This was taken with an M9 plus WATE handheld. I had been doing some work in Bath and we were on our way to Cornwall for a short holiday. We stopped at Exeter and visited the Cathedral. I had heard the Cathedral was a spectacular building inside but the interior was even better than I expected. I have tried to capture this in my photo.

That’s it for this month, please vote and comments as usual.

Well seen and photographed. The observors on the pavement heighten the effect.

    3. David F

    Lovely image with great texture.

    4. David K

Captures Bath at its best. Must seek out this vantage point the next time I am there.

    5. Duncan

Nice group shot. Are there any dancing shots?

    6. Elaine

Nice side lighting. I wonder where this is?

    7. Keith W

Lovely B+W landscape. The cloud shadows really enhance the scene and mood.

    8. Malcolm

Nicely seen and taken. I wonder what time the pub opens?

    9. Mike E

Good use of Noctilux. Nice Contax!

    10. Phil C

Well seen. Leads one to wonder where this is and why the glove got left there. Hardly fruit picking!

    11. Robert H

Great Light and placement of sun rays. Works great in B+W.

    12. Rob S

Must have been a lovely day. Captures the size of the plantation as well as the season with blossoms.

    13. Theodore

I like the angle of this shot as it captures the expression and feeling of the carving.

    15. William F

    Mine.

2 Bill S ‘How does he do that?’

Good composition and exposure and sharpness but so many street entertainers practice this illusion that it’s not ‘box office’ anymore; thus no scarcity value. But it’s a fair documentary grab shot illustrating the expressive faces of passers-by.

    3 David F ‘Amarylis’

Flower is beautifully exposed; good sharpness; good depth of field; good textures in the flower treatment … but it’s so tight in the frame and the actual frame is rather overwhelming and competes too much with the flower. With a narrower frame and more space between it and the flower could be a super greetings card picture.

4 David K ‘Morning Sun on Putney Bridge’

Leica D2 cameras can produce super quality images - hence hold their value. This image shows what they are capable of ref colour and sharpness. However, composition could be improved if the boat had not been so cropped … and maybe the shadows could have been lifted a little?

    5 Mine

    6 Elaine ‘The Manger’

Excellent composition; good patterns; pleasing diagonal; good foreground interest … and for me, good memories from many years ago. Another of your superb landscapes.

7 Keith W ’Win Green Dorset

Super landscape; good compositional ‘rule of thirds’ elements; good depth of field; nicely exposed; pleasing cloud detail; interesting bowl shape outline in foreground. I like this image.

    8 Malcolm R ‘Orange Street WC2’

Looked long and hard at this image searching for a story but drew a blank. Foreground figure not sharp enough and staring at the camera with odd facial expression. She’s not well defined or interesting. Pub in background is rather ugly looking too. Maybe has lost something in the scanning?

    9 Mike E ‘Contax T3’

Interesting project but in this composition the Contax user looks too ‘two dimensional’ Would prefer to see him from an angle to give more depth. The vignette does not add anything to improve the image.

10 Phil C ‘Found Item One Pink Glove’

Unfortunately the rather too central glove does not create sufficient pictorial interest and the foliage is rather uninteresting too. A closer view of the glove placed to one side of the frame might work better?

11 Robert H ‘Towards the Light’

Difficult contre-jour exposure. Unfortunately the slight converging verticals distortion (especially top LHS) is distracting and spoils the composition. The bright sun is too central and overwhelming; the foreground shadows are also distracting. Maybe with the sun ‘off centre’ would have worked better?

12 Rob S ‘Kent in Bloom’

I like the dynamics of the ‘marching trees’ and their mature but pruned appearance. And the sky detail is just sufficient so as not to compete with the trees. But the distracting foreground saplings (?) spoil an otherwise superb orchard picture.

    13 Theodore ‘Tree Nymph’

I’ve looked at this image so many times but cannot see or find anything really pictorially pleasing. Photo is a rather unattractive record of a poorly carved/executed ‘thing’ …‘nymph’ it is not … and photographically the head is not sharp. Could not live with this on my wall.

14 Tony ...No entry this month

    15 William F ‘Exeter Cathedral’

The quality of the image is very striking and pleasing for the detail, exposure, sharpness and colours ... but as regards framing and composition, the slightly incomplete lecturn base bottom RHS is distracting and spoils an otherwise superb image.

    Best wishes to all

  3. 2) Bill S :
This picture reminds me of the " So Money Supermarket .com” ad. Lovely expressions on the pedestrians faces. This works well in B&W but it is a pity the one pedestrian has walked behind your subject as you fired the shutter. As you say how does he do that?

    3) David F :
The square format chosen here suits this particular subject and you have certainly filled the frame. I like the warm tone of the picture and plenty of detail is in evidence. The 50 mm has done you proud.

    4) David K :
The early morning sunlight really brings out the honey colour of the buildings brickwork. Plenty of detail and a pleasing record of this part of Bath. I particularly like the way you have used the river to lead ones eye to Poultney Bridge.

    5) Duncan :
By Jove these ladies look formidable. A good group record with a tight crop and striking colours.

    6) Elaine :
The lighting has worked for you here picking out the detail in The Manger. The dark sky helps to hold the image together shame about those nasty wind turbines in the background.

    7) Keith W:
The clouds make this picture they have been well recorded. The use of the wide angle lens draws ones eye into the image. Lovely range of tones along with dramatic lighting. A winner I think.

    8) Malcolm :
An interesting image this. The pub does look rather neglected and run down and the lady is I think wondering what you are photographing. A different perspective from you this time round.

    9) Mike E :
A good sharp image and you have certainly filled the frame. I like the use of vignette it concentrates ones eye on the subject. Nice one.

    10) Phil C :
Unusual. The pink glove certainly stands out from all the green foliage. I wonder if you had moved in a bit closer whether the picture would have had more impact.

    12) Rob S :
Lovely vibrant colours to this image. The sky is great and compliments the blossoming trees and overall the picture conveys a warm sunny day. A minor crit is the annoying weeds in the foreground to the right of the frame. Could they have been removed?

    13) Theodore :
An apt title of an interesting wood carving which has started weather.

    15) William F :
What fantastic detail you have captured here. A remarkable result. I particularly like the colour range here.

    2) Bill S
Good street photograph of the street entertainer, strengthened by the expressions of the passers-by. They are a regular feature in Bath but never cease to amaze!

    3) David F
Fine image of the flower and well composed and framed

    4) Mine

    5) Duncan
Colourful picture of the group of ladies. It is a pity that they could not all be persuaded to face the photographer

    6) Elaine
Nice landscape photograph, strengthened by the lighting in the foreground

    7) Keith W
Fine landscape picture, enhanced by the strong clouds and with a good tonal range

    8) Malcolm
Interesting urban scene, but maybe it would have been better without the foreground figure

    9) Mike E
Interesting and well exposed shot of the photographer

    10) Phil
Well spotted image of the glove, begging the question as to how and why it got placed there

    11) Robert H
Lovely monochrome photograph, with good lighting and much enhanced by the feature of the sun’s rays

    12) Rob S
Nice picture of the orchard / fruit trees, strengthened by the clouds and deep blue sky

    13) Theodore
Interesting picture of an unusual weather worn carving

    14) Tony

    15) William F
Fine photograph of the interior of the Cathdral and its main altar. The detail is excellent, as is the lighting and exposure

    2) Bill S: How does he do that indeed? Nicely caught moment that makes for a fun street photograph. The fact that most of the passers-by are looking his way just emphasises the strange pose.

    3) David F: A beautiful bloom represented very nicely in black ad white, the creamy tones suit the subject well.

    4) David K: A lovely sunny day, and what better to spend it taking pictures with a Leica in Bath.

    5) Duncan: Some look happier than others, but it’s a fun group shot.

    6) Elaine: As always a well seen landscape, timed to perfection as the shadows draw along the side of the hill.

    7) Keith: There is a feeling of power in this picture as the clouds seem to gather over the field of crops. Nicely framed.

    8) Malcolm: Looks like you have sent the day exploring the streets of London and the sign on this pub says it all. Never mind, there’s always a pub around the next corner in London.

    9) Mike: Nice idea for a project and it’s rare to see a Contax on the street these days.

    10) Me

    11) Robert: Dramatic stuff. The framing is just right for me and the sun adds a touch of drama, the little D-Lux has obeyed your commands well.

    12) Rob: I like the framing, the branches reaching out in hope towards the blue sky. Raining like crazy as I write this so enjoying the shot even more.

    13) Theodore: An interesting carving, the wild hair made by the branches adds a wild touch to the sculpture.

    14) No photo

    15) William: The photo does the Cathedral justice, will stop off and take a look if I am passing that way. Very nicely done.

  6. RE The Pink Glove. Then yes, I did shoot a tighter shot, but in the end just liked the mystery the wider option gave. It's not a great photo - just a record shot snapped on my cycle to the station - but I like spotting these found objects out of place and shooting wide to show context. Cheers, Phil

Like the way passers by eyes direct you to artist.

    3)David F
Lovely delicate tones and nicely presented.

    4) David K
Lovely light lifts a well photographed scene.

    5) Duncan
A good shot for their album.

    6)Elaine
Good exposure catching detail in highlights and shadows

    7)Me

    8) Malcolm
not sure if main subject is person or urban decay!

    9)Mike E
Interesting project and a good supporting image.
    10)Phil C
Interesting shades of green certainly highlight glove.

    11)Robert H
Super image with just the right amount of flare for me.

    12)Rob S
Lovely light and saturated sky. I think I would have done a bit of gardening to remove foreground stems.

    13)Theodore D
I think you have probably got its best side!

A bevy indeed, pity it is not a movie!!
    6) Elaine J.
A really superb photo, I especially like the composition and lighting.
    7) Keith W.
Superb shot very dramatic and lovely clouds and lighting.
    8) Malcolm R.
Wow, a lovely photograph, lots of detail, shows wat an ‘old’ lens can do.
    9) Mike E.
Super detail and very good shot.
    10) Phil C.
Superb photo and composition, a little bit of a ‘cluttered’ background.
    11) Robert H.
Great shot and very nicely composed, like the angle of the shot.
    12) Rob S
The sky makes this shot for me, excellent.
    13) Theodore D.
    Well seen shot, well composed.

    2. Bill S: Interesting. I’ve seen many similar street artists but none as inventive as this. Well seen and composed shot.
    3. David F: This works really well and is enhanced by the dark backcloth. Lovely tone.
    4. David K: Remarkable colour and dynamic range for the old Digilux after ten or more years. It just shows that the object is the photograph, not the bells and whistles of the camera. I like this very much.
    5. Duncan K: This takes the cake for the best caption. Bevy of very colourful belly dancers indeed.
    6. Elaine J: Another beautifully composed and executed landscape from Elaine. My only complaint is the very narrow band of sky. Would the shot have been improved with a broader band?
    7. Keith W: This is a very atmospheric and unusual shot. I love the composition and the excellent B&W conversion.
    8. Malcolm R: Classic East-End corner-shop street shot from the 1930s. I can’t help feeling it would have had more impact and nostalgia without the decidedly un-1930s figure in the foreground.
    9. Michael E: Mine
    10. Phil C: Whimsical but fun except it needed the caption to tell us that it is a pink glove. Maybe a bit of cropping or zooming would have helped.
    11. Robert H: Beautiful piece of contre-jour imagery from the D-Lux 6. Truly excellent.
    12. Rob S: Rob continues to woo us with his X1. This is a great shot and perfectly composed. The contrast between the feature-filled blue sky and the serried ranks of trees is exemplary.
    13. Theodore D: Haven’t we seen the tree nymph somewhere else recently? Good shot, though and well presented.
    14. Tony M: No photo
    15. William R: Excellent interior shot with vivid colour and great detailing from the WATE.

  10. 1. Bernd. No image.

    2. Bill S. How indeed does he do it? He is certainly gaining the attention of the passers-by (except for the chap in the check shirt, who’s seen it all before). A good street scene, the only downside - and there’s always one - being the edge of the coat on the RHS.

    3. David F. I like the warm tones of this, it is suited to the subject and gives it an “antique” feel. Good detail in the petals and depth of field just right.

    4. David K. A long while since I last went to Bath and this shot is an invitation to visit again. A good viewpoint and a sunny day enhances the colour of the stonework and shows the city at its best.

5.Duncan. Dunc’s harem - and I can’t help thinking of Les Dawson’s Roly Polys. Clearly a group out for some fun and in the process of lining up for a group photograph but they need some herding to get them properly into line and they appear to be looking at a different photographer.

6.Elaine. Great light on the Manger that really shows up those extraordinary contours. Is there anywhere left in the country where a wind farm is not within view?

7.Keith W. Another landscape shot from a high vantage point and one that works well in monochrome with the cloud pattern creating shadows on the fields. The tracks of the farm vehicles around and across the fields give it added interest.

    8. Mine.

    9. Mike E. I think you have been spotted. I would like to think that on a website somewhere there is a similar picture of a guy taking a picture with a Leica M. That’s not an old camera (well not by my standards).

    10. Phil. An odd place to find a Marigold - and therein lies the interest - why, how etc.

    11. Robert. This is a very dramatic shot, the starburst is well positioned and lights up the pine forest (so often gloomy places) beautifully. A white border is a must to prevent the image bleeding into the background however my feeling is that it is rather too wide and competes with the picture and a narrower border would be more effective.

    12. Rob S. The old orchard in full bloom on a spring morning with wisps of cloud in a blue sky, lovely. If you could have got a little closer to avoid the foreground twiggery, even better.

    13. Theodore. Well this goes a step or two beyond finding faces in the trees. Someone had fun (and foresight) in carving this lady.

    14. Tony, No image.

    15. William. Some distortion from the wide angle lens but nevertheless a spectacular rendering of the cathedral, the brightness and vibrancy of the colours are terrific.

    2) Bill S - How does he do that?

How unusual. The interested people, the disinterested person, the artist, the surrealism, the ordinariness, the chains all make this photo a treat to look at. I guess his face has been lightened which sadly shows but nevertheless a wonderful shot.

    3) David F

Nature is wonderful and this captures it well. I've noticed a number of flower shots pop up recently on flickr and that. I'm not so sure about the frame but it's really nice to concentrate on something of such beauty for a while.

    4) David K - Morning Sun on Pulteney Bridge

I assumed this was somewhere 'exotic', like Italy, so was pleasantly surprised it was Bath. The morning sun gives this photo a lovely glow and the inclusion of the boats really helps. Lovely.

    5) Duncan - Bevy of Belly Dancers

Great to see so many people taking part and having fun (I assume). I'm guessing you're muscling in on someone else’s photo as they're not looking at you. Having their attention would make the photo a lot better I think as it feels a bit like 'being on the edge'. Many of my photos are like this though!

    6) Elaine - The Manger

Another wonderful landscape Elaine. Improved immensely by including the turbines :-) You have a great eye for interesting formations.

    7) Keith W - Win Green, Dorst

The shapes and texture are wonderful although the black is perhaps too heavy for my liking (particularly the sky). Having said that I could look at this photo for a long time. Lovely.

    8) Malcolm - Orange Street, WC2

There is so much to this photo that I like. Shame her face isn't that clear but I love the 'story' it tells. We need more street photography like this. Wonderful.

    9) Mike E - Contax T3

What an interesting project. The depth of field, eye contact, composition is all excellent. Brilliant. I keen to see the complete project.

    10) Phil Coomes - Found item One, Pink glove

What colours! I think I lost this glove years ago but I'm sure it was red :-) Love the idea but it feels a 'little distant' for me.

    11) Robert H - Towards the Light

What a lovely shot Robert. Into the sun at this time of the year works really well. Your choice of black and white works really well. I love the shadows in the foreground and tree shapes. Lovely.

    12) Rob S - Kent in Bloom

    Me

    13) Theodore - Tree nymph

How unusual which makes me what to know more. The photograph in itself doesn't feel special - a bit 'flat' - but the subject matter is interesting.

    14) Tony - No photo this month

    15) William F - the Cathedral

Wow - full screen this is stunning. You've captured the Cathedral really well; which is surprisingly hard to do. Wonderful.

Nice one Bill -I've seen this man in a number of poses, but not this one well done!

    3, David F
Lovely photograph David, very well lit and processed.

    4, David K
Very placid and very well exposed scene.

    5, Duncan K
Well that's different! Well exposed, the ladies look as though they were enjoying their day.

    6, Elaine J
Another lovely landscape shot sharp and very well exposed

    7, Keith W
That's my kind of sky! Lovely composition and exposure, great B&W processing

    8, Malcolm
Bet you didn't get a pint though, as the pub looks shut! Nice scan and processing.

    9, Michael E
Great portrait! - again, super sharp and well procesed

    10, Phil C
Well spotted, almost surreal, I do like the composition.

    11, Robert H
This is so nice, great composition and use of the sunlight, a really great photograph.

    12, Rob S
With a promise of some lovely fruit to come later I hope, great colour and sharpness.

    13, Theodore D

Simply stunning, super exposure and processing, If it's an HDR it has been so well done, if not then you worked very well to get the lighting and dynamic range just right, very very well done.
