light from the windows and the shadows.

    Geoff C
Nice scene but I think it needs the shadows need boosting to show more of the details.

    Julian P
    Nice image, composition and light.

    Keith W
Interesting image compositionally but I may have added a touch and light to the wall and maybe darkened the sky a little.

    Malcolm R
Nice, however I may have added some highlights to the trees to separate them from the background.

    Mike B
    Very minimal but effective.

    Phil C
Very nice, I like the way you’ve used a shallow depth of field to “bring out” the berries.

    Richard B
Very nice, really like the sky. If possible, I may have been tempted to have the hut slightly to the left and off-centre, as I think it may have made for a stronger composition.

  8. Andre H - Munich Shop Window:
I’m struggling a bit with your composition Andre. If your reflection is an intrinsic element, then do you need all the other items in the image other than the box. If on the other hand your reflection is incidental then perhaps more of the shop window and contents would add to the shot.

    Chris S - How Long … :
I like the idea but wish the water jet was further around to the right begging the question “am I to stand here until I get soaked”? The composition ‘as is’ works well.

Dennis A - Long Tail Boat:
That must have been a wonderful experience. Definitely needs the boat to add context.

    Elaine J - Chairs:
The light falling on those beautifully carved chairs is ideal and you have done well to maintain some detail in the windows. Love the textures.

    Geoff C - Moustache Falls:
I’m struggling with the scale of the falls Geoff but I’m not sure that matters. Lots of textures to play with here and it certainly looks cold.

    Julian P - Beech Tree:
Lovely colours and lots of detail throughout in a good composition. A great example of what can be achieved with the M240 even at a fairly high ISO.

    Keith W - Safe Return:
Although the horizon and sky are ideally placed do you really need it as it is very bright in the frame despite balancing the surf in the right foreground? I would be interested to see a crop to letterbox completely removing it. (it's not my image of course.) I love the movement in the figures you have captured.

Malcolm R - The art of tree surgery:
I’m really enjoying subtlety of this film image. The yellow filter has certainly given you great tones in the sky. Very nice.

Mike B - One Man and His Dog: - Mine (It occurs to me that it should maybe entitled ‘extreme social distancing’).

    Phil C - Winter Berries:
I like the composition Phil and the limited palette. I do find the highlights immediately behind the berries and on the right just a touch distracting.

Richard B - Little School House:
That is desolate! A beautiful sky well captured. I do find the house a little to central for my taste but of course have no idea was is just out of shot and that may have dictated the composition.

Tom L - The Road to Milford Sound
Such spectacular scenery. Well composed and exposed. Excellent. A colleague of mine toured New Zealand a year or two back and has several shots in and around this magical area.

    Andre

Impeccable (as always). Good to see you take a place in the image. The colours are really realistic.

    Chris B

An image with title that brightens today’s lockdown. We need humour.

    Dennis A

A fine selection from your elevated viewpoint. I am always amazed how far (and high) folk go to indulge in their hobby.

    Elaine J

So realistic. Colours and lighting just look so natural. Very nicely conceived and carried out.

    Geoff C

For me a puzzle picture as I have found no prop to give me an indication of scale.

    Julian P

    Mine

    Keith W

A simple picture and I guess a feeling of relief for the children’s parents.

    Malcolm R

Brutal as always, but time will be the restorer.

    Mike B

Again a simple picture and a format to go with it. I bet it had more impact full resolution.

    Phil C

Just the right amount of “separation” between the berries and the other foliage. Very well judged.

    Richard B

I just wonder if this was a grab shot from a moving vehicle or a careful composition? I do like the sky. It makes the image.

    Tom L

You are the new Ansel Adams. Contrast just as good as his images, but he might have had something extra in the immediate foreground.
