New England Train: taken with M9 and 24mm Elmar. This is from the Historical and Railway Museum at Gorham, New Hampshire, USA. For the train buffs this is a 1911 Baldwin 0-6-0 Steam Engine. Silver Efex has been used to give some power and strength to a static display.

Good use of a super lens. You have done very well to have such natural colours with such a long exposure

    2) Bill S
You captured the perfect facial expression to go with the title.

    3) David F
The relief and textures are well reproduced

    4) David K
You have isolated subject well in a busy street, but image might be a bit stronger if cropped significanntly left and top sides for me.

    5) Dunk
Probably as good as it gets at a busy (over restored) car show, but think I would loose shoes top right.

    6)Elaine
Should be a great image, but I find the colours disturbing

    Me

    8) Malcolm
A pleasant capture of a country scene. Think I would like to see string on a third if you know what I mean.

    9) Mike E
Super contrast and detail. The sky is almost to good and pulls attention away from subject, so wonder if portrait format might be more powerful.

    10) Phil C
The guy in the blue T seems engaged and a shame the yellow shawl had to be there at that moment. The joy of city working for such opportunities.

    11) Robert H
Certainly captured at the precise moment, with the full landing ramp in shot. Well done.

    12) Theodore
Lovely image. Presented as a portrait I think I would crop of the box on left side and also try and crop the grey on the right. You can afford to loose some table at the bottom to keep ratio the same.

Good post processing has created a powerful image. Very nicely composed.

  2. Leica Circle D September Comments

1 Bernd: On the hike – the mountain stream

I like the composition; good use of diagonal and rocks; trees and mountains look superb. However, the long exposure’s resultant rendition of the stream looks way OTT. There are so many similar pictures doing the rounds including those achieved with ND filters that they cease to have that special ‘scarcity’ factor.

    2 Bill: Don’t panic

Well seen and good attempt but the implied connection between the lady with her mobile phone and the background advert message is too weak.

3 David F: The Moscow Space Monument

Well exposed and the lighting has enhanced the relief of the sculpture but much of it is missing / cropped out – would prefer to see the message from the whole width.

4 David K: The Dog Caring Big Issue Seller

Not a lot going on and the poor dog looks very fed up – as do most Big Issue seller’s animals – so the ‘caring’ implication might not be quite correct. I’d like to see more emphasis on the poor animal maybe from a lower and closer perspective. As it is a fair record shot – might benefit from cropping.

    5 Mine

6 Elaine: The Red Canoe, Wastwater

Interesting reflections but the rather too bright foreground spoils the composition – cropping it out and creating a ‘letterbox’ format could make a super image.

7 Keith: Corfe Castle at sunrise

Peaceful pastoral scene in difficult lighting – the shadows on LHS detract a little. Might benefit from a crop to the foreground so that the path/steps to the castle start from the corner thus creating a diagonal element.

    8 Malcolm: Fence and String

I looked at this at length trying to find a message or a pattern or some interest … Agricultural Tracey Emin? A man hanging from a noose? Regret to say that try as I might could not find much to excite me - and the hard lighting / shadows detract. –However, I have not appreciated alleged masterpieces in the Tate Modern so others may have a totally different emotional experience with this composition. The lichens on the stones would be the main interest for me.

    9 Mike : England Expects

When I first saw this my immediate reaction was, “Wow” … but now I know a bit more about the software my opinion has changed. The PP has been very well executed, but … the clouds have ended up far too dominant and detract from the statue and Nelson. If the clouds were toned down so as not to compete the image could/might say much more.

    10 Phil: Philosophy

Another pair of backsides form our leader – but in a street setting this time! A fair record shot of busy people in a hurry ignoring the girlies’ handouts – and reminds me of Stanley Green years ago handing out his messages in Oxford Street. A front view might be interesting. There’s so much potential for street photography in Central London. Did you hang around and try a few more shots from different angles?

11 Robert H: Dare Devil Monmouth Show

Unfortunately appears as a very small image which prevents full appreciation of the exciting stunt. Was this accidentally resized too small? If larger might be a winner.

    12 Theodore: Portrait

Informal (spontaneous?) portrait of the lady and her dog which might please the sitter but I’d prefer to see a bit more of the chair (other arm). As it is the composition looks incomplete and untidy; the box on the LHS could be cropped out to good effect. One for the family album.

    13 William: New England Train

Very striking and powerful steam locomotive photograph, but … I wish the whole rear of the loco was in the frame. Good use of the software to enhance the image but perhaps the shadow detail could have been lifted to reveal more detail?

Some interesting images to peruse over and will again be difficult choosing a winner.

    Best wishes

    1. Thanks Dunk,
I did take a few other shots but all from behind as I wanted the text on their shirts to be visible. As you say, lots to shoot in central London. Phil

  3. 1. Bernd- On the Hike. Lovely Composition.
The flowing misty water effect is perhaps overdone in camera club circles but it works here.

    2. Bill-Dont’ Panic.
Advertising sign and subject are well matched. Well seen.

    3. David F- Moscow Space Monument.
The 35mm Summaron gives away very little to modern lenses and is, perhaps the most under-rated Leica lens ever.

    4. David K- Dog Caring Big Issue Seller.
Nicely seen. Could perhaps benefit from a crop to emphazise the main subjects more.

    5. Dunk- “ They don’t make ‘em like this anymore!”.
The guy examining the car makes the picture. The engine detail is wonderful.

    6. Elaine- The Red Canoe, Wastwater.
Red against green always works. This may need a bit of colour correction and some curves work in Photoshop.

    7. Keith- Corfe Castle at sunrise.
Nice light. The exposure on the castle might benefit from being taken down a little.

    8. Malcolm- Fence and String.
Interesting composition. Might work better with a crop to place the string on the left hand side of the picture.

    9. Mike- England expects.
Nice composition, but I wonder how would it look as a vertical shot. The sky is certainly dramatic but it is perhaps too dramatic distracting from the main subjects.

    10. Phil- Philosophy.
Dispensing Philosophy on Oxford Street. Now there’s an idea! Something to do with House of Fraser? Might work better with a closer crop on the ‘Philosophy Ladies’. Interesting reaction from the young man with the tool box.

    11. Robert H- Dare Devil.
Very nice and caught at the peak. The main subject figure might stand out better in black and white as there is a lot of subject matter below the rider.

    12. Theodore- Portrait.
Lovely Portrait. I would crop tighter to eliminate box on left.

    13. Tony- No Photo.

    14. William- Mine.

  4. 1) Bernd H.
I like this shot, wonderful detail, love the composition and colours.
    2) Bill S.
Do not know what to make of this one, love the facial expression but the composition?
    3) Dave F.
    Mine
    4) David K.
Agree a tight crop would give a better composition.
    5) Duncan.
A record shot, do not like the face colour or indeed the ‘gold’ engine.
    6) Elaine.
Like the composition but the colours are over the top.
    7) Keith.
    Well exposed nice composition.
    8) Malcolm.
Nice detail, would like to see the string on a left hand ‘third’.
    9) Mike.
Very nice strong details but would like to see a left and right crop to remove some of the clouds that detract from the main subject.
    10) Phil.
For me a left and right and crop would be good, yellow shawl and red handbag distract.
    11) Robert H.
    Good shot, well timed.
    12) Theodore.
Good record shot, not for me.
    13) Tony.

    14) William.
Very strong photo, I like the composition, good use of Silver Efex.

  5. 1) Bernd :
Lovely quality throughout this photograph with amazing depth of field from the 24mm lens. I particularly like the colours of this picture plus the misty effect of the water and the way ones eye is led into the picture via the river. Like it.

    2) Bill :
Well spotted and executed . Shame you have some noise in the ladies coat and handbag which is a bit distracting.

    3) David F :
Good sharp result from your Summaron. The mural is evenly lit and all the detail is well defined. This is a good record of this particular subject.

    4) David K :
The idea for this picture is sound enough but could be improved by moving in closer and making the background blurred so your main subject stands out more.

    5) Dunk :
Considering the technique used here you have come away with a cracking result. Plenty of detail in the picture where it is required. The engine stands out well. Nice one.

    6) Elaine. :
The red canoe certainly makes the picture but I am a bit disturbed by the bright yellow green foreground which is very bright and overpowering. I think this could be dealt with in Lightroom or Photoshop. The reflections in the still lake are an added bonus.

    7) Keith. :
This is a different take on Corfe Castle and the early morning sunshine makes the picture. The sheep are an added bonus though maybe I would have liked to see them a little more to the left as they look a bit cramped in the image as it stands. Lovely quality throughout this photograph.

    8) Malcolm. :
Well spotted. The simple subjects always make good photographs. Good and sharp and I like the different textures of the stonewall and gates plus the light was with you . A very pleasing photograph.

    9) Mike. :
An impressive image from the new T series. The clouds certainly have a wow factor which is well over the top but somehow it all seems to work. I think this is an image for next years AGM!

    10) Phil. :
Oxford Street looks as busy as ever. Well spotted but it may have been even better if the two girls had more interaction with the people. As it stands they look a bit static, it may have been worth hanging around a bit to see what developed.

    12) Theodore. :
The 24mm has been put to good use here. The dog looks very contented. This is a very pleasing portrait.

    14) William. :
You have certainly filled the frame with your chosen subject . Lovely detail of the locomotive with the aid of Silver Efex pro which has been put to good use here. A winner I think.

  6. 1) Bernd
Nicely composed landscape photograph with good colours. However, a more natural look to the flowing water might be prerable

    2) Bill
Well caught street shot but the link to the advert is not entirely clear

    3) David F
Well exposed picture of the mural with good lighting

    4) Mine

    5) Dunk
Fine photograph of the Rolls engine with very good detail, strengthened by the presence of the ‘admirer’

    6) Elaine
Nicely composed picture with wonderful reflections and enhanced by the red boat. However, the colours are somewhat overwhelming

    7) Keith
Well exposed landscape photograph with warm colours in the background but the shadows around the Castle do detract from the overall composition

    8) Malcolm
Nicely spotted rural detail with good lighting. Positioning the string to the left might have enhanced the composition

    9) Mike
The picture has good contrast but the ‘strong’ clouds do rather detract from the main subjects

    10) Phil
Good street photograph illustrating busy urban life. However, the yellow shawl of the figure to the left is somewhat of a distraction from the subject matter

    11) Robert H
Well composed shot to capture both the rider and vehicle ramp

    12) Theodore
Nice portrait of the lady and her ‘contented’ dog. The item to the left (a box?) does somewhat detract from the composition

    13) Tony
    No photograph

    14) William
Well composed photograph which nicely illustrates the scale and power of the railway engine and having good detail. The picture might have been enhanced still further by including more of the rear of the engine.

  7. 1) Bernd. A fine rendition of the river valley with the mountains making a strong background. The vapour trails (Ansel Adams called them “wormholes in the sky”) and the two(?) figures remind us that we are not alone there. The very long exposure has given the water a milky and paradoxically static appearance rather than the clear and dynamic look that we expect to see.

    2) Bill. I’m not convinced about his one Bill because I cannot relate the lady with the advertisement behind her. Although there does appear to be tension in her face and in the grip on her bag I don’t feel that the link is anything but coincidental.

    3) David F. This looks typical of Russian artwork and your gritty treatment of the image is well suited to the powerful figures that are portrayed.
    4) David K. You’re in a Catch22 situation here. Because the dog is being well cared for he is in shadow and we cannot see him properly, had he not been in the shade of his umbrella your title would have disappeared. My immediate thought is that at least a third of the picture area is redundant and a longer lens (or closer viewpoint) is in order.

    5) Dunk. An impressive piece of machinery and I’m puzzled by the mirror image of the engine compartment behind the lamps. The upside down reflection of the living gargoyle adds a surreal touch.

    6) Elaine. There is a magical quality to this scene. The scree slope and its reflection point our eye to the left, the same direction that the canoe (which almost looks airborne) is heading. The foreground foliage is in vivid mode and needs taming but I am sure you - and the canoeists - had a day to remember.

    7) Keith. The low sun has caught the tower brilliantly and I wonder whether a short wait might not have lightened up more of the castle? Building it at the base of the hill seems to have been a strategic mistake!

    8) Mine.

    9) Mike. Trafalgar Square - but not as we know it. The sky has been so overworked that the statues almost look as if they had been pasted onto a shot of waves crashing in a very rough sea. It certainly looks dramatic but to me at least it also looks artificial.

    10) Phil. A degree of symmetry here with the two figures disappearing out of frame to left and right and the two philosophers facing into the frame. The last thing the OSRL chap wants right now is a leaflet to think about.

    11) Robert. Let’s hope the word “BROKE” was not prophetic. A fun shot (always provided your not the chap on the bike) captured at exactly the right moment.

    12) Theodore. A picture of contentment, all in browns relieved by small touches of blue/grey. A couple of intrusions left and right could be removed but that is carping. I think we have seen the puppy before?

    13) Tony - No image.

    14) William. The wide angle lens has exaggerated the perspective but has been used to advantage to eliminate, so far as is possible in these places, any distractions.
