  1. Elaine J - all of the figures work well together in a pleasing image which would benefit from an increase in brightness and contrast I feel.

Julian P - a nice lead into an interesting seascape with tranquility. May be a slight darkening of the sky may assist.

Keith W - precise composition as always but for me it is cropped a bit to tight at the bottom of the image, otherwise good.

Malcolm R - a great plant study but it looks a bit spiteful.

Mike B - everything leads to the lightship making a good composition with just the right exposure.

Phil C - discarded masks and gloves are becoming an all too common site, a poignant picture.

Philip G - cropping gives added intimacy to this.

    Richard B - excellent!

Vincenzo V - great shot with limited resources.

A beautiful portrait, great light, great colours and eye contact. Lovely.

    Elaine
Looks a little cold, the wetsuit would be essential.

    Julian
A lovely Kodachrome shot, very peaceful. Hope the scanning has made the days fly by!

    Keith
Goodwood is such a great day out, always so much to see and the sounds of a Spitfire are a delight.

    Malcolm
Nicely done, the colours and the texture make you feel you can reach out and touch this.

    Mike
Very well framed, the pools of water lead the eye in nicely to the splash of red on the horizon.

A photo walk sounds like fun, something sadly missed.

    Richard
The outfit is perfect for the setting, and the fact you have remained unobserved adds to the silence of the frame.

    Vincenzo
Such lovely light, and so much beauty in an everyday object. Very nice indeed.

  3. 1. Dennis A. An appealing portrait. Having found out what a lungi is the brightly coloured background makes sense and adds to the meaning of the image. The direct stare into the camera suggests that he is at ease and happy to have his picture taken. The reflections in the eyes are a little distracting but no doubt mirror the market in which he works.

    2. Elaine. The five figures are nicely separated and you have “caught the wave” to advantage, the light unfortunately was not with you and we are left with the impression of a very grey day.

    3. Julian. A beautifully serene near monochrome image. It is good to revisit old work from time to time, I wonder if our current digital files will last as well.

    4. Keith W. You just have to snap a Spitfire when you can and this is a typical air display scene. I like the inclusion of the rusty Austin (a restoration project?) and the Anglia van. The red shirt on the extreme left could be cropped out but the pink litter bin is unavoidable.

    5. Mine.

    6. Mike B. The lightship certainly makes its presence felt in this flat landscape but I get the impression that the main subject of this image is the carefully framed inlet in the foreground.

    7. Phil C. Sign of the times. We hear much about the provision of PPE but nothing about how it is disposed of after use.

    8. Philip G. A clique of street photographers taking a moment off the serious business of searching out their quarry. I like the sun hat entering right and the cap exiting left and the two figures in the centre middle distance. You got the picture while they were nattering.

    9. Richard B. Like me she does not know what to make of it. The coat is the perfect foil to the near monochrome image.

    10. Vincenzo V. A strong graphic image making the most of the early morning/late evening light. The absence of detail in the shadows strengthens the image.

  4. 1) Dennis A. A compelling, environmental portrait, made all the better by the use of a wide aperture to give subject separation. I wonder if this young man is selling the cloth that is in the background.

    2) Elaine J. I like the sombre tones relieved only by the colour of the surf boards.

    3) Julian P. The foreground , seemingly cut off from the sea by the natural rock barrier suggests a refuge from the open sea.The reflection of the clouds adds foreground interest. Is there a ship on the horizon?

    4) Keith W. A special day at Goodwood. I have not been. I wonder if you donned period dress. Perhaps your rangefinder camera attracted interest from others once the display had finished.

    5) Malcolm R. A splash of spring colour on a popular family of cacti. As I recall, mammillarias sometimes flower profusely, those tiny flowers packed tight to the rotund body of the plant. Your picture captures the robust, waxy nature of the flowers.

    6) Mike B. The ship is a little distant to my mind. I want to know more. However, my comment is offset by the effective leading line of the water, which gives foreground interest. The use of the wide angle lens does justice to the wider environmental setting.

    7) Phil C. A sign of the times, Phil. I wonder where that mask has been. Let us hope that it was lost accidentally, perhaps caught by the wind, and not simply abandoned carelessly by its owner.

    8) Philip G. Almost certainly a candid photo, it appears to have been shot from the hip in a chance moment. It is a busy scene, and the use of black & white is effective in eliminating distractions.

    9) My photo.

    10) Vincenzo V. I like this very much. The use of light and colour, the reference to security at a time of viral lockdown. A reminder there is simply no need to leave the home when pursuing photography.

Another very fine portrait, enhanced by an excellent colour palette.

    Elaine J
Perhaps a little more shadow detail would lift this shot - worth trying.

    Julian P
Your scanning certainly proved worthwhile for this shot with its combination of composition and colour.

    Keith W
Oh dear. Now I do feel my age as I used to drive one of those old cars! I certainly enjoyed the trip down memory lane.

    Malcolm R
This shows why the macro facility can be one of the greatest assets of a digital compact camera.

    Mike B
Certainly an interesting location and well worth capturing.

    Phil C
A sad sign for our times - and well spotted of course.

    Richard B
A most effective composition with the figure placed perfectly to my eye: I wonder how effective it would be in mono.

    Vincenzo V
Fine lighting turned this simple composition into a most effective image.

A wondeful and very delicate street portrait. The shallow depth of field creates at the same time connection and separation between the cloth worn by the subject and the ones on display

    Elaine J
Very nice composition. I would probably try enhance the contrast, but it might be difficult, given the light that was available

    Julian P
What I find most amazing in this picture is how it challenges the separation between earth, water and sky. Absolutely wonderful

    Keith W
It must have been an amazing day!
It's difficult to explain with words, but I feel somehow that, although the composition is very nice, the elements in the photo detract from each other a little bit and nothing could be done

    Malcolm R
A very beautiful reminder of the magic of nature in all its forms and sizes.

    Mike B
I like the symbiosis between the lightship and the foreground. It feels like the ship is on its sinuous way way to my eyes

    Phil C
A very strong message about the current times. It's a shame to me that the mask is not more clearly defined in the photo, but I like the leaves' shadow on it

    Philip G
I like how the background expands into the two main characters and the tight cropping. The child walking by adds a strong spark

    Richard B
The image captures very strongly the connection between the subject and the art work. The coat pattern and the art work amplify this connection even more, to the point that it nearly feels that the person is part of the installation

    Dennis A
Super portrait in a great setting.

    Elaine J
Well, she is heading in right direction. A very grey day.

    Julian P
Lovely landscape and the Kodachrome colours look good.

    Malcolm R
I really like this image. The colours are great with lovely detail.

    Mike B
I am feeling the subject/title could be more prominent in the frame and looks an interesting vessel.

    Phil C
An environmental statement for sure. Well spotted - I confess I would have passed it by!

    Philip G
    Nicely caught moment

    Richard B
I think you have the angle spot on here, where we are just able to see her face and hand.

    Vincenzo V
Lovely light and shadow shot. It is interesting what we can find when we have to. Great.

  8. Dennis A - great portrait, the SL 24-90mm certainly shines here, especially with the clarity of his eyes.

Elaine J - nice shot with the exposure being well handled as it would have been very easy to have “blown out” the waves.

Julian P - great landscape from a scanned transparency. The Kodachrome really was superb film.

Keith W - nice image to record the event. Just a pity that the lady’s feet and the car tyre have been cut off.

Malcolm R - very colourful and appealing image. At first I thought it was a “Photoshop’d” image but looking at it closely think it’s an arrangement. Whatever it is, it’s very nice.

Mike B - nice composition with good exposure and detail.

Phil C - great Coronavirus image. I’ve been trying various subjects during the lockdown but wouldn’t have thought of this one. I like the shallow depth of field.

Philip G - great monochrome image and I particularly like the low viewpoint. Great composition and exposure.

Richard B - really like this as I love the way the person stands out against the light background.

Vincenzo V - Love this one, the lighting, exposure and composition are superb. Incredible that you found should a subject within your own flat.

I would not know a lungi if I saw one, but never fear, I would not have had the temerity to get a camera out. Well done Dennis. I wonder how dated an image like this will be? It is good to have.

    Elaine J

This does not look inviting to me, but I am sure the surfers brightened up a dull grey day.

    Julian P

    Keith W

This hardly looks contemporary but it is. It appeals to me very much although I am a person who would not choose to attend these events.

    Malcolm R

Must be a very versatile camera to produce such an impeccably sharp rendition and the colours are great.

    Mike B

Looks a very pleasant place to spend some time. A good image too to take one there.

    Phil C

Part of a coronovirus essay I guess. A worthy addition to the many from those recording this strange time.

    Philip G

An odd moment for an image and I wonder how apt the title is. One could imagine you knew them.

    Richard B

A thoughtful moment. Very quiet and stationary.

    Vincenzo V

Great, There is a fascination in this design of the play of light.

  10. Dennis A - Lungi Salesman
Beautiful colours and great eye contact. A very appealing portrait.

    Elaine J - How do I surf:
Ideal separation of the figures. Maybe a tweak to the brightness and contrast would lift the image.

Julian P - Sgurr of Eigg:
I like the limited depth of focus here, which enhances the depth. The reflections of clouds in the water adds to the foreground interest.

    Keith W - Goodwood:
An evocative scene. It’s a pity we have lost the lady’s feet and the bottom of the Austin’s tyres.

    Malcolm R - Mammillaria:
Nicely framed and beautiful colours. A good example of the genre.

    Mike B - The Lightship:
    Mine

    Phil C - Discarded mask:
It’s a poignant message that might have been stronger if the mask was more visible and identifiable as such.

Philip G - How many megapixels:
I like the framing and clarity in this excellent monochrome image.

    Richard B - Anatomy:
An excellent capture. The subject being in colour contrasts so well with the monochromatic background.

    Vincenzo V - Choice:
A well conceived and well executed image. Very different and very enjoyable.
