'Greeting David' - M240, 50mm Summilux
The shot was taken during a trip down to Chamonix last summer where this guy’s girlfriend is eagerly welcoming him home, close to the cut off time, as a finisher in the Ultra Trail du Mont Blanc.
171km through 3 countries involving climbs totalling 10,000 metres. The start was 6pm on the Friday and the cut off was 5pm Sunday - the last finisher came in with 2 minutes to spare - this guy had about 15 minutes left on the clock - oh and the winner completed the course in under 21 hours.

Misty Dawn at Cowdray Castle
M10 + Summilux 28mm
Taken a couple of weeks ago when it was still cold and misty, I’d woken up early and seen the lovely light, jumped out of bed and rushed out to take this shot which is v close to my house.

I thought this made for a rather amusing photo, the girls head is obscuring the letter G whist she was playing on her iPhone possibly an APP ?

  1. Alan T - A well framed shot, the shadow under the crane adds a nice touch.

Keith W - I like the deep blacks on this and the contrasting copper pipers mixed with the steam, looks like the driver is enjoying himself.

Malcolm R - Nicely spotted, a quiet moment in very good light.

Michael B - Great emotion, caught at just the right moment. Sounds like a gruelling race!

Mike H - Very eerie, the perfect setting for a ghost story. Lovely picture.

Mick M - Good to see some more film shots from the SL2. This has lots of detail and crisp whites, very nicely done.

Nitin C - A great pose well caught, the reflections in the window add to the interest in this one.

    Mine

Richard B - Doesn’t look like this car will be going anywhere soon. I like the way nature is reclaiming the space so readily invaded by this old car.

Shaun D - Very clever and well worked… nice shot and a timely comment on society.

Tom L - Amazing heavenly light, just off the shore at Lands End, a great landscape photo with lovely heavy tones, loads of drama.

  2. 1. Alan T. The pose shows the spectacular wingspan and crest to full advantage although the head (and especially the eye) is lost to us. Highlights on the topside of the wing blown?

    2. Keith W. Lots of fine detail here showing the complexity and weight of the engine. The driver and sight of some of the controls inside the cab is a nice touch. The deep shadow at the base does rather let the picture down, if it cannot be lightened perhaps a crop is the answer?

    3. Me.

    4. Michael B. What some folk do for fun. This is a happy picture, I like the fact that the pair are in step and totally engaged with each other. The sense of achievement - and relief that it is all over - is nicely captured.

    5. Mike H. The light and mist has given a rather mysterious and spooky rendering of the castle, a wonderfully atmospheric image.

    6. Mick M. Very simple subject matter, very difficult to capture properly on film and you have done well with crisp detail in the snow and the burnt timber.

    7. Nitin C. The way the reflections overlay the dancers is intriguing and makes it a puzzle to decide just what is inside and what is outside. The fact that the girl’s finger is pointing the same was as the repeated one way sign is the icing on the cake.

    8. Phil C. I hope you had your earplugs handy that day it looks very noisy. The message comes over loud and clear - the answer unfortunately does not.

    9. Richard B. Soft light has rendered the wreck well. The hard lines of the car submitting to the encroachment of the brambles tells the story of the gradual return to nature. The use of monochrome here is interesting, I imagine rusty red tones in the car against the green of the leaves would be a good colour combination but you have chosen to dispense with the distraction of colour. Is that a cat peering out from under the bonnet?

    10. Shaun D. Well seen, positioning is everything and you have it just right. People on their phones is a popular subject these days and is becoming commonplace but the ambiguous message that comes across here places the image on a totally different level. A first class street picture.

    11. Tom L. The sun filtering through the clouds makes the picture, placing spotights on the water giving it texture and relieving the near silhouette of the rocks. A very dramatic seascape.

  3. 1) Alan T. A fast response is needed when a bird momentarily opens its wings - your timing was spot on! The action adds interest. I like the detail retained in the contrasty underwing - the black and white feathering is nicely captured..

    2) Keith W. An attractive image of the engine under steam with just a hint of context - place - at the top of the frame.

    3) Malcolm R. I like street images - those short-lived, little moments that sometimes pass us by. You have done well to avoid your own shadow, ensuring it does not interruptthe scene.

    4) Michael B. Well captured. Full of emotion after the trials of the event. The viewer is left feeling like a voyeur, sharing a fleeting, private moment in a close relationship. The 50mm Summilux gives just enough context to enhance the scene.

    5) Mike H. Wonderful - magical - minimal. What more can I say?

    6) Mick M. A high contrast shot with detail nicely retained. Looks as if a thaw is on the verge of setting in.

    7) Nitin C. A busy scene full of interest, and through glass - the deliberate facial expression, the pose, the energy in the male figure and the reflections of the street. I wonder if a light crop at the top of the frame would make it even better.

    8) Phil C. A great documentary image - history well captured. Full of action and feeling. The perspective of time will throw further light on the action taken by the school children at a time when our government is seemingly neglecting issues of massive global importance.

    9) Richard B. My photo.

    10) Shaun D. A street photo with apt juxtaposition - well observed.

    11) Tom L. Very atmospheric. Amazing light - well composed - every element is important to the composition as the next. Nothing is superfluous.

As last month, I’m sorry but wildlife and birds in particular are not something I shoot, although this is a nice shot it lacks a little interest/action with the eyes looking downwards. The shot is well composed and perfectly in focus though - something that cant be easy with wildlife?
    Keith W
A really nice shot with great colours and a balanced composition. As another commented, it’s a pity the under shadow is there.
    Malcolm R
Nice street scene captured and makes you wonder what they were talking about?
    Michael B
Great shot, full of action and interest. Good tones and well composed…makes me envious of the days when I might have been the runner.

It’s been many years 50+ since I used film with anything but a point and shoot. I think you’ve seen and captured this relatively simple scene and turned it into an interesting one - well done.
    Nitin C
Again, you’ve captured a nice moment full of life, with good colour and detail.
    Phil C
Yes, a good street demo - until last Saturday, not enough of them I say. Plenty of interest in life, and good colour too.
    Richard B
A well seen, photo, with a good range of B+W tones. Makes you think..what kind of car, what happened, how did it get there...
    Shaun D
Lovely modern street photo of a familiar scene these days - I found it interesting, well balanced and peaceful.
    Tom L
Another great sea scene, with loverly B+W tones, and well handled highlights. Very nice

  5. Alan T Crested Crane at Pensthorpe: Good sharp image with a long lens it’s a shame the cranes face is a little obscured and the cropping is a bit too tight for me.

Keith W Waiting. Nice nostalgic feel it takes me back to being a kid. I can almost smell the smoke and hear the whistle.

Malcolm R “Morning Coffee” The interesting thing for me about this one is the chap talking to the two ladies drinking coffee and I wonder if he knows them as he passes them everyday whilst they take a coffee or if its just a one of casual conversation.

Michael B 'Greeting David' You have captured a really nice moment of support and affection between this couple and it is nice to hear story behind the photo. Nice sharp image with a manual focus lens and a fast (well reasonably) moving subject.

Mike H Misty Dawn at Cowdray Castle: Lovely shot Mike and well worth getting out of bed early for. I had assumed it was filters until I read the description of the shot, nice one.

Mick M Burnt Log- Interesting contrast between the textured log and the freshly fallen snow, I think the Silvermax is a B&W film but I doubt that with a colour film we would have seen anything other than black and white.

Nitin C One Way: Great observation and spotting the reflections along with good timing go to make a cracking shot.

Phil C Students protesting against climate change: You got right in there Phil up and close and it really makes for a powerful image. You can sense the urgency and passion these young people have for a subject some of our elders appear to ignore.

Richard B"Returning to nature” Its well on its way back Richard and B&W suits this shot well for me.

Shaun D “There’s an AP for Everything” Mine

Tom L Lands End; What a super shot of the light rays bursting through the clouds and I am not sure if it’s the lens or can I actually see the curvature of the earth on the sea?

  6. Alan T - Crested Crane: Interesting study of the Crane and particularly the crest, but a pity the wing edges are burnt out.

Keith W - Waiting: An evocative picture of a bygone age. The harsh shadow at the bottom is a distraction but I’m sure that there was little you could do about it other than crop.

Malcom R - Morning Coffee: A well caught moment although there isn’t a lot of animation in your subjects.

Mike B - Greeting David: Mine

Mike H - Misty Dawn: A beautiful capture. Very atmospheric.

Mick M - Burnt Log: Nicely composed and exposed with plenty of texture. Maybe not the most exciting of images.

Nitin C - One Way: Well spotted and exposed.

Phil C - Student Protest: I suppose we could ask what you are doing in the middle of all those girls Phil, but you have certainly caught the action and mood.

Richard B - Returning to nature: Lot’s of mid-tones here. Maybe a step or two back to give more context might have worked but we obviously have no idea what is out of shot.

Shaun D - There’s an App for everything: Extremely well seen and composed. Is it a set up or purely opportunistic? Not that it matters a jot.

Tom L - Lands End: Bags of atmosphere in this shot which works well as a monochrome.

    1. Hi Michael B, It was an opportunity that presented itself on the streets of Tokyo. I just hoped she wouldn't walk off or that the crowds would obscure my view before I managed to get my camera fired up.
