November 2015

There are 16 images to enjoy this month, and a good range of subjects as always.  Would members please vote and comment as usual.

1) Alan
Moon River, Pensthorpe, Norfolk: Leica V Lux 3, Ff/ at 70mm Focal, 1/640sec ISO 160 - No other post process except to convert to B&W for a change

2) Bernd
Autumn: It's autumn time and therefore I post a colour picture. I shot it three year ago. Last week I tried to make it again but unfortunately the two trees on the left hand side were felled and for me something was missing there. So I post this "old" photograph made with Leica M9, a beautiful Zeiss Biogon 2,8/28mm lens and a 10-stop-ND filter, 250 seconds of exposure time.

3) Bill
Conference sideshow’ Taken in Manchester outside the Conservative Party Conference in early October. A Fuji XE-2 camera with a 1957 35mm f3.5 Summaron lens was used.

4) David F
Great Dorset Steam Fair: M(240) + 50mm Summilux

5) David K
‘Cinderella’s Coach Crash - Dismaland’ - by Banksy - taken during the recent Banksy Art Project at the Tropicana in Weston-super Mare. Thought provoking with obvious reminders of the dreadful August ’97 car crash in Paris. It was taken with my Leica D-Lux (Type 109) with its DC Vario-Summilux 10.9-34mm f1.7-2.8 asph Lens - exposed for 1/4 second at f/5.0 (ISO 5000). The room was virtually dark throughout with very little ancillary light, so the performance of the D-Lux in the conditions without flash was notable.

6) Elaine
Stalker Castle: Lumix ZF100 and Leica lens

7) Jim
Fools and horses

8) Keith
Sognefjord, Norway, Leica M(240), 90mm Summicron ISO 1600

9) Malcolm
North Beach - Whitby: Leica M2 with 35mm Summaron on FP4

10) Mike
The Mad Hatter, sans Alice who was spending a penny, outside Piccadilly Circus Underground station. Taken with a Leica Monochrom (M246) and 50mm Apo-Summicron-M ASPH (f/5.6 at 1/250s, processed in Silver Efex Pro 2). The ingenuity and industry of street performers reaches new levels.

11) Phil
Maserati 250F waiting to join the track. Apologies for another Scalextric image!

12) Philip G
Finishing Touches and the shooting details are M(240) 35mm Summarit - 1/250 @ f.11.

13) Rob
Above the stage: Rose Theatre Kingston, Leica X2

14) Sky
Out late downtown: Leica DLux 10

15) Theodore - Away until end of 2015

16) Tom
Taj Hotel, Mumbai, India: M9 fitted with the 28-35-50 Tri-Elmar set to 50mm

17) Tony - No image this month

Dancing 3 In Vinales, Cuba: This was taken at a little country dance show in Vinales, Cuba. The skill of the performers was both natural and astonishing, but not surprising, given that many of the dances to be seen in ballrooms around the world originated in Cuba and neighbouring countries. Lumix LX 100 with Leica lens

  1. Hello from Philip G - a new member of Circle D. I am a Leica user of old (too old some would say) but now a convert to both the delights and occasional frustrations of digital. I look forward to meeting some of you in the future, but meanwhile here are just a few November thoughts:

    1 Alan
A well framed shot with a good range of tones.

    2 Bernd
The long exposure has given a very ‘peaceful’ effect on what must have been a a very still day - with little movement in the tree branches.

    3 Bill
Well spotted and equally well captured: eye contact with the one demonstrator made interest.

    4 David F
An excellent study in concentration by an obvious enthusiast - in contrast to the less interested passers-by in the background. Superb detail.

    5 David K
The lens certainly coped well with the exposure time. I was going to comment on the distracting figures to the right until I realised they were part of the exhibit!

    6 Elaine
A classic landscape that works well in mono. I wonder if an even deeper foreground making more of the rocks would have worked as well.

    7 Jim
Very well spotted: it looks as if you were in the following vehicle.

    8 Keith
A very atmospheric shot which seemed to convey very early morning light - superb colours.

    8 Malcolm
Well seen - just a pair pf feet. An almost historic feel to the picture if not for the modern car.

    10 Mike
A great shot, and a bonus mark for the performer as well. I noticed the .com label behind the table but I don’t see what you could have done about that!

    11 Phil
Strong colours made interest - imagine what a shot it would have been if you had been in the pits with the real car!

    13 Rob
A good choice of viewpoint has made an interesting abstract.

    14 Sky
Great colour impact and good tight cropping.

    15 Tom
Excellent lighting combined with a good sky has given you a very strong shot. I liked the position of the small group in the left foreground.

    16 William
I could certainly sense the tense action in this shot.

    1. Alan

Nicely framed shot of the River. Would like to see a bit more detail in the shadow areas and it is probably a quirk of the composition, but the river does not look “level”.

    2. Bernd

Peaceful Autumn scene. The water must have been very still to get reflections at 250 secs and not sure what the benefit of the long exposure was.

    3. Bill

Fun photo that would fit a “Fill in the bubble” for the guy with the drink.

    4. David F

Beautiful models well worth close scrutiny. A good shot with nice differential focus. Might have cropped off the railway at the bottom as it keeps calling my attention!

    5. David K

A very imaginative Banksy. Very well handled technically, and well demonstrates versatility of D-lux.

    6.Elaine

I am not sure why, but there is a lack of sharpness to building on my monitor.

    7.Jim

It is obviously a business that appeals to some.

    8.Me

    9. Malcolm

High summer on the East coast? Nicely composed shot on what looks like a testing day.

    10.Mike

Thespians love to thesp! Lovely range of tones.

    11. Phil

Could be Fangio. Super depth of field for a macro shot.Quite realistic.

    12. Philip G

Firstly a big welcome. Lovely sharpness and textures. The lighting on the wall must be near perfect to show the relief you have captured so well..

    13. Rob

Good shot of a complex structure with bags of detail. I like that the centre is slightly offset in frame.

    14. Sky

Well seen, framed and exposed shot. Especially like that you have kept the whites white.

    15. Theodore

    16. Tom

What a building this is. Since the terrorist raid the security on entry is impressive in its thoroughness but also politeness. This shot shows it off very well, and I think the small group in the bottom left corner is great.

    17.Tony

    18. William
Colourful action shot with just the right hint of movement. The dancer on the right could do with a new pair of tights!

PS Really enjoyed your article in the latest journal, and have to say congratulations to Phil for one of the best editions to date.

  3. 1) Alan
Lovely shot with perfect clarity and very nice black and white tones.

    2) Bernd
I like the symmetry of this shot and the reflections in the water. However, I’m not sure about the branches which come from the right, and droop down to almost the water’s surface; but realise that there is nothing you could have done about them. I don’t suppose you take a chain saw with you when you go out to shoot images.

    3) Bill
Great shot but it’s a pity you cannot see the nearest person’s face. I think that would have made it even more powerful.

    4) David F
Nice composition showing a good relationship between the man and piece of equipment he is looking at. The image tells a story. Shame he is wearing a green jersey which clashes a little bit with the table covering in the background.

    5) David K
Considering the available light this is great. As you say, the camera has performed admirably under the circumstances. I particularly like the three lights and figures in the background which I think really add to the image.

    6) Elaine
Lovely composition and tones. I think the reflections in the water and detail in the sky also add greatly to this nice image.

    7) Jim
What can I say? Great amusing image which was well seen and captured.
Reminds me of the story about the undertaker who bought a luxury million pound cruiser and claimed it against tax ……. said he bought it to do burials at sea.

    8) Keith
Superb; really gives one an excellent impression of the weather conditions at the time of capture. The mist and reflections make the image and the diagonals certainly add to the composition. All the more interesting to see it was shot at 1600 ISO.

    9) Malcolm
Nice shot of a great location. I like the way the railings and path take the eye into the picture with the windbreaker in the foreground adding interest and also balance. I also think the shadows from the beach huts do well in breaking up what would otherwise have been a plain surface on the path.

    10) Mike
Wonderful, such clarity and tones; as one would expect from such a great combination of camera and lens. Great composition and detail means it’s an image one would continue going back to.

    11) Phil
The red and green certainly work well together to make this tabletop shot work well.

    12) Philip G
Great, I like the position of the hand on the wall in relation to the artist. Being real picky, I would have tried to get rid of the ladder which runs out of frame at the right; it wouldn’t be difficult using one of the software programs.

    13) Rob
The geometry of the structure makes this image, but I think it’s important that you didn’t have the centre of the framework in the centre of the image. Being slightly offset to the left, as you have done, makes the composition just right.

    14) Sky
Nice architectural shot. However, it’s a pity that the very top of the arch has been cut off.

    15) Theodore

    16) Tom

    17) Tony

    18) William
Certainly portrays the sense of the moment, although it’s a shame about the positioning of the ladies right leg as it looks as though she’s kicking her partner ….. maybe she is.

  4. 1. Alan. Foreground foliage, although slightly out of focus and lacking in detail, does form a frame for the lake itself where the contrast between the rippled surfaces of the water and the clear reflections is the main point of interest.

    2. Bernd. In many ways this is similar to the previous image, the difference being that the long exposure has enabled a smaller aperture and hence a greater depth of field rendering foreground so much sharper. The overhanging tree branch prevents the eye from straying into the empty lake surface beyond.

    3. Bill. Well the message is loud but not very clear to me - and therefore wasted on me. However I do like the anonymous pair of grey trousers and the chap with the coffee cup who looks an unlikely demonstrator, his eye contact gives the image strength.

    4. David F. A well captured moment of absorbed interest.. The three models in the foreground and your principal character are well defined against the slightly off focus background which may well have been distracting had it been either more or less sharp.

    5. David K. I shall remain silent on the artistic qualities of this piece of Banksie’s work but the image of it has much to recommend it, well framed and extremely well exposed in unpromising lighting.

    6. Elaine. Good foreground detail and the castle is nicely positioned but despite the evident sunshine the image does seem rather flat, perhaps the contrast could be increased somewhat?

    7. Jim. I’m all for a spot of black humour but this really takes the cake. Not sure whether to laugh or cry at the lack of taste.

    8. Keith. Impressive landscape, the cloud holds the top of the frame in and the low mist on the water gives the impression of a long time exposure.

    9. Me.

    10. Mike. Great fun and a great expression. I like the idea of Alice spending a penny outside Piccadilly Circus Underground station, was she arrested? A spot more depth of field required to bring the dormouse into focus.

    11. Phil. It’s bright, bits of it are sharp and we can see what it is, beyond that……..

    12. Phillip G. Welcome to the Circle Philip. You have given us a bold, very low angle shot to start off with. The mass of spray paint cans in the foreground coupled with the artist putting in the fine detail really tells the story behind effort that goes into the graffiti images that we see everywhere these days. The image on the wall is intriguing and I am rather frustrated that I cannot see the whole of it.

    13. Rob. Architectural, abstract, asymetric and almost monochrome, a fine image of an unlikely subject. It pays to look up.

14.Sky. The artificial lighting is the making of this, it is a much stronger image than it would have been if shot in daylight.

    16. Tom. We might consider this to be a fairly ordinary but well crafted record shot of an admittedly impressive building but it becomes all the more poignant in view of the recent terrorist attack, was it shot before or after?

    17. Tony. No image.

    18. William. Nicely timed moment with the two girls both facing into the frame and looking towards the boy. Movement in hands and foot give it life. All those drums and not percussionist in sight.

  5. 1) Alan
I like the framing of this and the black and white works well. The ripples add to the textures of the picture and provide a nice contrast in front of the still water beyond.

    2) Bernd
Another reflection as above, and this time in colour. The formal composition works well here and your note about the missing trees adds to the feel.

    3) Bill
Even protesters need a coffee… nicely caught, and I like the chap hidden by the banner.

    4) David F
Like a scene from the Antiques Road Show. The models look fascinating and the picture captures this chap’s interest well.

    5) David K
I like this, the lights in the background add to the feel and the D-Lux has indeed coped very well.

    6) Elaine
Another lovely landscape, well composed and the grey tones give a timeless feel.

    7) Jim
    A classic! Well seen.

    8) Keith
The low cloud adds a sense of mystery, some sort of Scandinavian drama perhaps!

    9) Malcolm
This looks like the wind break is trying to suffocate those inside. The shadow of the beach huts is lovely as well, excellent shot.

    10) Mike
Mad indeed…. Great use of black and white and very well processed. I really want a Monochrom!

    11) Me

    12) Philip G
The artists work looks interesting, and this captures that well, though perhaps a slightly wider shot might have included more of his tools.

    13) Rob
Well spotted, always worth looking up and this roof is impressive.

    14) Sky
Another good roof! Hope you had a good night downtown.

    15) Theodore - no image

    16) Tom
Lots of detail in the nicely lit shot. This shows off the building very well indeed.

    17) Tony - No image

    18) William
The energy of the performers comes across in this shot. excellent.

  6. 1) Alan
Nicely composed landscape photograph, well suited to monochrome and with a good tonal range

    2) Bernd
Well framed picture of a tranquil canal scene, nicely exposed and enhanced by the reflections

    3) Bill
Well captured fun picture of the ‘extras’ at the Conservative Party Conference

    4) David F
Interesting picture taken of the enthusiast at the Dorset Steam Fair, well exposed, good depth of field and fine detail, although the item in the immediate foreground is a slight distraction

    5) Mine

    6) Elaine
Well framed landscape photograph, well suited to monochrome, although it might have been enhanced by a more dramatic sky

    7) Jim
Well spotted fun shot of the ‘unusual’ hearse provider, well exposed and with good detail (However, as for the name and marketing, words fail….?!)

    8) Keith
Interesting landscape picture - made all the more atmospheric by the Norwegian mist. Well exposed and enhanced by the reflections

    9) Malcolm
Good shot of the beach huts at Whitby, nicely framed and enhanced by the shadows from the huts (The scene is reminiscent of the new arrival of beach huts on the promenade at Weston, a short distance from me, whose main attraction is actually the individual pastel shades of each hut.)

    10) Mike
Well captured image of the street performer at Piccadilly Circus, nicely framed and with a good tonal range and lots of fine detail

    11) Phil
Well exposed shot of the Scalextric Maserati with good depth of field and enhanced by the car’s strong red colour

    12) Philip G
Nicely framed photograph of the street artist and his creation, with fine detail, particularly with his tools in the foreground and enhanced by the low angle chosen (Warm welcome to Philip in joining the Circle!)

    13) Rob
Interesting architectural scene, well framed and exposed and with fine detail

    14) Sky
Well framed and exposed shot with strong colours, being probably all the stronger being taken in the evening conditions

    15) Theodore
    No photograph

    16) Tom
Well exposed photograph of the well known landmark hotel in Mumbai (presumably taken after the 2008 terrorist attack). The image is enhanced by the dark sky and the group in the foreground

    17) Tony
    No photograph

    18) William
Interesting colourful shot of the country dancers in Cuba, which does well in portraying the movement

  7. 1. Alan: Moon River, Pensthorpe, Norfolk.
Nice black and white landscape. I like the framing by the plants in the foreground. This works very well.

    2. Bernd: Autumn.
Nice Colour Landscape. I like the processing and colours come up very well. It seems that a tripod was used to get a slow shutter speed as there is water movement, nicely captured in the foreground.

    3. Bill: Conference Sideshow.
I am sure that these guys thought that they were the ‘main attraction’. The fact that one of them is looking at the photographer, while the other is ‘headless’ helps to make the photo. Very well seen and captured.

    4. DavidF: Great Dorset Steam Fair.
This man has a lean which I could not possibly emulate without falling over. Both he and the models on the bench in front of him are very well captured.

    5. David F: Cinderella’s Coach Crash- Dismaland.
The lighting is very well captured. Are the photographer ‘chaps’, on the right, models or ‘performance artists’? I don’t believe that visitors are required to wear helmets and face masks.

    6. Elaine: Stalker Castle.
Another nice black and white landscape with the castle on the third. A nice harmonious shot.

    7. Jim: Fools and Hearses.
I have tracked down their current website. One would need to be a fan to go on a ‘last journey’ in this. Well seen and humorous.

    8. Keith: Sognefjord.
I was on the fjords about two years ago and the hanging clouds caused by the climate and topography left a lasting impression. Very nice landscape which also captures the remote locations in which Norwegians live around the fjords.

    9. Malcolm: North Beach Whitby.
This must have been taken some years ago as you dont see these beach shelters so much nowadays. Imagine, we used to bring mallets onto beaches in order to hammer them! Nicely observed image of what might be regarded nowadays as eccentric behaviour.

    10. Mike: The Mad Hatter.
Lovely photo with excellent tones. As regards the performer and his missing partner, there must be a tin cup somewhere as this would be an expensive display to do just for fun.

    11. Phil: Maserati 250F.
This must be ‘El Maestro’ Juan Manuel Fangio waiting to beat all the others, again! The shot from behind enhances the atmosphere. This looks like a very nice layout.

    12. Philip G: Finishing Touches.
Welcome to the Circle Philip. There is lovely detail here and the black and white treatement works well as colour would have distracted with all of the detail in the photo.

    13. Rob: Above the Stage, Rose Theatre.
There is very nice detail here. The photo is almost black and white. I would love to see what this might look like with full B+W treatment.

    14. Sky: Out late downtown.
The photo subject appears to ‘lean back’ but it works for me. The colours are also very effective.

    15. Theodore: Away

    16. Tom: Taj Hotel, Mumbai, India.

I really like the lighting in this. The black and white treatment highlights the building and the various shapes in its structure. A lovely shot.

    17. Tony : No image

    18. William: Mine. Two clarifications. Tom, the young lady was crossing her legs as part of the dance routine. Malcolm, the drum kit was used by another group.

    1. Just for the record, North Beach Whitby was shot last September, I guess you have to be a little eccentric to keep a beach hut!

  8. William, the Banksy artwork 'Cinderella's Coach Crash' at Dismaland was a thought-provoking exhibit on Princess Diana's tragic crash in Paris in August 1997. Your photographer 'chaps' are part of the exhibit, being the paparazzi, perhaps gloating over the accident they were alleged to have caused...?! Indeed, models of their motorcycles are also there behind the scene. Kind regards David

    ReplyDelete
  9. Malcolm. I was referring to the thing with poles and not the huts. Normally, you would have seen these being used on beaches. They were very common at one time but not so much now, certainly on this side of the pond.

David K. Sorry for getting your initial wrong. The use of the 'photographers' certainly turns this into a piece of strong social commentary.

  10. Alan (Moon River): Good composition with the framing foliage in the foreground, nice B&W tones and an overall pleasing image.

Bernd (Autumn)Lovely symmetric shot, excellent colour from the M9 and superb autumn foliage reflected in the water.

Bill (Conference sideshow): Woe unto them wot hide behind posters but its encouraging that Mammon is represented by a sustaining takeaway coffee. A well-seen quirky shot.

David F (Dorset Steam fair): I like this a lot. Excellent colours and a wonderful pose with the visitor hovering like a crane (bird variety) over the exhibits.

David K (Cinderella’s coach crash): If it hadn’t been for the excellent explanation I might have missed the point, but the allegory is appropriate. A nicely composed and executed shot with an intriguing story.

Elaine (Stalker Castle): Lovely black and white conversion, superb tones and composition, plus an intriguing sky.

Jim (Fools and horses): One for the web site: A nice quirky van decoration that brings a smile.

Keith (Sognefjord): Atmospheric and nicely composed landscape enhanced by the low-lying cloud, great colours.

Malcolm (North Beach Whitby): Great composition and use of the serried ranks of beach huts disappearing into the distance. Only the car jars but we can’t have everything. I like this a lot.

    Mine.

Phil (Maserati): I’m a simple soul and Phil catches me out every time with his model cars—but I’m a sucker for them nonetheless. Nice colours and framing.

Philip G (Finishing touches): A rare and entertaining insight into the street graffiti artist who, it seems, keeps his spare spray cans in his trousers. Well seen and a great B&W conversion.

Rob C (Above the stage): It’s a bit difficult to work out what this is without the caption but it works. I would have cropped to centralise the image and make it more symmetrical but this might not have been possible. Nice result from the X2.

Sky (Out late downtown): Entertaining night shot, presumably at fairly high ISO; would have been good to have the figures.

    Theodore (no entry)

Tom (Taj Hotel): Nice to meet you at the Leica Mayfair event, Tom. This is a really excellent B&W from the Tri-Elmar, which I also own and love, and the conversion and processing is outstanding.

    Tony (no entry)

William (Dancing in Cuba): Ah! I recognise this from the article you wrote for MacFilos. The fact that I chose it as the cover picture shows that I must have liked it. Great atmosphere and sense of movement. A really well-executed shot from the Irish maestro.
