"Ah, Lunchtime'" - On a lighter note for the December Festive Season, this was a recent entry in my local club monthly on the theme of Triptychs. Perhaps not complying with the technically correct definition but it did get the intended laugh from the audience. I’m afraid I don’t take these competitions seriously enough these days. Taken with a Panasonic FT4 with Leica lens at a garden centre near Knutsford, Cheshire. It was a rather lifelike and sized mechanised beast. (Standard 1400 x 1050pixels club size you will note Dunk.)

4) David F
The Red Arrows Memorial for a pilot who lost his life after a display there. Taken on an M240 + 50mm Summilux f/1.4

6) Duncan
ILLUMINATED ORCHID Leica C compact (raffle prize TLS AGM Weekend 2014). Backlit via Cobra lightbox to reveal translucence; frontal / side fill-in light via Hancock lightbox and aluminium foil reflectors mounted on recycled polystyrene blocks.

Note - Dunk explains how he created this image in the Circle Notes pages - http://tls-circled.blogspot.co.uk/p/circle-notes-2016.html

You're Never Alone With A Strand': M240, CV 1.4/35
Another taken at Canary Wharf last summer. I hate the notice fixed to the railing adjacent to the smoker but I tend not to do much editing on my street shots. Mind you that would test my cloning skills in any case.

11) Mike E
Air Raid Warning: Happy snappers on Bill Palmer’s 500px photo walk in Guildford contemplate the River Wey in blissful ignorance of impending doom. Right in the firing line is l-forum stalwart Farnz, fortunately wearing his flat cap. Taken with Leica SL and 24-90mm Vario-Elmarit, f/3.6 @ 1/200s, focal length 50mm.

13) Rob

14) Shaun
The Jester: At the moment I am enjoying the challenge of “street photography” requiring quick wits, a close proximity with the subject, and speedy camera adjustments/manual focusing (manual focusing for me anyway). This was taken at a Christmas Market last week with an M240 and a 50mm Summicron. I was amused that the “Jester” appeared to be about to insert something into his nose.

15) Sky

Westport-Achill Greenway, Big Sky
This part of the world has 'big skies' created by its proximity to the Atlantic Ocean. My inspiration for this was the painting style of Paul Henry who often included such skies in his work. Leica 24mm Elmar on a Fujifilm X-Pro 2

Superb rendition BUT blurred fingers yes but not the face!

    2) Bernd.
Superb in every way. I was amazed this was taken on a 50mm-thought it was a much wider view

    3) Bill
Good bit of fun but that's about it I'm afraid

    4)David F
Unusual to see the Red Arrows in mono but very effective indeed. Truly great rendition of a sad memorial.

    5) N/A

    6)Duncan
Excellent if a little washed out

    7) Elaine
Very evocative and lovely rendition-great use of colour and light- I'd hang it on my wall

    8) Keith
Great composition perfectly rendered-perfect balance of light and colour

    9) Malcolm
Good technically but does not do much else for me

    10) Mike B
    Very well rendered

    11 Mike E.
    One for the family album

    12) Phil
Superb in every way-truly great shot

    13) N/A

    14) Shaun
Good rendition but feel it would work better in colour. Fun pic though

    15) Sky
Superb shot-love the grain and aura of something bad about to happen

    16) Theodore
Excellent capture and great colour-nice bit of reportage

    17) N/A

    19)Tom
Well rendered and composed family shot

    20) William
Excellent cloudscape-something quite sinister about it but in a good way! Nice work

  2. 1 Alan ‘Walkway at Holkham’ Composition, dynamics, motion blur, and musician’s expression – all excellent. But unfortunately image is not sharp where it matters i.e. the eyes – and the guitar body’s highlighting could be toned down.

2 Bernd ‘Mountain View’ Overall a very pleasing composition and the misty hills look superb - but the sky could benefit from toning down a little. Top left tree tops slightly distracting and could be cropped out or cloned out to good effect.

3 Bill ‘Ah lunchtime’ A fun picture; technically excellent and very well arranged / composed. Kids would love it – could make a good greetings card.

4 David F ‘Red Arrows Memorial’ Excellent record of a difficult subject conveying illusion of scale better than the original.

6 Mine. Circle Notes illustrate lighting set-up.

7 Elaine ‘Love my Umbrella’ Pleasing silhouette but the highlights are too bright and could be toned down to good effect.

8 Keith ‘Autumn’ Autumn colour conveyed well; a very pleasing composition. On another occasion maybe a figure in the doorway might add a little more interest.

9 Malcolm ‘Timeworn Face’ A fair record but not particularly interesting. Has potential as a composite e.g. crop and add a protruding arm doing something funky (chin scratching?). Nothing wrong with the Panasonic.

10 Mike B ‘’You’re never Alone With A Strand’ I remember the advert (1960 ish) but the title does not really match up to this particular ‘lonely lady’ scene. Maybe a closer viewpoint and different pose could have produced a stronger story.

11 Mike E ‘Air Raid Warning’ Hope Pete’s cap survived; can now put a face to the name. A fun record image worthy of posting on TLF if not there already.

12 Phil C ‘Birds in Flight at Anglesey Abbey’ Technically and pictorially, an excellent minimalist nocturnal image.

13 Rob ‘Ullswater Cumbria’ Unfortunately image is spoilt by the several ghosting flare spots. The sky could benefit from toning down and the shadow detail could be lifted to good effect. A graduated filter to tone down the sky might have produced a better result and shading the LHS outside the lens’ F.O.V. might have reduced the flare / ghosting.

14 Shaun ‘The Jester’ Technically excellent as regards exposure and main subject sharpness but pictorially not so exciting; as a street scene lacks a sufficiently strong story. But I guess he’s vaping? ‘Vape-speak’ and all the technicalities of vaping are a whole new culture not on everyone’s radar.

15 Sky ‘Kirstone Pass Cumbria’ The dynamics of the flow of the wall are pleasing but the lighting and lack of sky detail and shadow detail on this occasion does not create a sufficiently striking image.

16 Theodore ‘Dali inspired artwork’ Technically a superb record i.e. exposure, tilted composition dynamics, and excellent D.O.F. … but the subject is ‘acquired taste.’

18 Tony G ‘Boating Lake – Jardin du Luxembourg Paris. Technically excellent exposure with good D.O.F. Not a particularly exciting image – but for a family, a memorable picture.

19 William ‘Westport-Achill Greenway. Big Sky’. Latter part of title says it all, but the top L.H.S. corner’s vignetting is noticeable. Skyscape a little too dominant – thus might benefit from a slight crop.

The last Circle D round of 2016 and several super images in contention for the top three. I wish you all a very enjoyable Christmas and lots of success in 2017. And I wonder what Leica Camera AG has up its sleeve for us next year?

Best wishes & Happy New Year

  3. The proportions in the 'big sky' photo of mine are deliberate. Some may like them, some may not.

  4. There is no story.....its just someone I observed in a crowd and I found them interesting.

  5. 1. Alan. A good record of the gig which always have difficult lighting conditions. It may be my screen, but darkening it down improves it for me. A pity we cannot see his eyes.

2.Bernd. Beautiful recession and tones. I think it may be improved by cropping top and bottom. The sky is competing with the mist and mountains. I am jealous nonetheless.

    3

    4. David F. This has great impact, It would have been a great straight shot but the treatment adds something to it. I’m distracted by the uneven border/framing though.

    6. Duncan. Time consuming to set up but for me this is an excellent end result. Not to everyones taste but an important area of photography. The explanation in the notes was a bonus.

    7. Elaine. A very moody image but unusually for Elaine's, this one does nothing for me.

    8. Keith. I like the composition, subjects and the colours but there is just something missing to make it a really stand out. Perhaps it is a figure in the shadows.

    9. Malcolm. I’ll second that there is nothing wrong with the Panasonic. As it is, this is a pleasant, sharp well exposed and composed record shot. A quick change to monochrome in Nik FX software can change its character completely.

    10. Mike B. A moment well seen and captured. I like the framing and the way you’ve tried as well as you can to put the background out of focus on a bright day.

    11. Mike E. A good record of the outing which I sure all those there would enjoy seeing. For me a tighter all round crop would strengthen it, keeping the pigeon(?) in the frame of course.

    12. Phil. This is pleasantly different. Well framed and exposed there is no avoiding some highlights burning out.

    13. Rob. Could be a classic Rolleiflex shot from a bygone era. It's a pleasant record image nicely framed but it looks a little soft to me and so looses impact. That huge piece of glass seems to have picked up some dust which is causing distracting flare spots.

    14. Shaun. The main subject is nicely isolated but I’m not sure the right moment has been caught. Street photos generally have a low hit rate so you have to just stick at it. It looks like a good place for it.

    15. Sky. Clearly you saw a picture here but I’m afraid I’m unable to enjoy it. It all looks soft to me but may be because of the small file size the detail is not coming across.

    16. Theodore. A well exposed record of the artwork. Can’t say that I’m impressed with the subject matter. Unusual choice of shutter speed and aperture.

    17

    18. Tony G. A well framed and captured event for the family album.

    19. William. An attractive example of a ‘big sky', the sweep of the cloud layers making it. It just had to be photographed. I’d be tempted to lighten the dark foreground slightly.

  6. 1) Alan
The spotlight illuminates the red hair perfectly and you can feel the intensity f the music through his concentration. A slightly lower microphone would have made it even better.

    2) Bernd
Wow. The depth of the mountains and way it echoes the clouds in the sky is just perfect, great use of black and white too. I know it is cheating, but I’d have been tempted to remove the branches entering the frame at sky level top right.

    3) Bill
It’s good to push the envelope and this certainly does that. Perhaps an animated gif next time? These would work well in that format. The whitle outline works well.

    4) David F
Had to look twice at this one. Nicely framed the arrows seemingly heading to the heavens, black and white a good choice.

    5) David K

    6) Duncan
Beautiful, well worth all that effort! I have to confess to never having the patience or indeed skill to do this sort of work. The explanation in the Notes page is a good idea.

    7) Elaine
There is something wonderful about this – the pose is perfect, the subtle colours – would make a beautiful print for the wall.

    8) Keith
Sitting here with the rain pouring down on a very grey day this splash of autumn is a welcome sight for the eyes.

    9) Malcolm
Nice clean lines make maximum use of the space in the frame.

    10) Mike B
The figure stands out well from the background which is a good achievement given the amount of lines there are in the architecture. The title adds to the image too.

    11) Mike E
A gaggle of snappers, nice one – hope the trip was a success despite what looks like fairly poor weather.

    12) Me

    13) Rob
A frame from Swallows and Amazons perhaps? I like the idea of the boathouse merging into the foliage, the scene of some great adventures.

    14) Shaun
It’s a fun picture, with questions as to why he is wearing that hat, and as you say the cigarette or whatever it is near his nose. The child’s lack of interest in the jester adds to it as well, seemingly happier looking at his reflection or perhaps for goldfish?

    15) Sky
Clever use of the wall, the way it merges with the landscape. It’s a barrier to the freedom of the hills beyond, but at the same time offers tactile appeal.

    16) Theodore
An interesting frame, one that captures the Daliesque vision.

    17) Tom

    18) Tony G
Caught at the perfect moment, the girl reaching out. Will she overstretch? Or will she have to wade out to collect her boat. Interesting story and nicely framed removing other distractions.

    19) William
There is nothing like a big sky to lift the spirits, even in pictorial form. Very nice, the small white house fronts lift this as well, nature bearing down on the planet.

    1) Alan - I don’t mind the blur in the arm/hand as it does portray the action. Shame that the mic was in his eye though.

    2) Bernd - The image has a good appeal for me. The sky is competing with the misty valleys a touch though, so perhaps losing a good chunk at the top would concentrate the view and in addition remove the overhanging top left branches.

    3) Bill - A fun collage.

    4) David F - Good control of exposure and tonality.

    5)

    6) Duncan - Like the idea, maybe a touch more light from the rear would emphasize the veining in the petals a little more.

    7) Elaine - Some element work but it doesn’t combine completely for me I’m afraid.

    8) Keith - Good rendition of Autumn colour with the highlights just about held on this sunny day.

    9) Malcolm - Not sure if a landscape crop would work better giving more room for the shadow on the left to flow. Needs a little more punch to bring out the detail I feel.

    10) Mike B - I’m only just getting into ‘street’ work myself so feel a bit reluctant to say too much, however I think on a technical point the whites need upping a little. I like the lead-in from the left with the railings.

    11) Mike E - What a variety of cameras on show and the pigeon well caught in the shot.

    12) Phil - Very difficult to control the highlights without resorting to multiple exposures. I like the feel of the shot with the branches fading away into the blackness.

    13) Rob - Lacking critical sharpness on the jetty/boat house and the light blobs are a distraction for me I’m afraid.

    14) Shaun - Good rendering in monochrome with the correct spread of tones. The background although out of focus is distracting me from the central character, maybe darkening the background a little would help.

    15) Sky - A good rugged scene, shame that the focus is off and the detail (if there was any) is missing in the sky. As with Rob’s shot I’d be interested to know what settings were used.

    16) Theodore - Good exposure and framing. As a record of someone else’s art it works.

    17)

    18) Mine - Not a family shot but a quickly captured frame of a young girl having fun with boats as I walked though these gardens in Paris.

    19) William - Moody and then some! I like the sweep of cloud funnelling in from the left.

  8. 1 Alan.
A good record shot, like the blurred hand but the mike is a problem.

    2 Bernd.
Nice composition but the highlights are a little ‘burnt out’.

    3. Bill.
A little to ‘abstract’ for me.

    4 Dave F.
    Mine.

    5 David K.
    No photo

    6 Duncan
    Very good composition and detail.

    7 Elaine.
Sorry but the composition doesn’t work for me, the umbrella is lost.

    8 Keith
    Beautiful photo, superb colours.

    9 Malcolm.
The gargoyle looks how I feel at times, grumpy!!! Shame to see the blocked up window too.

    10 Mike B.
Great shot but oh so fifties with the Stand, I can hear the tune now!

    11 Mike E
Shame the pigeon is lost in the greenery.

    12 Phil.
    Great shot love it.

    13 Rob.
Nice record shot, spoilt by the spots and the washed out colour.

    14 Shaun.
Not sure if I like this or not very ‘cluttered’ background, like the expression on the child though.

    15 Sky
Nice record shot, shame about the lack of detail in the sky.

    16 Theodore.
Super photo of the original but the question is ‘is it mine or someone else’s work?’.

    17 Tom.
    No image.

    18 Tony.
Super photo, for me a RHS crop of the other boat and slightly more detail in the HS would work well.

    19 William.
Another superb landscape. But not as good as usual.

  9. 1. Alan: Walkway.
Nice lighting and captured at the peak of the action.

    2. Bernd: Mountain View .
Very nice black and white landscape. I would have cropped out the branches on the top left of the picture.

    3. Bill: Ah Lunchtime.
You are right not to take camera club competitions too seriously. A fine amusing shot with the details well handled and processed. Pixels noted!

    4. David F: Red Arrows.
Works very well in black and white. At first glance I thought that this was a photo of the Red Arrows in action.

    5. David K: No image

    6. Duncan : ILLUMINATED ORCHID.

Beautifully lit shot of a lovely Orchid. Your technique is perfect to my eyes.

    7. Elaine: Umbrella Lady.
Very well seen and captured. That umbrella is in exactly the right spot.

    8. Keith: Autumn.
Lovely composition and colours. It is hard to capture the ‘autumn peak’ but you have certainly done so here.

    9. Malcolm: Timeworn Face.
Nice composition of the face and window. The white surrounding areas also help to lift the image.

    10. Mike B: You’re never alone etc.
I would not have noticed the notice if you had not mentioned it. If only it had said ‘no smoking’! Nicely composed and captured.

    11. Mike E : Air Raid Warning.
It took me a while to get this. I would have cropped in on the pigeon with a title like this. The bridge looks wonderful and begs for a wide-angle shot from below.

    12. Phil: Birds in Flight.
Lovely lighting display, well captured with a great sense of movement.

    13. Rob: Ullswater, Cumbria.
Lovely tranquil scene. Are those water spots on the front of the lens? If so they are easily fixed in Lightroom.

    14. Shaun: The Jester.
Is that a ‘vaping’ pipe? People usually wear those jester hats to say ‘I am not serious and I am out to have fun’. He seems to be more into his vaping than child minding, though. Lots going on here. Nicely seen.

    15. Sky: Kirkstone Pass, Cumbria.
Nice shapes here. It looks just like the walls we have on our side of the Irish Sea.

    16. Theodore: Dali.
Nice display and you have captured the composition and lighting very well.

    17. Tom: No image.

    18. Tony G. Boating Lake.

Brings back childhood memories. At least this one cannot get away. I have memories of watching a favourite toy boat sailing away across the Irish Sea in the direction of Scotland. Beautifully captured.

    19. William : Mine.

  10. 1) Alan - Walkway at Holkham
As a former Theatre Manager I can attest to the difficulties in pulling off a good concert shot. I like this but it is such a pity that the the mic takes centre stage.
    2) Bernd - Mountain View
Great depth in this shot but I’ll join others in wishing the trees top left were not there. Maybe a letterbox crop would strengthen the image even more?
    3) Bill - Ah Lunchtime
I’m pleased I’m not the only one to rock the boat in club competitions and can well imagine this being well received by members, if not the judge.
    4) David - Red Arrows Memorial
A good record shot that works in mono. Do you think that rotating the image so the ‘trails’ are on the diagonal would create a more dynamic feel?
    5) David K
    6) Duncan - Illuminated Orchid
I really like this and am very grateful for the explanation as to how you achieved it.
    7) Elaine - Love my umbrella
I find the subject slightly lost here which is a pity. Maybe a tighter crop losing the bright area to the right of the tree and above the horizontal branch might work?
    8) Keith - Autumn
Beautiful colours but the bright and bland foreground weakens the shot for me. I would be inclined to lose it.
    9) Malcom - Timeworn Face
An interesting idea but there is too much white space top and bottom for me. Maybe a landscape format would work better?
    10) Mine
    11) Mike E - Air Raid Warning
Excellent timing, although the pigeon is a little lost against the background.
    12) Phil - Birds in Flight
An unusual image that works well.
    13) Rob - Ullswater
Ah the boathouse at Ullswater! A little lost on this occasion. Pity about the flare spots. (?)
    14) Shaun - The Jester
The problem with signs or lettering is that they do catch the eye, taking one away from the main subject which is in this case quite interesting. It might help to tone the sign down in post.
    15) Sky - Kirkstone Pass
I’m not sure what has happened here Sky as the image looks very fuzzy on my screen, yet I’m not convinced that it is out of focus.
    16) Theodore - Dali
Beautifully exposed image of this exhibition piece of art.
    17) Tom - no image
    18) Tony - Boating Lake
Nice action shot but I agree with the above comment that you could happily lose the boat top right and maybe just a tad off the bottom too.
    19) William - Big Sky
It certainly is. I might be tempted to try and lift the shadows slightly in the foreground to give just a little more detail.

Yet another interesting set of differing images. So hard to rank!

    ReplyDelete
  11. 1 Alan. Movement in the hand gives a sense of the action. Background to the left works well but it is rather untidy to the right and I would have been tempted to remove the coat-hanger etc. The relative positions of the microphone the singer and you are unfortunate but presumably unless he steps back there is nothing to be done.

2 Bernd. Magical misty tones in the hills/mountains. The dark pines take care of the foreground nicely hiding the middle ground. Good sky as well except for those branches top left.

3 Bill. Festive Season Bill ? What do you do for an encore? Seriously though it is great fun and I like the aura around the heads. It is surprising what you find in garden centres these days, I remember when they sold plants.

4 David F. What I like about this is the absence of scale, it could be 6 feet or 60 feet high. The cloud background is very appropriate.

    5 David K. No Image.

6 Dunc. White on white was a bold choice but it works well. The multiple flower heads, all at different angles, give a far better impression of their structure than a single bloom would have done.

7 Elaine. Curious lighting and enigmatic subject matter. The more I look at this the more I like it.

8 Keith. Sunlight bringing out the best of the acer’s colour which contrasts well with the more somber tones of the building.

    9 Me

10 Mike B. Not quite as I remember the old ad but nevertheless the message comes across. The slightly out of focus background sets the scene without overpowering the main subject.
11 Mike E. Are they playing pooh sticks?

12 Phil. A striking image and very different. The “V” shape formed by the birds from your chosen angle leads the eye to the subdued lighting on the branches.

13 Rob. I feel this needs darkening on the left and lightening on the right where it seems rather gloomy. The dust/ flare/water droplets are not helping.

14 Shaun. Anyone with headgear like that deserves a photo. I’m not convinced you have caught the right moment although the little lad spotting goldfish is a bonus.

15 Sky. It is difficult to get an out of focus image with a 21mm lens, so I am wondering if the problem of unsharpness lies elsewhere (maybe a too slow shutter speed?). A little more detail in the bottom right is needed.

16 Theodore. Weird and certainly of the Dali school. The original may have been a picture but the shadows suggest a 3D installation, either way the inclusion of an onlooker would give an idea of scale and also put your own stamp on the image which at present is simply a (very good) reproduction.

    17 Tom. No image.

18 Tony G. A well caught moment, the dynamics of the girl’s stance as she stretches for her boat, the reflection on the water and the second boat in the top corner all combine in a simple but very satisfying composition.

19 William. Big skies are an essential feature of flat landscapes and this is looks pretty flat. The foreground is quite dark which makes the three tips of the gable ends stand out all the more. Nice light on the water on the far side of the bay. Top left seems overcorrected.

Seasons Greetings to One and All.

  12. 1) Alan
Excellent action shot, however the mike does get in the way of the face and I find myself wishing the jacket and guitar had a big more color saturation to contrast against the dark background.

    2) Bernd
Marvelous photograph; would have had less impact in color, thus perfect for B/W on the M9! Nitty detail: the trees upper left corner distract.

    3) Bill
Definitely lighthearted, and good fun to experiment with the possibilities offered by digital photography.

    4) David F
A very interesting and tasteful memorial, taken at a realistic angle that made me do a double take as if these were in actual flight. Excellent.

    5) David K
    no picture

    6) Duncan
Another of Duncan’s amazing flower studies. Lovely. The subtle variations in gray and white come out very well indeed.

    7) Elaine
A very artistic and magical shot; the only tiny commentary is about the out of focus area lower left, that somehow pulls my eye slightly away from the lady.

    8) Keith
Warm and lovely mood of a wonderful autumn day epitomized by the red leaves contrasting with the ancient stonework. Beautiful.

    9) Malcolm
A simple yet very effective shot with delicate and subtle shades of white, gray and brown.

    10) Mike B
The notice does not bother me very much because the lady’s dotted dress is interesting enough against the office blocks around her.

    11) Mike E
An oblivious moment of serenity before the storm. They would all look right at home getting out of a tourist bus in Tokyo as counterpoint to the Japanese who visit London!

    12) Phil
Very interesting night shot. Must have been tricky to get the exposure right with these bright lights in total darkness. At the very first instance I thought they were fireworks or flowers,

    13) Rob
I find the entire picture very hazy (perhaps due to the low lying sun?) and the several light circles (4-5 on the right and 3 on the mountain) very disruptive – otherwise a charming viewpoint.

    14) Shaun
Excellent street photography shot, beautifully executed in B/W.

    15) Sky
Beautiful detail; however for me, there is nothing sharply in focus anywhere, which is off putting. Feels like something went awry during the digital processing?

Marvelous moment; I find the angles of the basin against the framing interesting too. Well done, in the way the photograph tells a story in such a compact manner.

I know this angled view; we have the same here in Denmark, where you always seem to see only the rooves of the houses due to the rolling landscape. Beautiful natural landscape shot with great colors and a sumptuous sky.

Impressed by the colours in difficult lighting. You did well with the white balance.

    2.Bernd

Another lovely location and composition. Love the recession of the mountains.

Very strong image. Probably liked a bit more detail in trees and agree with comment about foreground.

Very much like the textures captured in the white , helped by the sidelighting. Good image.

Shame lady isn’t a meter to her left, as you would have lost your notice and her head would be clear of blockwork. If only...

Well caught moment - hope it missed. At least Pete had a cap on.

    12. Phil

    Fantastic. Great exposure. Well composed.

Stunning location. Think I would lighten the greenery slightly.

    14. Shaun
Good subject. Guess would be better with guys hand lower.

    15. Sky
A good b&w subject. Perhaps needs some work to lower right.

Great image. The position of her left arm is perfect for me. Shame we are nervous about taking harmless and lovely shots like this in the UK.

    19. William
I love big skies - especially with lovely light as here. Great.

Happy New Year to all and may the light work for you in 2017
